Duffy MK2 or a striker?

Ok. But less than a permanent signing. £500k difference between Leonard/Evans and Norwood about covers it and keeps the transfer surplus

Decent loan signings come on big wages. I agree we need to do it but it’s not as straightforward as you are suggesting, it’s a big financial outlay.

Dont think I suggested it was easy. Just easier than a permanent signing - neither owner has to commit any funds past June

Striker for me ! I hope beyond hope the Andy Carroll rumour is true . Will he miss a few games - definitely. Would he make a difference in the ones he plays - massively! Mcgoldrick is supposed to be injury prone and how many games has he missed ? Does it make financial sense - probably not but at least it would show ambition! The guy is class and everyone would fear him in this division. Completely different to anything and if he could stay fit would be nowhere near Bramall Lane !! I know I will be shot down in flames , and obviously if medical wise there is no chance of him playing at least half the games then fine . But what if ...
As ever UTB !!
Don’t disagree.

However.

Along the same lines.

Cheaper.

Less injury prone.

Fulfils the same role.

Tom Elliott at Millwall.

In Sharp we have one of the most prolific poachers in UK football, but he ain’t ever gonna pick the ball up 40 yds out, run, take 3 on and score from outside the box.
I think we need to mix it up a bit, the reason the pigs got the draw they came for is they knew exactly what to expect. In 90 mins we had 75% possession, that’s almost 70mins of ball time, yet only 5 shots on target. That’s one shot on target every 14 minutes. In a game played predominantly in their final third. Wilder should have got a message over From min 20 to half time just fuckin shoot! Deflection, rebound, keeper error, owt can happen. But if nothing else it will get their defenders think ‘what’s he gonna do?’ when we get within 30 yards, some thing they didn’t have to worry about Friday nite.
Oh, and I’m guessing that Norwoods last second free kick and the missed pen count as on target, so that’s 3 shots on target from 70mins ball time - FFS!

Have to be a striker for me.

Duffy when fit must always start. As must Sharp.

Didsy, plays a sort of hybrid CF/#10 type role most of the time. He is pretty good at this and therefore can provide adequate if not excellent cover for the Duffy job. Not at all sure he is an out and out CF though. And so this is where I think we are lacking.

Washington and Clarke seem capable of only bit part roles and are clearly not the answer.

I reckon Wilder will be allowed to bring in a £5m striker in January, which will help enormously. Assuming he gets the right one !!

A £5M striker? Where from? We paid £4M for a defender at this level. And we sold a young midfielder who'd only played 9 games for us, for £12M. So what division are we shopping in then to get a striker for £5M? Wilder won't look beyond these shores for any player - so it's going to have to be someone from a non-league division for that money, or someone who is sick, lame, lazy or summat?

Exactly! Don't expect to get many likes for telling it how it is though mate, because most on here will see you as being critical for mentioning it. The passing football is exquisite and I'm loving watching it, but we need a better end product to it, otherwise what's the point?

It's what I was saying before the game and in subsequent posts. We constantly overplay it. And it's not just "a little tweak" that's needed, is a major change of mindset when attacking. And I think it possibly needs a change of players. And no, I'm not saying the current players aren't good - they are - but to change all this procrastination that goes on in the 18 yard box you need players with pace who will take other players on and run at them directly. Like Brooks did on occasions. Like Jamie Murphy did on many occasions. There are many others that spring to mind...Paul Devlin, Steve Kabba, Tony Agana...these type of players, with pace, fear nothing about driving straight at the heart of the opposition defence and they make defenders have kittens.

As an experiment, I'd like to see us utilise Marvin Johnson down the centre in attack. The reason I say that is because he's got good pace and I've noticed on the few occasions that he's played for us so far, he's not afraid to have a shot, or whip an early ball in from the flank.

Someone with a killer final ball, striking options aren't really the issue for me.

Take Friday night for example. We had all the play and possession but how many times did we truly cut them open with a defence splitting pass? I accept that's difficult when they have 11 behind the ball but we do have a bit of a habit of struggling to break down teams who set up like that.

Another creative type is my priority. If we got Defoe in as I've seen mentioned then that would be a bonus, he'd still score plenty for us in half a season.

Ultimately this could be our greatest chance in a long time as there's no stand out team in the division so now is the time to twist, COYRAWW!!

I take your point Ideally it would be £10m+.

But this would come with £30k pw plus wages, and that’s the real issue.

You can still get a decent striker for £5m that would improve us. Or perhaps a loan till May on big wages.

We are seriously not a million miles off. A fit and firing Hogan or Rhodes alongside Sharp would probably have been enough to do the trick. This would have reduced the need to buy Washington and meant that Didsy and Clarke would have been the off the bench options.

Altogether better than where we are presently at offensively.

It really is just the one key signing that we need to get right. IMHO.

If we are serious about promotion and with what i have seen so far we will never have a better chance, then we need both.
But its going to be like mission impossible we have two owner's fighting for ownership through the courts to start with.
Then January is the most difficult time to sign anyone, clubs know you are desperate and ask inflated fees.
Nobody in our division is going to want to sell to us unless we pay well over the odds.
We tried lower leagues last season and we ended up shipping them all out within six months. We don't need squad players we need two attacking players that can go straight into the 1st team.
The only hope i can see is Premiership loans, but hopefully the Coady, Henderson
type not the Wilson type.

Probably both a Duffy replacement and another striker. CW clearly was after the former in the summer but it didnt quite come off (Freeman). We really are missing Brooks in the tight games this season. A player with a bit of magic to turn things in our favour. So this type is a priority for me.

Easier said than done though with our squabbling owners and the money needed.

If the powers that be sanctioned the money to bring in the likes of Egan, Norwood and Henderson just to confirm our mid table mediocrety status in the Championship as some were predicting, you'd think that if the prospect of £190m+ is still firmly in our sights come January, somehow, some way they’d find a way to overcome the issues and bring the two players we need WITHOUT flogging anybody off.

Football is a simple game, inject 20m, buy Freeman and someone like Maupay and we go up.

A striker has been obvious for weeks now - proved once again last night. Close games, all be it by the S6 lot just sitting in, needs someone with a bit of extra skill.

The recurring theme is we dominate games with good quality possession and do very little in the 18 yard box to finish chances.

The balls across from SS side last night were just begging someone to get in front of a defender, and was evidence yet again.

75% possession against a well organised but shocking poor Wednesday team spoke volumes.

It's a problem we need to solve. The solution will be really difficult as looking in todays sports news - Stirling signs a £300,000K per week contract !

UTB

300 million a week is clearly too much

I like the look of Eze at QPR. He's pacy and unpredictable.
Before we get to the transfer window we need to do some work on the training ground.
Sharp and Co will score enough if we stop over playing.

He's definitely not pacy

I 'll put my tin hat on, but I'd like us to have a look for another right wing back. Neither Freeman or Baldock can cross a ball.
