Someone asked about the route the German aircraft took it must be along the East coast then to Sheffied as Ryan Air fly today and not having to get passed the heavy defences of the South East. Once a bomb hit the Golf course in Retford which is East of Sheffield, they always said it was dropped from a damaged Aircraft trying to shed weight.

Cue all the bunker jokes....

its because they are so scared stiff of solicitors I'm afraid. There was a little triangular traffic island coming up to a roundabout in Donny nudged about a foot one way ... at what cost? I suppose they had to move it to adhere strictly to the regulations when another part of the junction was changed but in reality it was just a waste of money. I remember seeing some stupid bike lanes drawn on a plan for an office park, the sort of cycle paths that go onto a pavement with a give way sign when it comes back onto the carriageway .... I pointed out (as a cyclist) that no-one in their right minds would use it .... as indeed they wont ..... and the traffic consultants knew that as well, but it's just part of the game of not getting sued if someone falls off.

New junctions seem to attract forests of traffic lights now ..... how much does it cost to erect one pole with traffic lights on it???? there are always 3 or four duplicates ... (£40K ?) ..... only there because if they weren't, the council would be sued - contrast that with French traffic lights, where instead of having a duplicate set on t'other side of a junction just so the first car driver can see it, they put a mini red, amber, green set halfway down the pole so he can. That would save the cost of a new pole, connection, big set of lights and the foundations etc. but no one at a local authority would ever have the drive to try to campaign to change the regs.

A related subject shows how little British citizens are trusted by our authorities compared with drivers from some other happier nations ...

Americans can always turn right at a set of lights even against a red, if it's safe ..... how often are we frustrated by not being able to turn left at junction despite there being no possibility of a crash?

French lights are turned off and left flashing amber all night after a certain hour when the roads are quiet - they leave it up to the driver to make his own decision and credit him with a bit of common sense .....

By way of contrast the authorities in Blighty don't even trust us to vote sensibly in a referendum :)

Just want to dig this post up, Vorpal. I share your disgust and frustration at councils and the way they waste money, but it is completely wrong to think that everything is done so much better abroad. It's the British way, I'm afraid, but it's not true.
I don't want to hijack this thread or take it off at a tangent, so I'm not going to say anything more, but living in a foreign country you see the shit that goes on and although the good points and bad points can be different, it's not as good as it looks on the surface. (Speaking chiefly about Germany, of course).

People are still people wherever you go in the world :)

I know Hamburg, but I think I've told you before.

I go to Hamburg quite often and it makes me upset. That a German city can look and feel as great as this while English equivalents pale by comparison. I agree, it's about look and feel but then I'm an architect.

There isn't a British city that appears to be thriving like Hamburg is there? ( oh sorry, there is one, London)

Are you suggesting that federal governments in Germany aren't better organised than their British counterparts ? They clearly have more money to play with, I'll grant you that....

If you really want to discuss this, start another thread, I don't want to take this one off at a tangent. You've moved the goalposts from local councils making an expensive mess of road layouts, presumably as an example of council incompetence, to Hamburg "thriving", which is not necessarily to do with the council anyway. OK I said I wasn't going to say any more on this thread, so that's me out.

I found this real old photo of Chris Wilder earlier, goes back to the creation of time.

2.45 kick off because according to Bert's memory Wednesday we're also at home and they kicked off at 3.15.
Was that the day the pigs lost to Scunthorpe? In those days plod could police two games in the city being played at the same time.

Did we also have early kickoffs in the 1970s because of the power strikes (ie no floodlights).?
1972, United 3 West Ham 0 was a midweek afternoon kick off due to power cuts. Bert managed to get there. Dearden got all 3.
23,000 crowd Bert's memory recalls.

And v Derby in Nov 1973 was a 2pm kick off (Saturday), v Wolves in February 1974 and v Ipswich in March 74 were midweek afternoon kick offs

No, we played Derby in the next round and got stuffed. Just as we were trying the leave the ground the score came up on the scoreboard that Wednesday had been beaten at home by fourth Division Scunthorpe, it brightened the day slightly.

Did anyone else here old enough to remember enjoy the power-cuts, I did, coal fire, candles & a decent excuse not to do any homework?
Me! They were a great excuse to skip homework. We either had the coal fire on or a paraffin heater...an Aladdin just like one of these badboys. I used to get the paraffin from the coin-op machine at the petrol station that was on the corner of Hill Street and London Road.
