Sheffield United Women

An acquaintance of mines daughter plays for them but I know nothing about them except for looking at the results
 
Took my 8 year old up last yeare to shirecliff and enjoyed it.

Moving games out to stocksbridge alienates the ones who live in South sheffield.

Won't be trecking up there.
 
Signed players from already established teams, some of which are local. Shouldn’t do badly
 
Went to see them Saturday. Some decent individual moments but don't look to have gelled as a team yet, gave away possession too easily (the captain said as much in her interview). Probably did enough to equalise in the second half but missed a sitter.
The opposition were a big strong team and United struggled with that for a start in my opinion.
Main reason I went is to see if my 7 year old girl would enjoy it and thankfully she did.
They play up at Stocksbridge again on Sunday in the cup Vs Birmingham.
They also have to play Man United women who beat Villa 0-12 at the weekend.

Thanks for the update, the club has put a lot of effort into getting this going but seems like they have a long way to go.

He managed Sheffield FC a year or so ago.
Carla Ward brought him in as her assistant, Carla was fucking brilliant as a Sheffield FC striker for several years until last year.
Sheffield FC were way ahead of the Blades women until recently.
Financial constraints meant Sheffield had to resign from the FAWSL, Blades women have gone instead.
Ellie Gilliatt was a great wing back at Sheffield, now a Blade.
The level of sheer ignorance about the women's game is fucking phenomenal.

You just have to remember that there are some EXTREMELY sad and inadequate tossers on here who ceased to evolve in the 70s and still think Jim Davidson was funny, then it doesn't bother you. ;)

I was there on Saturday, sat just along from Neil Redfearn who now manages Liverpool Ladies and was making copious notes throughout. It wasn't a great game, but with 17 new signings this summer they will take time to gel.

By the way, they won't be playing at Stocksbridge permanently. Park Steels are just doing the club a favour until the new ground is ready.

I echo the comments on Ellie Gilliatt, she's been quality for a few years. I think she turned down a professional contract with, possibly, Man City a few years ago, good to see that she has kicked on in the way she has.

Agree. I don't know if people are aware, but the women's game at the top level is currently suffering from West Scam in the same way that the man's game has been since at least 1966. When the new top league was set up this year, several teams, including Donny Belles and Sheffield United, were disbarred from joining, and/or relegated from the top league, supposedly on money grounds. West Scam were allowed to join the league, despite being 2 or 3 leagues below the top. You may not be keen on women's football, but you couldn't make this up, and it stinks!
 
Didn't know about the Wet Sham thing - it was a bit worse than that.

Man City wanted to enter the top women's league and they announced just before the season started that they would replace the Belles the next season come what may - so Doncaster had to play the whole season in the knowledge that it didn't make a ha'peth of difference what points they got or if they won the league even, they were going to be relegated .... did wonders for the clubs morale that did.

If some people get that way we'd end up with the same in the mens game... Rangers and Celtic in the Prem and some clubs kicked out for finishing 16th (unless it happened to be West Ham, can't hurt their fans).

Living on the other side of town, I can cross the Pennines quicker than reaching Stocksbridge. :)

Olympic Legacy Park, out Don Valley way. Some home games will be at the Lane as well, I believe.
 
Anyone knocking should seriously go and have a watch. My Mrs played for them over the last few years and even at level 3/4 that United have been in before this season it's a really decent watch. And they can play!

I also think it's brilliant the lengths the club has gone to make this happen, if we want to be a family club that we are, having boys and girls dream of playing for United is a must.
 
Just came across the score from yesterday, we lost 2-0 to Birmingham females.

This bit from the match report sums up women's football:

'Shortly after coming on the pitch, the midfielder spotted Hobbs off her line and lofted a brilliant effort from the centre circle into the back of the net.'

Written like it's a relatively normal occurrence.

How can this be? Surely it's not a case of just because the parent club is big in the prem then it automatically entitles their womens team (no matter how bad) an automatic right to the top league at the expense of another team? Surely, and it seems only fair, that the team finishing bottom of the league should have been the one to make way for Man City, and even then it should only be if they have progressed up the leagues (just like the mens football league). What gave them the right to dictate to the Belles that they would replace them in the top league? Seems totally unfair and corrupt!
