Why did he even need a shout he was facing Basham?

What Norwood and Stevens did was far far worse than Johnsons naivety in losing possession in the first place.

We didn’t deserve three points, but we should have took them :(

I actually thought he looked good when he came on. Direct and quick. We were very bad today. People are also forgetting that he lost the ball in their half after carrying it out of ours and away from danger. A pass, like the rest of the game would of ended with the opposition with the ball. We couldnt string 3 passes together today! I believe he did the right thing and it was the 90 mins before and defending at the end that lost us points.
Rotherham looked really good. Played good football.
 
Johnson lost the ball.
Stevens flunked the tackle.
Norwood shanked his touch into our own box...
...and Bash isn't blameless either because I want my Centre Half steaming through the lot and Row Zedding at that point.

Duffy flunked a clearance/second ball in the lead up to the first and their were several men on their heels that allowed the lad the time and space to touch and set.

None of that is said to point fingers but to say we win as a collective and we lose as one too.

I cant f(_)ckin believe he's done that today.

28 years old and he's basically gone off like an 18 year old trying to look good as an individual.

Take a look at what happened ot Rick Holmes if you want to know what happens to players not playing for the team.

A lot of players who did anything like that for man utd never played for them again.

Wouldn't even have johnson in the squad for the next couple of games, balls to the 2 mistakes afterwards they were at least mistakes in the moment and misjudging the ball. What johnson did was completely about attitude and he's cost 2 precious points and our best result of the season (in light of the overall performance). Absolute plank.

A forward brought on to help protect a lead by closing down or providing an outlet and relieving pressure on the defence.

He seemed ideal for that sort of role, but not if today's stupidity is anything to go by.

Bring back Matt Done. Good old safe, steady runaround Doney....

Matty Done would be a better option than a few we have now, Johnson, Washington...

Just watched this again and of the three players who made bad mistakes that cost us the two points, Johnson's was easily the least culpable. Players lose the ball in attacking positions like that all the time. Stevens made a complete hash of his tackle but Norwood, love him dearly as we all do, was even worse. As someone said, he looked tired and should have been replaced by Paul Coutts long before. However, trying to turn Marvin Johnson into a scapegoat when he's hardly had a chance to kick a ball for us is pathetic.

The point is we were running the clock down. He had a man outside him to take the ball to the corner. Pretty basic stuff, his decision making was terrible for apro.

Yes, he's probably instructed to run at them in situations like that. Teams chasing a game hate being forced to track back and defend, so it can be a good idea.

On this situation two players caught up with him, and Johnson didn't really have anyone to pass to. He may have wanted to go for the corner flag, but Taylor showed him inside and Towell challenged him:

Johnson obviously failed to beat Towell and the attack broke down, but we had plenty of chances to deal with the following break.

Does make you wonder what the result would be if we played against the United team of 02/03 or 05/06. I’d always assumed the current one would probably win through the better football played, but seeing how we struggled yesterday against that style of football I’m not convinced the current team would.

Before anyone leaps onto the above comment as anti-Wilder, no I wouldn’t change our current style or system...
 
Basham seems to have escaped any flack in the goal from most quarters but if anyone looks at all the players reaction after the goal that signified to me that he didn’t give Norwood a shout and that’s all it would’ve taken.

Norwood wasn’t facing Basham, if he was he wouldn’t have tried to get something on it. If Norwood doesn’t get a shout (which I didn’t think he did) then he’s obviously got to try and get something on it which explains it pretty easy to me. Norwood did have his worst game in a Blades shirt though, that there is no doubt.

Ultimately, until we find out whether there was a shout or not it’s hard to say for definite who was to blame out of Norwood and Basham but looking at the evidence I know where my money would be going, just by using pure logic.

Stevens attempting to cut the ball out wasn’t his best decision either.

Just before that freeze frame when Johnson was running at their defence, there was loads of space behind and I was shouting at him (from the sofa) to just chip it over them and run into the space. As the defenders were backtracking I reckon Johnson would have beat them to it. He didn’t

I'm thinking one of : Axel Smeets, Dries Boussatta, Laurent Ten Heuvel, Wilko de Vogt or Davy Gysbrechts?

Here's the video. He spends some time getting the ball fully under control, and then has to beat two players, including the pacey Taylor, after that. I think we're being a bit harsh on him.



Wilder pointed out that Fleck was bombing forward to overlap, though he was really too late. Clarke wasn't really helping him out (from the screen shot you'd think a 1-2 would have been possible, but it's easier said than done). As the move broke down we had then lost three players, but we had plenty of other players back to deal with the situation. The errors of Stevens and Norwood, bad luck and poor refereeing (it was offside) were the main reasons we conceded.

IMO Johnson has opportunities at 20-30 seconds in that video to knock it past the defence and run onto it (via the by-line); he would have outpaced them as they were on the backfoot. I reckon he was going for glory and tried to have a run on goal.

When he checked back he could have given it to Fleck and then gone towards the corner for the return ball.

He made a mistake. I was calling for Johnson to come on from about 60mins. We needed his pace. Yes hindsight is great and he should've ran it into the corner, but he made a mistake by trying to come inside. If he had managed to get it through that defenders legs though, he would've had a clear run at goal and would've put the game to bed.

I think he was more trying to impress to win a place in the team, ultimately his decision ended up backfiring.

I'm more than happy for him to feature again. He'll learn from that mistake no doubt

He tried to nutmeg him. If that comes off we'd all be singing his praises. In hindsight he should've gone for a rugby style line-out and booted the ball to go out of play as near to the corner flag as possible
