I seem to have run into several people on this forum in the last day who seem to think booing players in our colours is acceptable.

No matter how much I’ve disliked certain United players I’ve never even thought about booing. Not at a sub (remember the Cresswell one well, pathetic), not when his names been read out and not even a performance. I’ve grumbled at full time and stuff but I couldn’t ever bring myself to boo even under Adkins. The occasional censored word would pop out, with multiple adjectives, but never a boo.

I find the thought of booing United players completely and utterly dumbfounding and completely detrimental to anything we’re trying to achieve. Nevermind even thinking about it with the lads and management we’ve got at our disposal now.

So I’ll take a vote, is it acceptable to boo one of your own?

Personally I've never booed, purely because it's a strange noise to make imho.

It's a largely pointless argument in that it happens at every single game everywhere, always has done, and always will.

Any of us saying it's counterproductive will never change that.

I’m more interested in how many actually think it’s ok/do it. I’d just like to know.

Deary me, you’re a world class contrarian aren’t you? Haha! Admit it, the reactions you’re getting to taking the opposing view is fueling these threads? I’m prone to a bit of anti-authoritarianism myself, so I get it. I don’t agree, but I respect the tactics :)

I’m of the inclination to give the team pelters if they really deserve it- but at full time. How is booing/jeering them going to improve things during a game?

I didnt want Marlon King, I dont want Gary Madine. But I didnt boo King and I wont boo Madine either.

I’m interested as to how many of our fans find booing acceptable.

I have never booed, will never boo. It's just something I don't do, unless I'm at a pantomime (and even then I would be a little cautious). Madine's name being announced over the tannoy might, just might, cause me to surprise myself. Otherwise no, I don't boo.
However, Eric Cartman , that's about the only thing I agree with you on the Madine thread, so don't take this as some sort of vindication from me. I especially don't agree with the sneering and aggressive tone you've taken on there when arguing with Blades in defence of a thug. There's no need for it.

I mean, acceptable and beneficial are completely different terms. There’s plenty of times it’s acceptable, however unlikely some of those scenarios are. The fella that had his jaw repurposed probably has justifiable reasons. Is it beneficial? I dunno, depends on the character of the individual player. Some would wilt, some stiffen their spine in an attempt to prove everyone wrong.

Paul Richardson was booed after being sent off for deliberately kicking an opponent in the face whilst they were both on the floor. Quite rightly, wearing our shirt or not.

I have voted no but probably shouldn’t have as I did ‘boo’ or words to that effect, Hammond.

I remember about 10 years ago, we lost at home to Newcastle in the Championship. 1 nil I think.

They'd got relegated with a team that should never had got relegated and turned up with the likes of Nolan and Carroll in the team. We gave it 100% , were really unlucky and they just made that extra but of quality count. We didn't deserve to lose and the team gave its all.

Anyway, at full time I was walking out and these two youngish bloke were boooing themselves senseless . I asked why they were booing when we'd played really well, been unlucky and didn't deserve to lose. Their answer was " cos we lost", no matter how much I said we'd played well and didn't deserve to lose I got the same response "cos we lost".

Not much of a story but it just seems some will boo whatever, which I find sad.

You'll not find out because not all of our fans are on here believe it or not.

I'd say 98% aren't.

Maybe I'll start a poll, "are you a member of S24SU?"
It’s a fair proportion of our fanbase.

How many “x% of the U.K. think...” polls have you ever seen? I personally haven’t been asked in any of these polls.

Ooh no, it's a great noise. I love booing, it's the nearest a man can get to howling like a wolf. Now banging your hands together to make a noise..??? I mean, what's all that about, eh? Is it an ancient tribal ritual to scare spirits away or something? Banging your hands together is a bit ridiculous but booing is great fun.

BOOOOOOOOOOO! BOOOOOOOO! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

See, it's brilliant! And it transcribes wonderfully into the written word as well, which banging you hands together, er, doesn't.

Imagine this.

Madine starts our next game against QPR. He has an absolute stinker of a match and the Blades fans start getting on his back. In the 80th minute we're losing 0-1 and he completely loses his rag and gets himself sent off. He leaves the field of play to a cacophany of boos and jeers which riles him up even more. He approaches the dug-out visibly fuming. He starts giving it back to the Blades fans by shouting and swearing and making wanker signs towards the Kop. Wilder comes on to the pitch to try to get him down the tunnel as quickly as possible but Madine pushes him away. He rips off his red and white shirt and throws it to the ground and then spits on it.

Would you join in with the booing if that happened? I think you definitely would.

Thanks, but I don’t do it to seek any sort of approval, so I don’t care.

If you want the team to play with confidence and give their all for the club it’s probably best not to shout ‘cunt’ for 99 minutes.

See, this is where you need to be more careful in your language. You seem to be disregarding the vast chasm that exists between showing displeasure, and yelling cunt for the whole match.

Admit to singing 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' at half-time against Shrewsbury, but I was definitely not alone.
