It’s been a long 10 days and very long weekend waiting for today’s game - glad Monday is here at long last.
Up to now it’s been a very good season – we continue to make very good progress on the field, even if we still have the directors squabbling about ownership in the background.
The WBA game was a bit of a turning point for me – in a way we came of age that night – we played some good stuff and defended in a very professional way, especially in the 2nd half – but the good thing is we didn’t look troubled or allowed West Brom to take the game over. It was a brilliant professional performance from everyone involved – WE NEED ANOTHER TONIGHT.
Tonight is different – our local rivals have picked up recently and it’s still going to be another tough game, but once again we need to be professional. Personally I think we’ve stepped up since January in all sorts of ways - the management are learning all the time, the players, the squad, the fans – it really is good to see.
But, ultimately, We need to step away from the past “bridesmaid” type performances/situations that we've all had to endure - some more than others. Between now and the end of the season we have twelve games left and we need to show what the new Sheffield United, under the management of Chris Wilder is really like. This is another game in that process and it is down to CW “driving” the club forward as he likes to keep telling us. Victory tonight is another tick in the box.
Make no mistake – this is a game we should win on form alone – derby or no derby. We all have to be honest and if we turn up, we will win the game. Of course Wednesday could turn up also and they might win the game – but if we turn up, then its three points and we move on to the next game.
Brian Robson once said that “our” Sheffield derby was just another game – well it isn’t for the fans, but it should be for the players. Just turn up – silence the home crowd which is what the old Liverpool teams used to do - play OUR game - get a couple of goals in front and shut the game out – be professional. For sure we dream of a 0-4 stuffing, yes it would be pleasant, but it’s not needed – three points is all that’s needed. No drama, no incidents and hopefully normal celebrations from the players after the game. We’ve achieved nothing yet – just increasingly good comments from football pundits about how we play, which wins you nothing.
The football neutrals still see Norwich and Leeds finishing top 2 – Leeds have one excellent game whilst their last ten game form has been nothing short of mediocre. We are the form team - go and show it.
This season is the time to bury a lot of the past and it’s pleasing that Dowell said the players want to win the league after the WBA game – it proves what the whole club is focused on.
It sounds like we’re on it for tonight – but it’s still only 3 points – we fans can be as euphoric as ever, but tonight doesn’t give us promotion. Chris Wilder says we are focused – Brian Robson did have a point, he just put it over in the wrong way. Just get the three points and move on.
