Memries of Barnet

You can see Underhill on one of the Tube lines - saw it on the way to Wembley several times.

Ah, those fond memries...

Those were the days.

I got to see Barnet play at Boston United once. A good day out, I got to see the Boston Stump.

A new team for us.

Depending on how you look at it, we have played either 88 or 89 of the 91 current league teams in a competitive match.

We have not played Accrington Stanley or Forest Green Rovers. The Accrington we beat in the test match to get promoted in 1893 has no connection with the present club.

The odd situation is Newport County. We played them during the 1980s but they went out of business in 1989. The current club of the same name is therefore arguably not the same side, though I think they claim the history.

We have also played the following current league clubs in cup matches but not yet met in the league:

Morecambe
Cheltenham Town
Macclesfield Town

Finally, the current league team we have gone longest without meeting in a competitive match is Lincoln. We last met them in the League Cup in 2000-1. The current league team we have gone longest without meeting in a league game is Cambridge - we last played them in 1979, though we met in the cup in 2013-4.

Here endeth the trivia dump.

My only real memory of Barnet is a pub at the top of the hill called The Dandy Lion. Since I was there the football club have moved grounds though.

I went to see Barnet at Millmoor once. Barry Fry was their manager and they were scoring loads of goals. We went in the away end expecting to enjoy a goalfest. Rotherham won 3-0, I think Shaun Goater scored and Barnet were absolutely shit.

Not any more you can't :( https://www.times-series.co.uk/news/15860805.barnet-fc-ground-underhill-stadium-begins-demolition/

I used to go and watch Barnet as I lived down the road for about 10 years. During that time I saw some surprisingly good players turn out for them - Albert Adomah, Yannick Bolasie, Ricky Holmes... Edgar Davids was player-manager for a few years.

My one and only trip to Underhill was to see them against Port Vale in the Edgar Davids era. Lee Hughes was at Vale and booed all game, which was nice to see.

Yet to visit The Hive, so would be wholly against a replay for this one...

The Carrier Bag Firm are pleased to report the Barnet Brewery was our 21st Brewery visit of the 2018-19 competition year. I was there on 17 August 2018 en route to see SUFC U23 away at Watford - played at Wingate & Finchley FC - drew one all. I had their 3.9% English Bitter called Glory on cask in the attached The Black Horse pub. The 2018-19 Brewery visit count now stands at 67.

Parked in the Barnet club carpark / sports centre to catch the tube at the cup semi final v Hull.

Are you trying to say you recognised their potential at the time and you are indeed god's gift to scouting?

You are among friends on here and we can share your troubles. Come on, fess up and admit you had no idea who any of them were at the time but saw later that they'd played at Barnet.

You can see the new place 'The Hive' when approaching Canons Park station.

My other half's parents live about 15 mins walk from there at Stanmore; therefore gutted it's not away, as we are likely down that weekend for a birthday.

That said, there's barely any pubs near the ground, with the exception of the odd small Irish place, so it wouldn't be the most fun of days.

In fairness Adomah was absolutely brilliant for a lower League 2 team and made defenders look like idiots every single game. Unfortunately he would get knocked over by a stiff breeze (this was about 10 years ago) and was usually knackered by about 60 minutes. I'm amazed he's gone on to play in the Premier League and for Ghana!

I saw them play Chesterfield during Town's last season at Saltergate. Paul Furlong was playing for Barnet that day - and was about four years younger than his manager - though I couldn't tell you who the gaffer was though.

That John Matthews 35 yarder though, around New Year's eve 1978, to salvage a point v Cambridge United in a 3 3 draw.
On snow as well.

How strange, I was also at that game, in the away end, as I had followed what Barnet had done in going up the leagues and thought it would be a great game. One of a handful of non-Blades games I've ever been to.
