I was really excited about this lad but have yet to see much from him - he shows worrying signs of being a Premiership ‘show pony’ who thinks that he can get through games with a few fancy flicks and letting everybody else do his work for him. I’d say that he’s just taking time to adjust but he already knows the league after his stint at Forest. Let’s hope that he’s just rusty or that Wilder tells him some home truths.

Quick, look, its a new signing!

It's an unpopular opinion for me because it isn't based on what I've seen in the 2 brief league appearances he's made. The cup game was a farce so should be discounted.

Have you not been told that if you want to have a dig at a new signing it should be aimed towards Madine?

Agree, that the “show pony” description could be valid

But I see it as a plus. You can see that, like David Brooks, he fancies himself, goes looking for the ball and tries difficult stuff, which most of the time fails.

It’s encouraging but we’ll see if it’s style over substance. As already mentioned Woodburn and Wilson had neither style or substance, so he’s appears better than them. I like what I’ve seen so far but it’s too early to judge.

I think I will give him a bit more time before forming any kind of solid opinion.

He has shown more in 2/3 games than James Wilson and Ben Woodburn ever did.

On that evidence, I would give the lad the benefit of the doubt thus far !

UTB
To show more in 2/3 games than wilson and Woodburn ever did is not saying a great deal but it's far to early to be judging the lad, I'll give him until next week.

If we'd won this would seem the most inaccurate description I can think of. The fact that we lost seems to have given this poor description of Dowell some credence, but fortunately saner heads prevail, and it's clear that the brief glimpse we've seen has shown there's a player in there. How effective he'll be? Well give the lad a full game to show what he's capable of before deciding that he's not good enough.

I thought the opposite when I saw him come on yesterday
ok 1 blind pass out of defense, set them on the attack , bit like norwoods v WBA but this one didn’t result in a goal ,
as well as showing annoyance with himself for over cooking the pass through to Leon , which had it been on the money would have probably been the equalizer,
I thought both subs did ok , yes even Madine , who surprised me with how big a fucker he actually is

I don't think the tactics really helped him yesterday, got put on in place of Duffy, but only had a few minutes in that role before we abandoned playing football mostly and he dropped deeper to start lumping it over the top.

He tried to get involved and had a couple of runs, but clearly needs more time to get used to the amount of movement needed in our side as Stevens was looking for passes to space where Duffy or Fleck would have moved to normally, while Dowell was stood ball-watching. He looks like he could at least make a contribution at some point, unlike a lot of of midfield additions since promotion.

Unpopular Dowell opinions. Rumour has it he thinks Prince Philip doesn’t need to have any sort of check on his fitness to drive, that Jeremy Clarkson is a National Treasure, and that La La Land was more worthy of an Oscar than Moonlight. He’s also in his first few weeks since joining been heard on more than one occasion to describe Pete McKee’s art as “quite overrated to be honest”.

I’m assuming that’s the sort of thing the OP title meant? I haven’t read it but surely it couldn’t mean we’re already making snap judgments on the player...

He showed good quality and technic early in the game against Barnet before being swallowed up in the mediocrity of a team performance.
Played a few minutes in a dour match against QPR and yesterday when our team shape and game plan had gone out the window due to the over casual team performance, yes he can be judged as a failure on the back of all that.
Some fans want to take a deep breath, I don't include you in that bunch though boxer.

Apologies for copying and pasting-I wrote this on deadbat’s match report. Here’s a run down of what I saw Dowell do.

1. Not long after coming on, slipped Fleck nicely through to the byline.
2. Driven/Slid ball to McG
3. Lovely through ball over the top to Sharp, but offside.
4. Received a tough ball in our lower third, got caught in possession, and led to Billy’s foul and a free kick to Swansea in a dangerous position.
5. Brought ball forward and played a dangerousish forward ball to Sharp in the box, but was cut out.

*Fleck comes off for Madine and we seem to change formation to a diamond 4-4-2 with Dowell on the left of the diamond, and Bash on the right.

6. After a long spell of Swansea possession, we break. He carries it a fair distance, slipped in Baldock on the overlap, whose dangerous cross leads to Basham holding the ball in between his legs while on the floor, like we did when we were kids.

*Clarke comes on and we start to hit a fair few long balls.

7. Didn’t get to a Stevens throw-in. Maybe could have been stronger, maybe not a great throw.
8. Played that lazy and blind pass, which led to a decent chance for Swansea.
9. Took corner on right side. It was OK.
10. Great turn and run from almost half way line, but then
11. Overhits through ball to Clarke
12. Pass back to JOC
13. Nice through ball to Sharp, which led to PK claim.

There’s a couple of mistakes there, but I think he looks to get the ball into dangerous areas quickly, and carries the ball forward quite effortlessly. He could maybe have gotten on the ball more, but we changed formation not long after he came on, and then also seemed to change approach. I reckon he’s going to be a really decent option for Duffy and even Fleck’s position, depending on the opposition.

I can't think who he looks like when runs with the ball. Anyone any ideas?

He’s played 30 mins and looked class what on earth are you on about

As I say, I hope he does well, I’m just struggling to understand why anybody would think that he has so far.

He has several bags of ability

46 minutes without a goal he needs to get several of his bags packed.

I reserve the right to change my mind in the next 2 minutes though. :)

If you change the clock on your Smart TV you can fast forward to next weekend and see the highlights from our game at Norwich. Dowell was excellent and instrumental in our victory.
