JOC

He is nothing like a Morgan type player. That is an utterly ridiculous statement.

Why? Heart on sleeve, puts his head where angels fear to tread? Song talks about heading bricks. I think you need to rethink before going on the attack.

Both great players for us but similar no. Technically JOC is streets ahead but he loses headers Morgan would never have lost.

One of the most impressive things about him for me is that he never gets injured. Same goes for Basham and Stevens. All superb physically.

A genuine heart in mouth moment today when he went down in [apparent] agony clutching his leg on the touchline. Only seen him go down like that once before when Bannan had a swipe at him [but missed] at the sty and got yellow carded :D, proper shithousing from JOC on that occasion. Today I actually thought to myself 'here we go, key player out injured'. But he just got up and the world was rosie again.

JOC would walk into most teams in the prem , but teams in the prem like Everton would rather spend 30 million quid on players abroad.

Everybody is going on about JOC and apart from his passing which was a little suspect early on. Nobody mentioning Egan and what a fooking good job he's doing. along with Basham, Winning headers, Blocks and Clearances, which you might say is what a defender is for. But for me yesterday and for most of the season, Been right on the Money. Long may it Continue.

I don't know what you've been reading, since most people have been extremely complimentary of Egan after his first 6 or so games. Including comments in this thread!

6 Games. Been a rock for longer than that. Josh. Its been the best defensive set up for a while. I was just on about yesterday. No harm done. All Blades Aren't we.

Playd through the pain barrier for us last season (achilles trouble). It was in the Blackburn programme.

He's a key player, strong and reliable that's all. Bash for me is better on the other side.

I don't want to be rude, but this opinion shows how little you watch them without the ball.

Basham is a cult hero, and I love him, however, his defending isn't flawless. He makes some great Hollywood tackles and always puts his body on the line, but his positioning and reading of the game isn't close to Egan or O'Connell.

I'll give you 2 more, Basham & Egan. Only 2 more to find.

Basham's great, but as I said above, I don't think he's anywhere near as good as O'Connell defensively. In terms of going forward, Basham is better at carrying the ball although O'Connell seems to get more crosses in.

As for Egan; he's been absoloutely phenomenal for us but let's not get carried away comparing him to the 2 other centre backs - that central role is a lot different, and he's more of a sweeper mopping up. Requires better organisation and decision making but not the requirement to go forward and get involved in attacks- something not to be taken for granted.

I'm short, there all fantastic, but there's a reason why Egan cost us £4m, Basham hasn't attracted any real interest and O'Connell was linked with multiple PL clubs.

Not only is O'Connell our most valuable defender, but he's quite possibly the most valuable player in the squad.
As Ricky mentioned too; his ability to play every game without injury is much underappreciated.

I was speaking to a knowledgable Blade the other week who knows a lot about coaching.

He told me that Basham isn’t good enough to play as a central defender at Championship level.
He was also adamant that Basham wasn’t good enough to play in midfield at this level either.

So what does Wilder do about someone that’s not quite good enough?
He creates this role perfectly suited to Bashams strengths. As he’s not the best central defender he puts Bash in a 3 central defenders situation so he has plenty of help and cover. He knows Bash has a great engine so encourages him to be a spare man going forward.
So Bash tends not to get picked up when he’s supporting Baldock on the right wing.

The end result is that Basham plays his role brilliantly.

So Wilder creates a position/style of play to suit players deemed not good enough ?

Are you sure about that ?

Egan, JOC or Bash for best CB. What a debate that is
They’re all better at different things. That’s what makes them such a good unit.

Bash is the best going forward and supporting his wing back.
Egan is the best at reading the game and the best talker, hence why he’s in the middle.
JOC is the best technically, has perfect timing of his headers and tackles and never gets beaten for pace.

You’ve totally misunderstood the post. It was sarcasm. Aimed at Pinchy I’m assuming.

Was it ? I appear to be having a few ' whoosh ' moments this morning . One of the perils of posting in an infrequent manner right now . As you were :)

I think he now goes under the radar because of how consistently superb he is and it deserves mentioning.

