Probably regretting his decision to pick Wales over England now. Lets just hope we've got a decent sell on fee. Could see him at Spurs or Arsenal in a couple of years.

How often can you belittle Sheffield United in one article winner 2018.

The classic calling us "Sheffield".

Flying so low under the radar (at the top end of the Championship?) that no-one noticed.

Completely ignoring that he was at United and part of our set up for ~4 years.

He was playing for Sheffield United at the time and flying so low beneath the radar that Eddie Howe was able to pick him up this summer for £10m, rising to, wait for it, £11.5m.

That money is not exactly peanuts but for a 20-year-old home-produced player with an international pedigree (Brooks has since turned 21) it is the nearest thing you will find to a bargain in the absurdly over-priced marketplace of English football.

Annoyingly true as many of us said at the time. The fee we got for Brooks considering he had just signed a new 3 year contract was a pittance to what he will go on to be worth. He has probably already doubled that value in 5 months.

By playing in the premier league though. If we'd have kept him another year in the Championship his value wouldn't have increased dramatically (unless we'd gone up with him, and if we had we'd have kept him anyway you'd imagine).

You are probably correct, but it would not have doubled if he'd remained with us in the Championship for 5 months. Loved watching him play and wish him every success. Hope we have a good sell on clause.

Him and Calvert-Lewin.

Bizarre isn’t it?

Legitimately not good enough to nail down a spot in our XI yet now doing nicely at the top table.

Any talk of Howe unearthing him is nonsense of course. We simply didn’t have the platform for him to gain more financial value. Plus he’s still not as good as Duffy in that role.

Brooks is better off at Bournemouth . We got what was top end money for him as he is still unproven . Bournemouth are playing well and he's looking g[good like he did when we were playing well. It he looked very average when we weren't at our best. He sti) cannot lift games on his own
Hence the fee was good for both parties

Can only be good for us. The better that Maguire, Brooks, Walker et al. do, the better our reputation becomes. That will lead to more top quality players joining our set up, and higher fees for them if/when they leave (and if they are world class, they will leave eventually).

It's all hindsight. DB did show promise (I said to a mate that he was 'one of those rare players who could get you out of your seat') but had suffered a debilitating (and possibly returnable) illness. He wasn't a 'game changer', in fact in his one season with us - 2017-18 - he started 9 games, was substituted five times, came on as sub. 21 times and scored three goals. I'd say 'rising to £12m' looked a good deal where - as far as we're aware - no other offers were on the table. Talk of 'keeping him' doesn't take into consideration us having another good season, the return of his illness, possible other long-term injury etc.

Brooks - like Maguire, Calvert-Lewin and Kyle Walker - were more or less bound to improve when surrounded by far better players at a higher level (although Jamie Murphy didn't). We've been privileged to have seen these players in a United shirt.

Don't you think Wilder wanted to keep him he knew .he was a great player in the making ,unfortunately as soon as he changed his agent Wilder knew we would lose him.It was just a matter of getting the best deal possible . Bournemouth was our best chance as Brooke's will out grow them and will move again for big money .We will have a good sell on clause in the contract.
Wilder hoped we could keep him ( as he said ) unfortunately he wanted to go so we toothed best price available.

I know it's not hugely different but it would be nice if the author has got his facts straight.

Brooks' initial fee was £11.5m with add-ons taking that towards £15m. There's also the small matter of a hefty sell on clause so if he continues to perform it's highly likely that we'll get north of £20m for him.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Welsh have some superb footballers at present who would walk into the England side. Could you imagine the England team with the likes of Brooks, Bale & Ramsay in it? IMO, the Welsh will qualify for more & more tournaments in the coming years & as a nation, will begin to compete at the top level soon.

Don't forget Woodburn

The kid obviously has talent. For whatever reason it's not happening for him here. Be it our system (which is very unique), an attitude problem or whether Wilder just doesn't rate him. Who knows. There's a reason why Klopp & Liverpool rate him as highly as they do. Whether or not he lives up to expectations is entirely up to him, but I'm certainly not writing him off from becoming an excellent footballer just yet.

Edit: If I remember rightly, Brooks was given his first start against the Oinks last season (we all know how that one went!). Would be a very Wilder move to throw him in the side & test his resolve in the same game. Brooks showed that he has the bottle to perform in the big games. Would be interesting to see how Woodburn would do if put in the same position.

Don’t you reckon? Norwich didn’t do too badly out of the Maddison deal, £10m more than Brooks he cost didn’t he?

Woodburn? It’d be a very un-Wilder move. As things stand I don’t think he makes the 18

Brooks stays with us, he's our star attacker, we're top of the Championship - he's this seasons Ryan Sessegnon and his value far exceeds £11m and we have a much better chance of being promoted.

I stand by my comment - it was a year too soon!!!

Sessegnon is 3 years younger and played most of last season, he's also a wing back.

I think we might be top of the championship without Brooks as well.

Difference is that Brooks moved to Sheffield a few years before he broke into the first team after his performances in the Toulon tourno. Consequently he was settled. Also remember that Brooks hasd already been released from Citeh so he knew the way the game could not be all a bed of roses.

Woodburn is 18 and it's the first time he's been away from his Liverpool home. He has spent all his formative years being told he is a star of their academy and feeling part of an environment he felt most at home in. Now he has come away from home and needs to show he can be strong of mind and character where everything is unfamiliar to him. He has undoubted talents but these will only show if he has the balls to block everything else out and grow as an individual.

I don't expect that Wilder will throw him into the derby at all. The lad's just not ready for it. His time will come - but it won't be 9th November 2018.

Good article. It does read a bit as though Howe had Wilder's pants down but as others have said the fee for a largely unknown, want-away Championship player was decent. Bournemouth is a much bigger fish than Sheffield United currently and good luck to him.
