We're on The Iron Horse to Doncaster, where the U23s are away at The Keepmoat Stadium in the Premier League Cup Group Stage (7pm). Currently played one, won one. The SUFC site has Jake Wright & Daniel Lafferty involved.
I'll post team, goal & bollocks updates on my Twitter

And a more considered rant on my Blog at some point

Let us just hope the GRASS who got in my way at Forest doesn't appear again. Read that story here.

I assume those beers in Nottingham were halves, at those strengths on pints, I’d be amazed you could sit up straight never mind remember you’d been Grassed.

One of our sons has gone with a Rovers supporting mate. He just phoned to tell me Wright and Lafferty are playing. He is excited about hopefully seeing the Blades triumph.

I've stayed up way past Closing Time to rush out my U23 Match Report Blog. A lovely Jordan Hallam Hat Trick. With key assists from a very lively Simeon Oure. And, a hit & miss performance from Jake Wright. Two Bars. Three Beers.
Read here.....

Son thought Wright could have been carded, even a red, very early on. Said it was an ok match.
Indeed, Wright was a-clattering & a-clanging in Minute Three. Got a stern talking too. I "blame" him for Doncaster's goal - a bit.

Needs a bit of practice to get a Deadbat A* :)
I was not very interested in his report, he was supposed to have gone to a cricket practice and meet one of his County mates.
In terms of his report being a Deadbat A*, he needs to cut out the cliches he hears on SSN and what the loons say on Footy Heaven. He is only 14 and will learn.

Might we see Jordan Hallam make a first team appearance this season ? Seems to score a lot in the U23s, but I know sod all about him to be fair.

Much as I enjoy your reviews of the U23s etc, I'm much more intrigued by the Forest incident. Am I getting this right? A gang of four men turn up and bully all around them, you have a word so one of them fetches a steward to try and put you out?

Not far off. They were pissed friendly at kick off. Dad even shook my hand. As the game went on, they were getting more frustrated without a goal. And, then doubly frustrated as people weren't joining in with their songs. As they got more & more angry, their language got worse. An older lady asked them to mind it. That's when the bullying chirping, chuntering started. Nothing physical. Deep into 90+ stoppage time, my mate came up the aisle, they blocked him, words (only) were exchanged & the son went and brought a Steward from the front. Technically he brought the Steward for my mate, not me. Grassssss.

My judgement call. We won't see Hallam this season in the First Team. Indeed, I don't think we ever will. Not, a particular judgement on Jordan. But, we're an Academy Blocker Club. Every window "oooohhhh just one more big investment" "oooohhhh great we've signed Leonard Holmes Carruthers, we can really kick on now"

I'm not complaining. But, some signings are no better, indeed worse than we've already got. They just create a bigger queue in front of the best Academy lads. No argument. That's football in 2018.

I'll stick my neck out & say - Jordan will play League Football, just not for us, wrong time for both parties.

I think he'd be worth a punt, maybe in a FA Cup game. Love him to come on Friday and bag a late winner...

Can't over look a good finisher like Hallam he's also good with free kicks and corners as you know Phil.some young players can be pushed through quickly others need a bit more time ,I think Wilder and Co will be keeping an eye on him.He strikes me as an intelligent footballer not blessed with any real pace or technic like D Brooke's has but something you can't teach a natural finisher with the ability to take excellent dead ball situations. He like Brooksy needs that bit longer to mature and maybe we will have a good striker coming through.
Feel sure he will get his chance if he keeps working hard.

Phil makes a valid point.

For all that Hallam may bring to the table, it wasn’t enough for Wilder to not sign Washington and promote him up the order.

The valid point I’d also add to is that I’d rather go with some home grown youth and save transfers and agent fees. What has Thomas contributed that Hallam couldn’t, in thegrand scheme of things? What has Heneghan done over what Semple could do?

Maybe that’s harsh on Chris. He can’t get every signing right but some of his signings have been punts. Why not punt on one of our own?

Massive hindsight statement coming up but Billy’s career had had a similar trajectory to United’s. We could have saved all those striker signings by just persevering with Sharp all that time!

Take your point but if we don’t sign a striker. Is he worse that Washington or Evans until the end of the season ?

I’d rather we got a No.10 than a striker so could he step up for half a season !

Actually finlaytheblade makes a great point which has triggered a thought. And someone on my Twitter made a different point. I'm a little jaundiced with my "Academy Blockers" point. I'm going to have another go at drawing it all together.

As we move/have moved from a going nowhere League 1 Club to a challenging for the Championship Play Off Club, there are implications for our Academy players.

Negatively, many of the current Academy crop will have been recruited when we were in L1. That's not to say we were trying to recruit L1 players, just that as a L1 Club we were less attractive to high quality Youngsters. Some of those may fall short trying to get into a top Championship side.

But, positively, we are now attractive enough to try to recruit quality older Academy players. Rhys Norrington-Davies would be a good example.

But, negatively, we can be more active in the transfer market for First Team Squad, two for every position, players. Creating a longer, Academy Blocker queue in front of Youngsters.

But, positively, we don't have to rush Youngsters any more. We've got the resources & status to send Semple Smith Parkhouse Gilmour Slater Graham Bennett RND etc to Scotland, non league & L1 & L2. To let them develop, see what they've got, wait for them, not rush them. That's finlaytheblade s excellent "bit more time" point.

I'm not trying to see whether negatives outweigh positives, I'm just trying to explain the landscape has changed.

And I am a BIG Jordan Hallam fan. He's not all flair like Diego, Brooks & even Stephen Mallon. He's a very rounded player. Great on dead balls. Whips 'em in from wide. Simple approach to direct free kicks. Pick a spot. Hit a spot. Beat the wall. Don't start it way wide & hope for draw & fade. Aim at the goal. The U23s are very flexible in positions. Jordan often plays the 10. He's a multi trick pony. He'll play League Football imho. Maybe not at The Lane though.

It’s quite simple. When we were in L1 our priority was to get out of it. That’s all. Because you can only have a single priority, anything else can cause you to lose focus on your main aim.

CW was of the opinion that the best way to get promoted was to use senior, experienced players who provided consistent performances. He has been proven correct.

Since then, the two owners have fallen out. Our future, and Wilder’s future is uncertain. The only thing Wilder can do to protect himself against this is to ensure we finish as high up the table as possible, so if the Prince takes over he’s less likely to get rid immediately or, if they can’t form a working relationship, so that Wilder can get another decent job and not go back to being a L1 manager.

There’s no reason at this point to try and develop players who’ll be good in a couple of years when you don’t know if you’ll be around in two years. They’re all at clubs where they can progress in the short term and learn their trade whilst the ownership is being sorted out.

Not sure about that - you're saying Semple has gone to Queen of the South because Wilder is worried what the Big Prinz will do. Seems all a bit BBC Spy Thriller.

I think Callum has probably just had a chat with Binnion & Dungworth. Maybe....
