RIP Geoff Goodall

Mick Speight looks a mean bugger, my next door neighbour in those days was a midfielder at the lane (Richard Harwood) and he told me how Mick throttled him in training, I forgot why, possibly slacking, and 2 doors down from me was Albert Broadbent ex Wednesday keeper who used to wait at the window to give me the thumbs down if we lost (quite irritating) but he was an ok bloke, with people passing like Geoff has it gives us all a chance for folk to reminisce about days gone by. Utb
Broadbent was a left winger

Is that player Steve Goulding?

And is that Stewart Scullion next to TC?

(He was a good player that Stewart Scullion). Don’t often hear fans talking about him. But he was a very talented lad.

Yes, Scullion is next to TC. LSF has identified Lea Brooks who is between Speight and Dearden

Alan Ogden?

Alan Ogden, that’s a bit left field. Wasn’t aware he ever played for us ? Barnsley Boys player in 1960 when their team won the English Shield and Cup. Although Silent will come along and tell me I’m wrong as I often am.

Think he went to Man City ?

RIP Geoff

I recognised Addison and Ford but didn’t get Frank Barlow.

Did Field come a bit later ? Scored a wonderful goal against Ipswich in a 7-0 rout

Came from Watford. Watford was like a feeder club for us in those days. He played against us in our last game before promotion in 1971.

You’re right he gets forgotten. Great player.

Played in the same Watford team with future Blades, Terry Garbett and Keith Eddy

I'll save Silent the trouble.
You're thinking of Alan Ogley the keeper who indeed did play for Barnsley Boys and went to Man City, never played for Blades.
Alan Ogden was a left back who played for Rotherham Boys, not as old as Ogley. Made a few first team appearances for us.

What was I thinking of. Alan Ogley of course, misread the post

yep I was at that last game v Watford. We won 3-0 and I went on the pitch with my penknife and cut a piece of the hallowed turf to take home with me!

I was also there but didn’t vandalise the place :). Did you get the song sheet per-match that John Harris had, allegedly, put together ?

No, I don't recall anything about that. I know Harris was a lay-preacher, but I didn't know he'd done a hymn-sheet, or song sheet per match.

I remember a programme from that season where they'd had a competition I think for a new song and "We ain't got a barrel of money" was featured in it. That's when we started singing it, 1970 I think it was.

Should read « pre-match » against Watford. A cheesy number that included all the players names to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory . Eg first line « we’ve got Hope and Currie.,.. » etc. I can’t bet the only one that remembers it ? Surely :(

I do remember that, but I can’t remember the words. I don’t think I ever invented a dance routine to go with it either. That was a girls’ thing back in the day. Buying Pop magazine to get the words to songs in the charts and then inventing a dance to go with it.:)

(It was harmless fun. A bit like “fingering” - that’s another thing that’s gone out of fashion!)

Errr.....yes

RIP Geoff.
Played golf with Geoff and his lad Rob (also a wendy) for many years up at Hallowes GC. What a lovely modest bloke, he didn't say much about it but would tell me few great stories every now and then about his time at the lane. He was a decent golfer too.

Unfortunately Cahill, you aren't...
We've got Hope and Currie
Gil Reece on the wing
Dearden in the centre
And Hockey is our King
Higher still and higber
Onward to the top
We'll never surrender
On our red and white kop

(The last two lines may well be a figment of my imagination :) )

It may well have had another verse or two?
Anyone? Silent?

I do remember the words LSF. Your last three lines should be , « will our goals be set, Harris who made us MIIIIIIGHTY, will make us mightier yet «

How/why in Gods name do i remember that ????

It was on a sheet of paper handed out at the turnstile.

Nice one Cahill :)
Thought I'd made last bit up!
Don't tell me you still have the sheet of paper too!? :)

I’ll have a look round. I was going to say « I’ll have a scout round » but that may be too risque for a family forum

I’m just amazed that I can remember it after decades of alcohol abuse and consequent cognitive decline
