Thank you for the information Dnblade and EddiecolqhounslegI left in 1970 and the swimming pool, along with a whole other raft of improvements, was being built in preparation for the introduction of comprehensive education. It became "Rowlinson Campus" and the new complex was officially opened in October 1971.

The council has rammed down our throats constantly of the need to restrict cars from the city centre since day dot and the punitive measures imposed upon motorists to achieve this. The photos from that era (and there are plenty in this thread) show what a load of bollocks the council's claims were - there's hardly ever any fucking cars in the shot. However, they will be able to counter this by claiming they achieved their main objective - of creating a Soviet-era replica city centre in place of the thriving metropolis we once had.
