Coutts

I think Wilder should make the unusual step of announcing he will be playing on saturday. Surely it will put another 500 / 1000 on the gate if he’s playing.

Had one excellent interchange of passes with Norwood, too, which was good to see. Can imagine the midfield three that finished tonight being a great option when we're ahead and trying to see out a game.

The Drs decide how many minutes he can play but if he can only play for 30 mins second half that's no problem. We except the medics instructions.

Few cameo sub appearances from now on, keep Norwood on his toes.
But the three of them together gives us a different option against certain sides or when Duffy isn’t really impacting on the game (as he didn’t do tonight like he can)

Loved that he’s back, loved the reception he got as he came in, but loved even more that his touch and class were still there for all to see. (Wanted him to get the armband when Sharp went off though)
I can see the holy trinity being a joy to watch as we move forward.

If this performance alone doesn’t put at least an extra 1000 on the gate........... then we don’t deserve such a quality team.

It’s great for everyone involved with the club that our best player can be eased back in. We’ve been winning without him so it can take all the time he needs.

Imagine if we’d been struggling and desperate to rush him back in. Another reason to be very happy about our form.

Naaaa same team Saturday, Duff was great and so was Fleck and the 15 minute camio from Coutts.... knowing CW Coutts will get his chance.

It was great to see him back on the pitch and he got a great reception from the corpses in the away end, to quote Ricky

Coutts now has four chants, he’s that good.

Joking aside, he came on and looked good. Made an excellent pass down the right towards the end of the game into space, but in to a dangerous area that Blackburn found hard to defend against.

It’s exciting now to think of the options we have in midfield.

Question for anyone who went last night, what roles/positions did Coutts, Norwood and Fleck take up when on the pitch together?

In the second half Blackburn had a fair amount of possession prior to our first goal. During this we went to a flat 3 in midfield of Duffy, Norwood and Fleck.

When Couttsy came on it was much of the same, with him in the centre of the 3 and Norwood on the right.

I have to say, when Wilder shoved Coutts infront of the blades fans, he looked incredibly emotional at the end. Great to see him back.

It looked to me like Coutts pushed on a bit more got himself down the right a couple of times. With those 3 it is some midfield. Where we might lose a bit as Duffy looks to take a man on, any striker in front of that 3 just needs good movement and they’ll get picked out !

Might be wrong here but about 5 mins before we scored Basham moved into midfield, looked more like 4-4-2.
433, Duffy on right mcg on left, that's why sharp scored from his cross on the left, then we went back to 352/532

Aside from Coutts’ injury, the fact that he and Fleck haven’t had a Scotland call up is mind boggling. Not a chance that their current selections are better than those two, not even if you stretch the boundaries of opinion.

Their present and previous managers should take up another profession because they certainly know nothing about football.

Except for the first goal. Not that thats got anything to do with it.

No need to be precious, two other players had the ball after Duffy for the first goal. He received the ball after we broke their play and did well to nutmeg the defender and get the ball to Fleck.
Duffy wasn’t at his best, didnt look as sharp and lots of things didn’t come off for him.
He was still good, just not at his most productive. Maybe Blackburn made a plan for him specifically?

My point remains, when we need to change tactic we have some useful options depending what’s required and the players we are up against.
If we need a bit more bite, ferocity and destruction you put Bash in midfield. More craft and care on the ball unleash the holy trinity!!

Indeed Blackburn tried to keep Fleck,Duffy, and more specifically Norwood quiet in the first half with a high press. We ended up kicking it long a number of times. The first goal opened the floodgates for our system to work as intended.

To be fair-ish to McLeish the Dinosaur, his midfield is the only bit of the team where he has some decent players and can pick 5 Premier League players.

Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), James Forrest (Celtic), Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth), Kevin McDonald (Fulham), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Scott McTominay (Manchester United), Robert Snodgrass (West Ham United).

I'm happy Fleck and Coutts don't get picked in the same way that I'm happy SUFC are still a bit of a surprise package. The media numpties go for the easy pick's of FL'sDC, Boro, West Brom, Forrest, DirtyLeeds etc. We can just carry on going about our own business in relative obscurity.

the 5 mins of football we played leading up to the 2nd was brilliant and a joy to watch - Coutts being a part of this was lovely to see again

the Evans / Lundstram midfield seems a long time ago now !

Coutts has had some bad injuries down the years but at times when he wasn’t enjoying football so there was no ‘best’ to get back to. The guy could not have worked harder to come back this time and I think he might be even better than he was pre injury and looking forward to the first drop of his shoulder on Saturday at some point :)

I’m happy for them not to get picked as well, it just makes no sense.

From that list only 3 (4 at a push) are naturally central players. None of which I would rate higher than our two.

The question is whether either could play in the premier league.
For me, it’s a definite yes assuming Coutts can return to his pre leg break form.

What’s obvious from that list is that there are no players in it better than Fleck IMHO, but what’s also not being picked up on is that our two play together week in week out, and surely that is a better option than plucking guys who train together 3 weeks a year!
