Just out of interest, I wonder how hard it would have been for someone to notify the aforementioned students that Sheffield United would be at home at 3pm yesterday, and to try and avoid yesterday afternoon as a moving in day.

Having slept on it, I put the blame more at United's door than our inept council. The 2 Uni's can hardly change their terms and that fact that three and a half billion new flats have been built around Shoreham St/ London Road / Bramall Lane should hardly come as a surprise to anybody.

Many of the students are coming long distances and if they have parent(s) who work in the week, they will obviously be arriving between 10 - 3 at the weekend. We could have made our game 17.30 Saturday, or even better Friday night.

The club knew what was happening as the same thing happened with Norwich last year and even CW mentioned it, with his pop at their coach driver.

I'm always happy to knock our piss poor small time council but where were SYP's traffic controllers in all this and why didn't SUFC recognise they could have avoided all this themselves, by changing the kick off.

We walked down as usual from Norton Lees.
Had lots of fun after the game waiting for my youngest Pokemonning (or summat) in Lowfield Park. We were stood at the junction of Queens Road and Myrtle Road marvelling at the variety of expletives being levelled at the absolute spacktards that don't know what a yellow box junction is. At one point we watched the lights go through 4 changes and nothing could move because of morons sat in the yellow box.

On Satdi we did Chesterfield to Heeley in 15 mins then walk for 15 mins to the ground, same in reverse. No probs.
Really problem nowadays is many who could walk have forgotten how to and expect all others like themselves to get out of the way.
Kick off times other than 3 pm are a big problem for distant blades and knocks a few off the attendance so no thanks.

Because SUFC are not the social guardians around here, the council and SYP are.

What struck me was the absence of traffic cops. It was chaos at every junction. At the same time we had the usual contingent of coppers dressed in riot gear dossing around in vans just around the corner. I'm sure they would have welcomed the chance to stretch their legs and do something useful for a change.

Cardiff, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Aston, Leeds, Nottingham, Reading, Sheffield, Oxford, all places with significant universities or 2 universities that hosted games on Saturday at 3,00pm.

I wonder what the fixture computer would have made of trying to get all that lot playing away in non university cities on Saturday?

When I got back to Leeds the inner road was busy but the taxi driver told me that it was pretty much business as usual during the day.

It seems to be a problem that was peculiar to Sheffield and whilst the location of BDTBL is definitely a factor it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to manage it better than was the case on Saturday.

The local infrastructure (roads) are already overcrowded so given we have months of advance notice it is stupid to try and 'cope' when the problem can be avoided. I'm the first to moan when Sky move kick offs around for their convenience, but here was a genuine well flagged up event that anyone could see would cause congestion.

How exactly should the authorites 'manage' it?
Flying cars?
Temporary roads in the sky?
Star Trek style teleporting?

A valid point except that in the case of Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Reading and Oxford, the Universtities are nowhere near the football ground. Villa and Aston Uni are 2 miles apart but the football ground is closer to the M6 so traffic leaves the multilane expressway well before the city centre.

DirtyLeeds ground is only a mile or so apart from Leeds Uni, but they have a dual carraigeway ring road and a direct link to the M602 avoiding the same roads.

Only Nottingham of the grounds you mention is really comparable with the Lane, in being less than a mile from the city centre. In their case the grounds (County and Forrest) are the other side of the city to the Uni's.

I can't speak for Cardiff.

The basic facts of the matter are that zero provision was made by either of them to accommodate the extra traffic, and that secondly, it's not up to SUFC to make arrangements for the students and to make concessions affecting their business on their behalf.
