That is bang out of order. Why wouldn't young fans talk about Billy in the same way that people of my age talk about the early 70's Blades side? The lad is in rich form, and gives 100%, one of Chris Wilder's first things he did was to make Billy the team Captain, he leads by example.

I grew up watching Tony Currie, he was my hero, it was an absolute honour to watch him play and I will never forget doing so.

However, it’s just not possible to make a fair comparison, between footballers who played the game in different eras.

The pitches, pace of play, fitness levels, footballs and boots are forever evolving. Say what you like but, the game Jimmy Hagen played, was not the same game Tony Currie played and the game today, is not the same as Tony Currie played.

Players can only be compared to their peers and in that respect, Billy Sharp has more than earned the right to be considered a Sheffield United legend, by those of his generation and who are we to deny them a hero?

Hard to compare Sharp and Currie, as they are totally different types of player. Just as Sharp is not in the same league as Lineker or Shearer, Currie was never in the same league as Pele or Eusebio. It has been great to watch both Currie and Sharp at the Lane.

I don’t have humble opinions. I try to educate.

Excel in the top tier. Badger and Currie did.

It doesn’t really matter, anyway. We’re in the business of getting promotion as a team, not hero-worshipping an individual simply because of where he comes from or which team he supports. This is not yet well understood in S2. Not much is.

Our shame is we didn’t recognise his talents sooner.

That’s true insofar as a couple of unenlightened managers were too clueless to play him to his strengths. But the player we see today is so much better than the lad we had ten years ago. His physical limitations are about the same, but the intelligence in his game is on a different level altogether. Some of his all round performances this season must be best he’s ever put in.
