Looking at these old pictures from the games, is anyone able to pinpoint when goalkeepers started to wear gloves?

Len Badger wore the number 8 shirt in September and October 1972, playing in midfield, because Steve Goulding had claimed the number 2 shirt when Badger got injured pre-season and was unavailable for the first few games of the 1972/73 season

It was a long process. As long as I can remember (1950s), goalkeepers used to keep with their bare hands in dry weather, and used gloves in wet weather, and generally did not like wearing them, preferring to have the direct contact with ball, and thus a feel for it. As a kid playing in goal, the gloves were any old winter woollen gloves, and were pretty useless. Around 1960 (my under-13s year) I got as a present new high-tech gloves, which were basically a stringy material with ping-pong bat type rubber on the front of fingers and thumbs. I think I had about 3 pairs for my entire school career, and probably another 2 in adult life. I always preferred bare hands if the weather allowed.
British goalkeepers did not use gloves routinely until several decades later. I don't know who the first United keeper to wear gloves regularly was. The Kelly/Tracy era, perhaps? The marketing value of gloves will no doubt ensure that no keepers revert to bare hands. My grandson had got through about 4 pairs by the age of 10.

Having been so critical of your City, I thought I'd better contribute and old map, if not an old photo! I think this is from about 1890 to 1900 .... look at all the markets, linked straight into the railway yard bringing in the livestock. See also how continuous the buildings and streets are straight across the valley and up the hill to the right up Hyde Park .... the map now will have gashes straight through it breaking the roads and connexions between this area and the commercial centre of town .....THAT is the result of bad planning or at least planning predicated on nothing more than long distance road links. And German bombing ........I was wondering which caused most harm?

FFS - I am in that picture, but hidden by an elbow above the G in Pagets!

Only stood there as I had my 13 year old cousin who was an Everton fan with me.

Jeez - remember that game like it was yesterday - we were top of D2, Everton top of D1 from memory.

I wasnt at the match but after watching the highlights on YTV in the next day started my love affair with the Blades, became a Lane regular from the next home game (v Preston)

Not surprised - we played some nice stuff around that time.

Again from memory, I believe Woody crossed for both goals.