I’m running out of superlatives. At his best defensively today against a quick forward line he pretty much negated that right side along with Stevens and Fleck. Great aerially, rarely beaten for pace, strong as an ox, good on the ball, even a decent dribbler we saw late in the second half :D He hasn’t got many weaknesses has he? If he has the 3 centre back unit certainly disguises them.

We have to face facts now - there are minimum 5/6 of our team that are already Premier League ready. JOC is the very top of that list. I actually think Stevens is next up due to a lack of good left backs and the amount he’s kicked on. Then Fleck even though he’s had a quiet season by his standards, Egan and Norwood. Remains to be seen with the others but they’re likely to prove us wrong (again).

Our resolve will be tested for this bunch and if we don’t go up and have to cash in on JOC - what a ride it’s been. Best centre half since Harry (dare I say he’s better than Harry was for us) and an absolute joy to watch every week.

Let’s just enjoy these lads while we can. What will be will be. If we go up there’s no doubt we’ll be able to keep them all - so here’s hoping!

UTB
I don't even think he's even the best centre half at the club and I think he still has a long way to go in his development
Great championship player and always improving but only playing premiership.football will make him a premiership player but I'm not sure he would be good enough In a back four depends who he plays alongside I guess

We’ll find out next season one way or the other. I’m certain of that.

One thing he can definitely improve on is his goalscoring he should be in double figures but although he seems to be the target for set plays his finishing is poor

Yeah I agree, in fact he was all over the place for the first 15 minutes today.

BUT, what a consistently brilliant, solid player we have in him. Can't see him being here beyond the summer if we don't go up though, or at least come close enough to convince him to give it one more go.
just watched the 10 minutes highlights on the website and there was a patch in the second half that started with a corner. The ball was cleared and then put back in the box again and cleared gain. The move finished with JOC racing into the inside right position and getting fouled on the edge of their box for a free kick. A full 40 seconds after the corner was taken our left sided centre back charging around the right hand side of their penalty area.

Decent free kick from Fleck followed as well. Great stuff from JOC and the blades

JOC is definitely under appreciated by some of our fans as witnessed in this very thread, if anything happens to him I’ll go on record now by saying it would be our most important player missing and would derail us in a big way.

It’s not just the fact he’s a very good player but it’s the fact all of our backline would suffer as they all play great as a unit, whether it’s a 3 or a 5, defending or going forward.

What also helped our backline out was taking Freeman out of the firing line and bringing Baldock in, I didn’t realise at the time what a huge role this would play, our defence hasn’t looked back and I can’t see Freeman getting back in.

Stevens form this season has also helped them all out and JOC should take some of the plaudits for that as he covers him and overlaps him when required brilliantly taking the pressure of Stevens.

JOCs reading of the game is McGrath esque.

I think JOC is the weak link of the back line............But what a fucking great “weak link” he is.

If hes that good then we should sell him asap to the first bidder then Mcabe can keep the money without reinvesting it. Thats how we will progress as a club.

Have to say that not long after JOC joined us, he became my favourite player and just what we needed at the time after what seemed like a ridiculously long period with no strong decent centre halves. Young, big unit with surprising pace and good feet. I felt that first season, albeit in League 1, he was superb especially when we went with three CB's. He blossomed alongside the experienced Wright. I still think he's a really good player and part of what is now a well drilled excellent unit that have obviously got a great understanding between the three of them particularly. However I do think that JOC could do more in terms of travelling with the ball as he used to regularly and he does like that diagonal cross-field ball that must have come off once. Perhaps his instructions are slightly more defensive now we're in the Championship and it's noticeable that Basham seems to be the one that gets forward the most. I think that's a shame because although I love Chris, his final ball is nowhere near as good as Jack's.

For me Egan has proven to be the last piece in that defensive jigsaw, he's been colossal. Clearly, a defender who loves to defend. Not fair to compare, his role is vastly different to the other two.
