Is it possible that once we knew that Norwich had lost their cup game against Pompey that it was to our advantage to 'manage' our cup exit to enable us to keep our league fixture with them as a Saturday 3pm k.o. It allowed us to play them sandwiched between their difficult fixtures of WBA,Brum & Leeds and also avoid an awkward midweek re- arranged game.Is it possible that it wasn't actually a dreadful performance against Barnet, but a cunning plan to give us an advantage over one of our promotion rivals.......are we that cunning or were we just crap ?

You could ask Chris Wilder BUT I wouldn't advise it

I'll go crap with a fortuitous byproduct.

Playing Norwich on a Saturday is not worth "knocked out of FA Cup at first attempt by non-league opponents" being in the history books forever.
It’s not about playing them on a Saturday. It’s about avoiding a fixture pile up towards the end of the season. We’ve got a small squad and we don’t want to limp into the playoffs again with half of them injured or knackered. Or miss out on the playoffs for the same reasons.

I think we've got a strong squad tbh, it's what made Barnet even more shocking, not like we played kids who had 10 appearances between them.

How did we 'manage' it though?

How does any team manage it?

We're not talking individual players doing daft stuff for betting for example.

The side Wilder put out was understandable and should have been capable of better. Barnet raised their game and played very well.

I'm very uncomfortable with the notion the manager threw the game, or at least was happy to.

He may not have lost any sleep over it, and is happy to focus on the league, but I'm really struggling to accept he tried to lose without making it obvious.

If that was the case, I doubt Chris would have come out afterwards and slated the players in the way that he did.

Either that or he was just appeasing the fans who were crying about it, knowing inside that it wasn’t the worst thing the world.

How do you throw a game?

Any of those 11 could play for us in the league this season, 8 of them have and 1 has only just signed. Therefore Wilder must think they’re of Championship standard.

He put 11 championship standard players out against a non-league team. That’s not managing an edit, that’s sensibly resting players and trying to win.

If he’s that happy at losing, he doesn’t bring Billy and Duffy on.

My guess is that what Wilder said after the game was mostly for show. Watch the Barnet goal. Two defenders go to the man out wide, neither gets close to him to put pressure on the ball, and they allow him the space to play an easy square ball. We did that to them all game. Standing off the man on the ball, not getting tight to them, basically treating it like a stand off with Messi as though they might nick it past them with their pace and trickery. We were even doing it late in the game.

I'm not saying that we threw the game. I don't think that for a second. But I think it was incredibly clear that not putting in a tough challenge or getting stuck in and picking up knocks was a much bigger priority than winning the game.

Just look at our pre-season friendly at the Lane. Lundstrum was putting in heavy challenges from the off, and yet against Barnet he didn't put one in all game. No way that's not in part from instruction.

It's sad, but we just didn't care about the cup.

Fair point

Ask Lane Swan and 'ther one.

Has a team ever won a Cup and got Promoted in the same season in recent times?

If we lost Norwood and Stevens to injury we’d be in trouble.

I would add Egan to that too - there are times when we push really on at home that he's a got virtually the entire pitch to himself at the back in the middle.

For me - Egan was a fantastic signing - perhaps he played in a 4 for Brentford and wasn't as effective.

Agree but I’m not a Steargoat hater, he’d do a job, just not as well as Egan. You could also add Hendo, whilst Moore is OK, I wouldn’t want to rely on him for a large number of games.

There are a few players that we could cover with players that aren’t quite as good but I think we’d really struggle without Stevens or Norwood as we have no one near what they can do (yes, Coutts when he’s fit but he isn’t yet). JOC would be a big loss too.

No, the match was deliberately thrown because Chris Wilder is an alien and needs time to regenerate his fake human outer shell, which takes time and if the fixtures piled up he wouldn't be able to spend long enough plugged into his descaling-skin-regenerator, which he has hidden away behind the lockers in the changing room at the new women's stadium (which hasn't been built yet, but alien Wilder can time jump, so that's ok) and is hidden behind a sign which says "whites only", otherwise his head would keep popping greenish-bluey scales whilst he's in the dugout and the FA would dock us points for... well, for not being West Ham. This is obviously a far more believable explanation.

Either that or he was just appeasing the fans who were crying about it, knowing inside that it wasn’t the worst thing the world.
A risky strategy to do it so vehemently.

Yep. I said at HT that we were playing as if our main priority was to avoid getting injured. Some of the ‘standing off’ had me pulling my hair out.

Third round day used to be the best day of the season. It’s such a shame.

The last conspiracy story to rival this one ended up with some poor cunt nailed to a cross.
