This feels like an important thread to have, after how dejected we all felt against Villa.

We were strong, resolute and organised eveneven a much weakened back line. We were disciplined but unspectacular on the whole.

What are your thoughts?

Dowell, very good - he's settling into our set up and showing more glimpses of the player we hope he can be.

Stearman - great header and model pro. Switched on and bags of passion to do well for the squad, despite being big part this season.

Cranie - great professional performance.

Freeman - where is he again?

McGoldrick - his work ethic never dips, tracks back, works very hard for the side, shows moments of class. At other times he shoots like he doesn't have feet.

Sharp - best striker on the pitch and in the division. His hold up play is also hugely underrated.

Also nice to see that Norwich fluffed up. Pukki scoring again though, the sod.

Well done Blades, we beat a good side in Boro, whilst they are organised they are uninspiring, ugly and rely on physique. They lump it long in the hope that their strikers find scraps.

Great result. We mean business.

Baldock 7/10: Grafted, like George does. Shame he's injured.
Egan 8/10. Much better than Friday late on and seems to have some confidence back. Positionally made a lot of difference in snuffing out any attacking ambitions
Cranie 7/10: I know people are being a bit excited by him, but he's 'developing', and not as good as say, Basham in that role. Played well and got down the flank, but has more to do to secure a start every week over Bash or Jack
Stevens 7/10: Had a good game overall, some passes a bit wonky at times and not as penetrating as he has been
Norwood 6/10: Bit weak in midfield and wasteful with passes he thinks he can make. He links okay, and does the 'in front of the back three' role to his credit, but needs to think before he launches it at 200mph at the fans over in the JSS
Fleck 7/10: Grafted in midfield quite well but he sill … still isn't at the standard he was last season for some reason. If this is because he is missing Coutts and Duffy in that triangle then maybe Wilder needs to address that. Clumsy yellow card which wasn't unlike the one he went for last season
Dowell 5/10: Sorry guys, but he's another I am struggling to see the light about. Everton mate of mine said he has an abundance of skill and pace but I have yet to see this deployed effectively. Against Villa he was beaten over 30m by Hutton and Hourigane, tonight he was easily predictable and seemed still not to be able to adapt to the Championship game where it is far more pressing and close-set which means less speed and PL style space to play into. I haven't seen anything outstanding about him yet that say
Duffy 7.5/10: Offers. When he is on the pitch, the opposition instantly goes on the back foot because he has that ability to have them worried and isn't predictable. Shame he's only had 45 mins, but I think this might be more and more his output these days as he gets older.
McGoldrick 9/10: ran his fucking socks off in all formations tonight. Back defending, getting his foot in, harrying, worrying the defence and causing the opposition no end of problems. Great game.
Sharp 6/10: Again with my marking of Billy, for sheer effort and leading the line he gets 11/10, but tonight he got nowt much to feed off even when they went down to ten men. Always gives 100% and is a reyt legend for us.

I thought McGoldrick was poor tonight and when he got into a good position his crossing was poor and he had a shot that was poor as well from memory - shooting at the keeper from out wide again. Whereas I thought Madine was excellent and gave us a real threat.

All bout opinions though, and I thought Stears was quality like you did.

Said on another thread that tonight should have [hopefully] made us all feel much better.

Just the type of determined result and performance that was needed. We had a couple of hairy moments in defence, but nothing out of the ordinary when facing a strong, direct team like Boro.

Overall however, and second half in particular we just outclassed them. Great performances all over the pitch but Cranie, Sharp, McG and Egan stood out for me.

The kid played 90 minutes for first time in a year in a position he's never played before and got kicked to shit all game. I thought he did great considering.

Agree with much of your post, but not this. He’s been our outstanding midfielder by miles in each of the last 2 games. A different player to Duffy but a big upgrade, can do lots of things that Duffy can’t. Very clever & gifted player destined for the top, hopefully with us. Influences games hugely, on & off the ball.

Dowell for me was decent. Decent pace & some nice touches, I'd like to see him run at people more though when given the chance and be a bit less wasteful in possession.

Madine was excellent for me tonight, held it up well, made a proper nuisance of himself.

McG didn't have his best game. He puts in 110% effort, but his first touch when running towards the ball was awful and lost possession more than once due to it.

