Why does it matter so f***ing much?

Personally I'm more focused and apprehensive about Leeds and the run in.

This game feels more like a means to an end rather than say the derbies last season.

I sense a real opportunity for us.

For the first time in my life, promotion would mean going into the top flight playing football in the proper way more attuned to not only surviving, but consolidating in the Prem.

Add in a more progressive managerial team than we've had imho, and the need of the Prem and it's money to resolve the ownership issue and progress the club, I think the possibility is huge for us.

Fuck the pigs. This time they're simply another hurdle to overcome in the quest for the bigger prize.

If defeat to them promised promotion, I'd take it now.

Very well put, and I think that probably explains why I'm pretty relaxed about this one. Going into the November derby I was fretting about the game for actual weeks beforehand - probably 3-4 games before it happened.

I always feel with the Sheffield derby that you're expected to win if you're the home team, and it's a victory of sorts if the away team gets away unbeaten (putting those "winning 0-0" jokes aside for a moment). Conversely an away win is the ultimate victory, and a home defeat the ultimate shame. To have that lot turn up and win at our ground...

Might be just my own view, but I'll never forget the away wins at Hillsborough, even if I wasn't there. Whereas a few of the home derbies that we've won (1-0 in 2005, 3-2 in 2009) were very satisfying but I can't remember much about them beyond the goals, and they probably wouldn't even crack my top 20 favourite United moments. Away wins are also VERY rare - only five total away wins since 1970 (that's as far back as I can be bothered to scroll on the head-to-head :) )

I know we're favourites for this one and have every right to be confident of a win - but I'll be nowhere near as gutted if we lose as I would've been had we lost in November. As to being damaging to our season - no more than dropping points to Aston Villa was, and look how that's turned out.

If you don't know why it matters, your better off supporting Manc Poo.

Steel City Derby

Something that's only arrived along with Sky for some reason
We don't produce any steel anymore
We weren't the only place to produce steel when we did

Would the Manchester Derby be re-named the Textile and Cotton Mill Derby ?

We could have a laugh with some of these
Villa v Birmingham, the "Industrial Revolution Derby" or the "Bournville Chocolate Collection Derby" or the "We made shit cars Derby" ?
Arsenal v Spurs, The "Shandy drinking swanky tosspots Derby" ?

Wrong. Whilst the match is the Sheffield derby, This is still the Steel City like Pittsburgh Is in the U.S. Dont play down our history!!

I was in the supermarket in Eccles late last summer modelling the 94-95 home shirt when I got the “nice shirt” comment! Spun round thinking it would be a Salford scrote taking the mick but it turned out he was a junior doctor from Sheffield who was a blade working at the Salford Royal Hospital! We are everywhere!!!
You should go to Turkey ,all the fenerbache fan's are always trying to nick my shirts

Just another opportunity to get three points for me. The lot that play at Hillsborough mean no more to me than Sheffield FC or Hallam. Anything else is just overstating their importance.

Agree.

Each to their own but some derby wins feel more enjoyable to others based on circumstances at the time, or if there's been a few years without.

If we were mid table going nowhere, then this game would be the focus for the season now for me.

As it is, as much as you want to win, it's more like the 2006 game where the 3 points are more important than bragging rights this time imho.

Whatever happens on Monday night, barring a silly scoreline one way or the other, it will get diluted should we have something special happen come May.

I've got 2 people in my family who think beating the Pigs is more important than getting promoted. That's a view I simply can't comprehend. I've followed this club for nearly 40 years and watched us 5 measly top flight seasons.

The impact on our club reaching the Prem this time would be far greater than 'another' derby win, as enjoyable and satisfying as it would be.

Born and live Sharrow.
Even more surprised at your comments then. Outside of the sectarian elements of the Old Firm, Blades v. Pigs is the fiercest rivalry in the country. Liverpool v. Everton is relatively friendly; Manchester is diluted a bit by the Man U/Liverpool contests; Newcastle v. Sunderland is quite tasty; Arsenal v. Spurs is certainly competitive but takes place every season. None of the others are worth a row of beans. Blades v. Pigs - same city, similar size clubs, not every season, close in historical results, and always, always as passionate as they come.

