Wilder reacts

Without a doubt. I don't think anyone could've expected that kind of a result. No fight. No graft. Was a limp display. And on that showing. It shows the second rate team have a cat in hell's chance of making it to the first team.

I highly doubt he, or anyone, could have expected a performance that good from a non league side and a performance that shockingly bad from a championship reserve side.
I agree. But a whole new team, with a front 2 that failed in their one previous game together was going to struggle.

My feeling is he should have changed formation to fit these players

He should have.

Moore - no probs with this choice
Stears - no probs here either
Cranie - not a marrauding CB like Bash
Bryan - barely played for months and I assume never in this type of overlapping CB role
Freeman - out of form
Johnson - not a wingback
Coutts - no problem
Lundstram - ALWAYS struggles when the pace is high
Clarke - understandable selection
Washington - ditto

All of them together was a recipe for disaster. Admittedly, it could have clicked, but the chances of that happening with no first teamers in there was minimal IMO and a huge risk.

Well they are supposed to train in that formation and should all fit into it since they are backups for the positions they were in, having said that I can't see how a team of professional footballers could play that poorly if they were decent in training.

We don't know if they were decent in training though. We just didn't have any other players to choose from

He picked that team. A chunk of the blame is his

True enough but if you look at the pre match thread I picked that exact team so I can't complain myself.

That team should have beat them easily, it's not like all of them have been in mothballs, most of them get regular first team minutes.

Also we didn't look hugely better to me when we brought Bash Duff and Bill on, too late maybe, but still think it would've taken a while for us to score. Ponderous, indecisive and slow.

Agree, team looked strong enough. But I do think he should have picked a system to suit them rather than trying to fit them into the first XI one

I think the two in the middle were the big issue. Lundstram not good enough and Coutts still waaaay off the pace. They set the languid tone that permeated throughout and we never cycled the ball quick or incisevly enough.

The only mistake he made was putting the three first teamers on in the second half, we could have ended up drawing or ( god forbid ) winning and risking promotion

Apart from that he got it spot on today

Honest appraisal from a Blades fan, he will be hurting like the rest of , he will be ashamed a the piss poor performance and he will also be questioning many of HIS SIGNINGS!
We need to improve the squad, not with the likes of Washington, Johnson, Cranie , it’s a bloody long list to be fair....for this to happen he needs support from above!
Oh and that fuckwit Madine ain’t the answer!

A little bit yes, I agree. We know to many of our supporters he’s beyond reproach and I understand why. He’s earned that to some degree however we win or lose as a collective and he picked the team that according to him put in an “arrogant” performance. That mentality shouldn’t have been allowed to creep in.

I’m not going to criticise the manager for picking the reserve team - have we all forgotten how the Coutts injury torpedoed our season? The first team squad has just completed the Christmas/New Year fixtures with a full house of points, a rest for them may be policy.

Does anyone think that an injury to say, Norwood or Fleck would not have a similar effect this season, given that the reserves can provide performances like today’s? It’s perfectly obvious where Chris Wilder’s priorities lie, and rightly so.

I think Chris disrespected the FA Cup, the opposition and most of all the paying fans. That team was always a massive gamble and it would have been a miracle if it had somehow all come together on the day.

I didn't expect them to be as bad as they were both individually and collectively but as many teams have before us - we asked for it.

Hopefully we will never have to completely replace the whole team for a league match.........you can cope with throwing a couple of squad players in when needed, just shows that any more than that and we'd struggle.

No issues with resting the 11 that have played over Christmas. Gutted we’ve had to bring them on to be honest.

Most worrying is our lack of squad depth. But on the other hand if we had 11 players in the squad who could slot straight into, and maintain, the levels set by the starting 11 then we would be clear top.

Most concerning for me are the 2 wing back positions and another Striker who’s similar to Billy

Fuckin ell madine ain't signed yet and he still gets it in the neck

So now lundstrum isn't good enough to play against..........Barnet! Bloody hell he must be crap

This, 100%.

Mind you, when thousands of fans find something better to do on a Sunday afternoon, it's clear it's not just Wilder that doesn't give a fuck about the Cup.

Wilder talks about the arrogance, but it's a big part of his job to make sure there's none of that.

I wonder if he didn't say too much to the players before the game and used it as some sort of test of their mentality? (Which they failed emphatically)

They shouldn't need telling anything. They're all professionals and they're all playing for a place in the first team. Attitude and approach shouldn't have been a problem.

This was an opportunity for all of the “second string” to show Wilder that they are ready when required. Unfortunately many of this team aren’t good enough for the “second string.”
