In Chris's programme notes from yesterday:

"That's two that we've brought in during the early part of the month and we plan to strengthen further. We've got people in mind and are keeping a very close eye on the market with regards to our potential targets. Very often what happens is that a move at Premier League level triggers things off and opens doors, either at the club bringing someone in or elsewhere. Obviously we want to do things as quickly as possible, but patience is also required in certain situations".

I’m led to believe the top of the pitch is where he wants to strengthen further.

Interested if he considered sending back Johnson.

He played 2 league cup games for Boro.

Is that enough to stop him playing elsewhere?

Can you send someone back on a season long loan? I know the loan can be terminated if all parties agree but cant see Boro agreeing to terminate the loan. The move for them will have been 100% financial rather than development

Bonkers rule.
Proper shit. Means if a player plays 1 game for his club then is bought in August, and the move doesn't work out, he's pretty much fucked unless his old club can buy him/loan him back.

Look at the lad Doidge at Forest Green after the Bolton debacle.

Secured move to Championship, buys house in Bolton. Move falls through. Stuck in League Two for rest of the season.

Surely the problem is actually with the transfer window staying open during the start of the season? Obviously they can’t close it early as many other leagues start later so they’ve got themselves in a mess.
It seem quite clear why you can’t having players able to play for multiple teams as it’s open to misuse.

How is it open to misuse? What harm would it make to have 3/4 teams maximum?

Hypothetically speaking a goalkeeper goes on loan in August and has a falling out with the manager after his first game. He goes back to his parent club in October due to the loan not working out. He then gets asked about an emergency loan to another club - he has to decide whether to get valuable first team experience even if just for a month, or stay sat in his clubs reserve team for the rest of the season possibly.

Stupid rule.

I think they need to somehow come up with a process of managing exceptions so that you don't end up restraining someone's ability to perform their trade.

What you can't have is say a hotshot striker with a great record against say Team A. You play them early in the season and he scores. You loan him to Team B and he also then scores vs Team A in 2 games spanning the closure of the Summer window and the closing of the January window. Come the JTW final day, you loan him to Team C and he subsequently scores vs Team A in their match.

I'd say Team A can feel justifiably wronged to have had to face Hotshot striker 4 times when some of their rivals faced him far less.

Now this would be a querk but it's not impossible to engineer to impede a rival.

Knowing our luck it'd be Mark Ward :(

Hypothetically, you are a top Premiership team you could loan out players for short term to a team your rivals are playing, call them back and then loan to another in order to try and favorably influence their results.
In your scenario you could loan out 2-3 players to 4 different teams.
You could also pull loans you've already agreed in order to loan them again from teams fighting relegation, say if one of their rivals had someone you wanted to purchase.
Same goes for promotion from the Championship, you could easily look to influence it by removing or adding players to teams.

The loan system is fine. If you are going on loan for the year don't play in the first couple of weeks for your parent club and the problem is solved.
The FA should be putting in rules to dissuade teams from stockpiling youth talent anyway and increasing the amount of teams would take that the other way.

Only a fool would buy a property in Bolton on the promise of a move from that car-crash of a club.

Actually, I could have just stopped at "only a fool would buy a property in Bolton"

The whole reason for the transfer window closing was to stop clubs buying or loaning their way out of trouble towards the end of the season. The loan system probably needs looking at as the whole transfer/loan fiasco we see twice a year makes it harder for clubs to plan / build because you're at the mercy of the big (or bigger) boys as usual. The reserve league has also affected this IMO as fringe players don't get any game time these days so the only option is for them to go out on loan which has a knock-on effect down the chain. Season long loans should be exactly that, no recalls or 1/2 season from January.
