Easier to raise this when we’ve just won but what’s gone wrong with our corners - we have players who should be able to deliver the ball to the right area and decent headers of the ball but we haven’t presented much of a threat from corners all season?

Started so strongly when Norwood came in, think we got 3 goals from corners in not many more games.

Today I would say wind.

Overall though I would say we're too clever. Too close to the GK, short and nowt, players moving around but never make it to where the ball is either at all or with enough time to actually get above it.

Same with free kicks most of the time too, though we had a good one today. An occasional reminder of keeping it simple wouldn't go amiss, Norwood, Dowell, Duffy, Fleck can all have a go at goal, particularly Norwood - he should go direct more.

Good job we just signed a physical striker to get on the end of them (although he probably won't see much play unless we need to mix it up a bit)

What is scoring from a corner anyway ?
Corner comes in, somebody heads it into the net which doesn't happen that often, or somebody scores directly from a corner which practically never happens

Anything else and it's not scoring from a corner.

If a corner comes in and the ref gives a penalty for pushing or holding, we'd have scored from a penalty, not a corner
If a corner comes in and gets headed out and then volleyed back into the net, we haven't scored from a corner either technically

I'd say directly from a corner obviously is scoring from a corner.

Corner to head/arse/foot/chest and in is scoring from a corner.

Corner to head/arse/foot/chest to other head/arse/foot/chest and in is scoring from a corner. I think this can be multiple knock downs and passes in the box and it's still a goal from a corner.

If it comes out to around 40-50 yards or back to the wing and goes back in, you've not scored from a corner, it's a new passage of play.

If you get a penalty or freekick you've earned it from the corner but you've not scored from a corner.

That’s why Madines come in

Only about 3% of corners result in goals so if we’ve had 200 corners we should have 6 goals. Not sure how many we HAVE scored off top of my head but I’d guess it’s thereabouts, maybe 4-5.

Point is we could be better but the difference between being average at corners and being “good” at them is only a couple of goals over the whole season.

The real issue with corners is giving possession back to the opposing team, if only 3% are scored.

We often seem to not win the ball that gets cleared out from our corner, particularly on the edge of the box.

What I’m getting at is if there’s a low probability of scoring from one, at least try our best to keep the ball. We did have a good spell yesterday where we forced 3-4 corners in succession though!

Defenders are defending properly maybe?

Didn’t think we’d scored any off the top of your head mate!

Think I saw a stat the other day that said we've had more corners than anyone else in the division yet we've only scored 3 goals from them, 2 of which were own goals?

Poor chance of scoring and inevitably results in gifting possession to the opposition. If I had my way I’d take most of them short and work the ball in to the box.

Think Woody scored 6 DIRECT from corners - amazing
I know of 4.

v Newcastle (h) League Cup Sept 1969
v Leicester (a) Sept 1971
v Coventry (h) Nov 1971
v Norwich (h) Jan 1973
What were the other two?

Below is the goal against Newcastle. Keeper Iam McFaul looks bamboozled

The difference between top corner scorers and bottom is some 11 goals though notably West Brom with 10 % success rate could have achieved 25 goals from corners in that season had they been awarded the 259 corners that Man City did .

Thought we should have tried short corners today. Too many QPR players in box. I know when its like that there is always a chance of ball pinging off players and ending in net. But I thought if we took it short a few times it would have drawn their players out of the box.

Blackburn's Mulgrew seems able to do this, but it does seem rarer now. All these goalies way over 6 foot tall must make it harder.

Every time we get a corner I worry. The team we are playing are more likely to score from our corner than we are. QPR looked most dangerous when we had a corner. Twice they broke quickly and only tactical fouls resulting in yellows prevented a good chance being created.

Talking of set pieces, did anyone spot Flecks run over, spin and cross from a free-kick? Almost came off and utilised famously by Dortmund:-

Yeah, good point

I like the England method from the World cup. Surprised this hasn't caught on and for me it would yield more goals than we currently get from corners.

Think we actually put quality corners in well at least much better than before when don’t hit the first man much more.

Just reckon it’s down to us not having loads of 6,6 giants.

Corners aren’t easy to score from anyway teams very rarely score form a corner statistically

We've never been as successful from corners since that vlog posted all our little tricks last Autumn