Not just with the result in isolation but because I really thought this week had the potential to derail us, and I had a bad feeling. Friday's events strengthened that.

However, 4 points from the last two games is a real good return and tonight was a real solid performance, even if Boro weren't great and we didn't play as much Tuftyball as most weeks.

Big praise for Hendo. I criticised him for the first goal at Villa for not being decisive and coming and taking the lot. He did that tonight on a few occasions.

Cranie did well and I was particularly pleased for Stears who is a top pro and has been really patient and supportive.

But I was, Sitwell, I was. Okay, he was playing out of position for much of the game and it was difficult to see what his brief was once Baldock went off, Stearman came on and Stevens was redeployed. But I am expecting a lot more from someone who has a reputation for beating defenders, lashing in 25 yarders and turning a game on it's head with prodigious skill. Boro basically hemmed him in yesterday and he miscontrolled and misjudged quite a few key passes or allowed himself to become isolated one too many times. As said, my Everton mate asks me how he's getting on and from three matches I have seen him play now, I haven't been blown away. I'd like to see him playing alongside Duffy in an 'V' midfield to see if the pair of them can put oppositions defences on the back foot more often or even if Wilder goes for a narrow 3-2-3-2 formation. I've no doubt he has the talent. I have yet to see it shine through.

As for Madine - Wilder changed it at 55 mins onwards. Madine to me was pretty ineffective compared to Sharp who had practically nowt but managed to stay on his feet much of the time.

Agree with much of your post, but not this. He’s been our outstanding midfielder by miles in each of the last 2 games. A different player to Duffy but a big upgrade, can do lots of things that Duffy can’t. Very clever & gifted player destined for the top, hopefully with us. Influences games hugely, on & off the ball.

I liked how their player (Shotton I think) basically completely took him out and he just got up and carried on running until the ref pulled it back.

Very rare to see these days and refreshing that he's obviously had the "We don't do that bollocks" talk from Wilder.

Immediately after the Villa game I was depressed and only had bad thoughts, but when I woke up the next day, I didn't care about the awful last 10mins or that we had drawn, because bloody hell we battered and fairly decent Villa side with some big money players. (Again)

After last night with two of our influential players in Bash and Joc missing and Baldock for most of the second half I thought to myself can we play another way and Although I know we wasnt at our best but we sure played well. Egan never lost a battle and Cranie is a top top player aswell, Madine changed it for us. I sMeLL pRemIER lEaGue

But I was, Sitwell, I was. Okay, he was playing out of position for much of the game and it was difficult to see what his brief was once Baldock went off, Stearman came on and Stevens was redeployed. But I am expecting a lot more from someone who has a reputation for beating defenders, lashing in 25 yarders and turning a game on it's head with prodigious skill. Boro basically hemmed him in yesterday and he miscontrolled and misjudged quite a few key passes or allowed himself to become isolated one too many times. As said, my Everton mate asks me how he's getting on and from three matches I have seen him play now, I haven't been blown away. I'd like to see him playing alongside Duffy in an 'V' midfield to see if the pair of them can put oppositions defences on the back foot more often or even if Wilder goes for a narrow 3-2-3-2 formation. I've no doubt he has the talent. I have yet to see it shine through.

As for Madine - Wilder changed it at 55 mins onwards. Madine to me was pretty ineffective compared to Sharp who had practically nowt but managed to stay on his feet much of the time.

I see where you're coming from with Dowell, however considering he played the first half at left wing back, I thought he played remarkably well. You can't expect him to be a complete player at 21, making his 3rd start (I think) in our very unique side.

I also disagree that Madine was ineffective. The Boro centre halves didn't know what to do with him. He won absolutely everything that was thrown at him, should have won at least 1 penalty, almost scored after being dragged back and effectively made the ball stick up front.

Colossal centre forward performance from him last night.

Well apart from one last night he headed against the post for Sharp's second last Friday and headed one down for sharp to score his first. Apart from that he's done nowt.

Yes: Against Norwich from a long way out after they scored their second, he hit the inside of the post against Villa, got an assist for Sharps first, had a shot yesterday that was destined to hit the post and go in but McGoldrick touched it in from an offside position - but apart from that...
