Tin Hat On !! Dowell v Duffy

At the end of the game last night Dowell had one of the bigest smiles of all the players as he went down the tunnel. The appreciation at the end from the fans showed him if he did not already know what we are all about. I think we will see a lot more good things from him in the weeks to come. Good player.

Write Duffs off at your peril, he is far too good a player to just use him from the bench. I don't altogether go with the view that Duffs need space to works, seems to me he is better in tight spaces & can get around players almost standing still. Dowell I am pleased with so far but he is different to Duffs in that he drives forward at pace & needs more of the pitch simply due to that fact. Not sure he is quick but he is a rangey sort of runner who gets us up the pitch quicker. He isn't as clever as Duffs is at making himself available for short interplay passing, but then again not many are, & it looks like he is a clean striker of the ball, so I don't see why they cannot play together in the same team.
Great time to be a Blade though, we have a lot more strings to our bow now & can mix up the play if one system is not quite working, which is fantastic.

Duffy is a legend, the bouncykiller,
But all decent players and decent men understand that there are other players who are breathing down their necks to displace them.
If these other players show a bit of form they will get in the team in front of them, sometimes a player is just better suited to a certain type of opposition which means that certain players will have to step aside.

There are world class superstars sat on the bench at many clubs around the world (I know this because a pig told me)

Our players accept it and seem to want to work even harder to get back in the team

It’s a lovely problem to have if it’s one vs. the other. Both are very good but very different in playing style.

We can accommodate both, either together on some occasions or in rotation. We need different options and I rate them both. Why choose.

I would start with Duffy every single game because he's one of the most creative midfielders I've ever seen at the Lane.
On the other hand one thing we have lacked for a while is the ability to break and counter at pace. Dowell isn't lightening but he cuts across players and goes directly at their back line causing big problems. He seems to shoot more than Duffy as well.
Either way I think Duffy is still the ideal starter and Dowell is the perfect plan B or alternative.

Think we should go with duffs against the pigs, if for nothing else but what he managed there last season...

Remember, he came off the bench to slay the bounce.

He works his magic best when the press is tiring, and the spaces have started to appear.

McGoldrick playing behind the front two also gives us a bit more of a physical presence in that position as well........

McGoldrick and physical presence in the same sentence?????

Duffy to start. He has this habit of finding pockets of space between the lines. Dowell is the future, Duffy is now.

that is pretty much spot on. we will stilll need duffy as worrying last season & parts of this. we were a 1 man team if duffy played & played well we were fantastic. if he didnt we barely created much. its a relief that we hace replacement for duffy when he needs a break. as cant have Barnsley playing bad so stick duffy on after 28 mins we wanted to rest him

Different styles. Removal of Duffy was understandable yesterday and therefore YES!!!! I agreed with a CW substitution. Dowell was playing in a completely different position than he'd ever seen before and he handled it very well even though Pulis was trying to target him in the first half. The lad has a football brain and he wasn't getting dragged into anything. Don't think Duff could or would have played there. On a "like for like basis", they simply aren't. Duffy works the space and moves us forward by finding the gaps, receiving and playing the ball, whilst Dowell runs into the gaps to receive and then is more direct. I don't think Dowell could operate in the tight spaces between 30 yards and 70 yards that Duff does, but equally I don't see Duff doing a long run forward into a channel. Just glad Woodburn has fucked off! :D

I still think he's a reyt player. Puts himself about. Wilder wasn't impressed when he wimped out of the challenge t'other night, but given the nature of that bunch of Pulis thugs, wouldn't overly blame McGoldrick

I agree wholeheartedly great signing.
Couldn’t tackle a good dinner though.
