So here’s the plan….

McCabe sends an email to The Prince (or vice-versa):-

“Hey look, I know that we no longer see eye to eye but I’ve got a proposal that could greatly benefit us both.
United now have a golden opportunity to get promoted that may never present itself again in our lifetimes.
What do you say we both give Chris Wilder £5M to spend as he sees fit in this transfer window?

Best case scenario, the extra £10M makes all the difference, we get promoted and hit the £200M jackpot (20% chance?)
Most likely scenario, he invests the £10M wisely and grows the £10M to a value of maybe £15-40M with a shrewd acquisition or two (70% chance?)
Worst case scenario, he invests the £10M badly and reduces the £10M to a value of maybe £2M (10% chance?)

If we do succeed, we all become heroes to the supporters and legends forever more.
If we fail, well at least nobody can say we didn’t try and push the boat out a little when the opportunity was there.
Seems like a no-brainer of a worthwhile gamble to me. What do you say?”

I doubt that either of them have five million going spare. McCabe's got it on paper but he'd probably have to flog one of his property investments to raise that kind of dosh.

Footballing myths #562: “Promotion to the Premier League is worth £200 million”.

Yes, the income might be £200 million, but the costs associated with recruitment, infrastructure and salaries would increase proportionally (maybe even more so - look at how some teams struggle financially). In terms of what it’s ‘worth’ to the Director/CEO, it is potentially even negative in the long run. It’s good for prestige, though.

As a matter of interest, where have those %age chances come from ?

Like Kev became a hero and a legend forever more the last time he helped United get into the Premier League?

That's a fair point but he was a hero at the time and still retains a lot of kudos and credit for helping to get us up there.
It's some of his misguided actions since then that have stopped him retaining legend status.
Still time though..

Stoke Villa Wba , pigs Brentford Swans all have 10 million pound plus playesr , its a long shot at success . They are no better than us they have not got Wilder Knill or Sharp .

They didn't have Wilder investing their £10M. If they had, they would be higher up the table.

Pure guesswork. As Bert might say, I consulted my memory and my brain. Do you think they are wildly inaccurate?

Bert would never say 'I' :)

Bearing in mind they'd have to walk into the team to have any chance of having a 'guaranteed' type effect, 2 players for £10M suggests Madine types i.e. not hugely sought after, but good Chumpionship players or maybe Prem players towards the end of their careers. To say there's a 1 in 5 chance of that guaranteeing promotion is probably over-stating it, many have tried spending more than that at this stage of the season and failed.

Similarly, to say there's a 70% chance of Wilder improving said players to 3 or 4 times their cost presumes we're buying 'improvable' players, it also presumes that we didn't go up which suggests they weren't the world beaters we thought they were :)

I appreciate the argument that Wilder has bought well, increased players value so far but he started from a low position, it's much harder to do it from here on in particularly at this stupid time of the year for prices etc

People want us to go out and spend 10-12m on a player because other teams do so.
Are they in debt? Is their situation untenable after going for it for say 12-18 months? Can they really afford it? Does it even work?
We have a good manager who has repeatedly stated how he is going about business for the best interests of our club, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Dear Kev

I’m confused. We both agreed to sign Madine instead of spending proper brass on quality additions.

Have you got Alzheimer’s?

Yours

HH

That was Dooley. Dooley sadly passed away and we slumped down the league. Then Wilder comes and the rest is history.

Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking McCabe is the mastermind....

And for the record instead of a 10m spend I'd much rather see us strengthen the squad significantly with say 3/4 signings 2/3m a piece and pay them 10-15k a week instead of a 10m man on 40-50.

مساء الخير كيفن ،

I don't think we can statistically be very far off a 1 in 5 chance of promotion right now.
(3 out of 24 or 1 in 8 goes up every season)

How much has Wilder spent on the squad so far? £10M maybe? How much is the squad worth now?
Let's say two more new signings with the quality of Egan (£4M) and Norwood (£2M) + their wages. That's achievable with £10M.
They don't have to be the "Madine" type of players you mention, they could be the O'Connell/Fleck/Stevens type.
I would trust Wilder to make the right choices. Just needs to be given the chance.

I think we can all agree that the type we're missing, the type who would make the difference are in the creative/striking options and they're the ones who cost the money. Warnock insists that Madine made a difference to them last season and at around £6M I guess that's the kind we're talking about so we might already have one of them ;)

As I said earlier, you can't compare what Wilder has done in the market so far to what he needs to do now money wise, it's a completely different ball game. That's not to say he couldn't achieve the same results shopping in a different shop but he can't afford to buy 4 or 5 hoping that 3 will pay off, he has to get it absolutely right.

Roughly translates as ‘Do one’?

If you (partly) blame McCabe for our relegation(s), then he deserves at least some credit for our promotions.

Dooley may have overseen our PL promotion, but he didn't fund it.