FFS there's over 72 hours to KO and I can't get my mind off the sodding derby! Why does it matter so much? I live in Manc and whilst their derby is fierce there is nothing like the build up and nerves in the air that surrounds a Sheffield derby. Scousers? Nah any hatred there comes from the Evertonians, Liverpool have bigger fish to fry and know that they'll win more than they lose. Glasgow? 4 league derbys a year and probably 1 or 2 in the cups as well? Diluted and relies on politics for its needle.

Brizzle? Nottnam? Stowk? Mismatches to say the least. North East? Get knotted, separate cities. Maybe Brum is on a par nowadays but historically a mismatch.

Nah the steel city derby is as 'good' as it gets for me. The real reason we get into the crowd and massiveness debates is because deep down we're similar sized clubs who rarely lord it over the other for decades. The major difference is that we seem to know this whilst the pigs seem convinced they deserve to be rubbing shoulders with the elite. It's humility v hubris, realism v fantasy. We have to win to deflate their egos. They have to win to keep them inflated. But it matters so FUCKING much!!!!

It's not as if I'll get any major grief should the worse come to the worse, I hardly know any piglets and seldom come into contact with those I do. There's no logic behind why I'll sleep badly for the next 4 nights. No reason why I'm twitching and will be shaking like a shitting dog on Monday night. Just come on you beautiful fucking Bladesmen and smash those twats out of fucking sight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

excuse my French.
Yes . I've lost count of the Sheffield derbies I've watched over the years but for some reason , this one means as much if not more than any I can remember - I'm almost in Kevin Keegan territory on this one .

I'd love it , I'd just love it ..........

It's Sheffield, plain and simple.
No adding some shite American type nick name. If people don't know what Sheffield is famous for they can bollocks.

And here I was thinking I was the only blade in Manchester!
Im in Lancashire (near Accrington) so dont get to hear much rivalry apart from social media but I get what you mean

Working as normal on Monday. I've purposely created a (very manageable) backlog at work to ensure that I'll be bang at it all day and I don't really have a moment to think about the game.

Then I'll get in the car to drive home and scream all the way there.

I don’t tend to think about it all that much until about two hours before kick off, then it starts to stress me out until the final whistle goes.

Given our current position in the table the three points is by far the most important thing about Monday night but I think most Blades are just thinking about retaining the bragging rights. That will never change.

I am of course no different. Can’t stand them and want to hammer them out of site but I do have a bigger picture in my head and all I’m really thinking about as of 18:50 on a Friday night is keeping a top two place.

used to care a lot more about it , but its just another game in reality , only get 3 points the same
the only benefit of winning is shutting their fans gobshite responses for a while
win lose or draw , we have bigger fish to fry

The vicar at my church in Bristol is a fowls fan and so is his lad. We watched a derby together last season on tv at his, not sure re Monday but we might do the same. I even turned up to his interview in a blades shirt to wind him up!

For me, it's a few things, usually in this order:

More recently, the hope that we just turn up and play our way, our attacking football and show what we can, as with any big match. The 2-4 win was the best example of this.

That they are deluded and arrogant and base their hype on nothing. They talk of being bigger and better despite basing this on nothing bar attendances, no recent success and a dilapidated stadium. To win is to put them in their place, to lose to fuel their unfounded hype.

They're a bunch of fucking fuckwits. Arrogance personified but the worst kind, based on nothing.

I hope we give them a fucking tonking, but I won't enjoy watching, I never do.

If we lose, we go again in the Rotherham and Brentford matches in pursuit of the bigger prize.

If they win, they'll still be gobbing off about it in 40 years.

Bert met the then Bishop of Grantham a couple of times, the Bishop had a season ticket on the Wednesday Kop.

Exactly, small club mentality and symptomatic of their nothingness.

it's just the derby to me, or rather THE derby.
Just got a gloating phone call from a Leeds fan, armchair one of course.
'How you feeling about today' he asked.
' FIne, just going out for a bite to eat.'
' Not nervous?' he said.
'What about' I replied
'You know what' he said laughing.
'I'll wait till Monday to get nervous' I said, 'we don't play till then,'
Armchair fans. Shakes head. Don't you just love 'em
