As I get giddy with Blades related stuff swirling around my brain this morning I have to give myself a little pinch to remember just how astonishing our current position and play are. Last night’s team:

Hendo – Loan
Bash – Free
Egan - £4M
O’Connell - £550,000?
Freeman – Indeed Free
Stevens – Free
Norwood - £2M
Fleck – Free
Duffy – Free
Sharp - £500,000
McGoldrick – Free
Coutts – Free
Washington - Free
Clarke - £200,000?

To put that in context the club has put that team together for roughly as much as Blackburn are dropping on Brereton and a very small fraction of the amount some of our rivals have splashed. Genius at work, thank you Sir Chris; (with a nod to Clough for Bash and Freeman and even a thank you to Atkins for, by an absolute mile, the best thing he ever did for our club in signing Billy).

that’s pretty astonishing.. reminds me of clough senior does our Chris

Christ I forgot it was Clough who signed Coutts..

Bloody Hell I hadn't seen SE1's post - great minds think alike eh?

It's probably unfair to single out one person for this praise.

The management team appears all switched on to what is needed.

Would like to know who's decision it was to bring in McGoldrick and Norwood - 2 excellent pieces of a jigsaw that have lifted the entire team to a new level going forward. We are quality in and around the oppositions box these days.

UTB

I thought the other day that Norwood is arguably the signing of the last 5 years, but then to think of all of those freebies in the team, wow!!

It's fine to give a nod to Clough for Coutts, Freeman and Basham, but to be fair to CW and the staff, none of those players were really pulling up any trees until our promotion season. In Coutts case, we'd perhaps seen glimpses of skill but the overwhelming opinion was a player who seemed disinterested and didn't work hard enough. Freeman had been in and out of the side and deemed not trustworthy as an out and out right back in a 4-4-2. I don't think anyone really knew what Basham's role was, least of all the player himself until Wilder came in. He's been a revelation since. So although they may have been signed by others, I still think huge credit should go to Wilder and the staff for working with the players to get the best out of them.

I noticed on two other threads, people (probably tongue-in-cheek to be fair) asking what Duffy had been doing in his early career floundering in the lower leagues. The point is of course that he was supposedly a winger, with not much pace. He's now been playing in a role for us that absolutely makes the most of his strengths and is therefore a much better player for it.

I bet if you asked any of these players (and probably a few more in the squad) they would tell you they are playing the best football they've played in their whole careers, and that is down to the management team for recognising and playing to their strengths.

Was great to hear the Chrissy Wilder and Alan Knill song last night. Have we ever sung about a manager and his assistant before ?

We all recognise the past 2 & a bit seasons is down to their partnership and the hard work that goes in day in day out. They make players better regardless of age and build momentum wherever they go very few managers & assistants are capable of doing that consistently.

Don't know whether this is a 'whoosh' moment, or maybe you are too young to remember.
Harry Haslam and Danny Begarra.
And my fucking eyes are bleeding now I've had to type that!!

Brilliant work from a great management team and the BEST thing about this team is there is no Billy Big Times . From day one we became a very honest team and don’t revert to shitty tactics like rolling around , going down easily to gain penalties and faining injuries or try to get opposing players carded . It must go noticed by the Refs that if you get a United match you won’t be up against cheats and make their jobs a bit easier, because Refs must talk to each other at meetings . Cannot think of one of our players with a tag for been a diver / cheat unlike the one at S6 who as they say never gets owt from the Refs . Great work by the whole SUFC staff . Proud to be a BLADE
