This must be at the forefront of every chuffs thoughts,Coutts makes the bench today which was a surprise.

Now the team selection today was spot on and the result even better.

If Coutts was fit and ready as the day he played at Burton, who in the current team (that played today) would you drop to make way for him.

I am scratching my head and thinking i could not put him in,not on the teams first half performance, individually they were all 10/10,thats Duffy Fleck Norwood.

I bet Wilder is relishing having that headache.

Duffy generally plays an hour to 70 mins.. break Coutts in gently from that point.

At the moment Norwood is Coutts... but better.

That midfield isn't shifting for the time time being but I expect the long term plan is to have Fleck, Norwood and Coutts on the field as much as possible. But for now Duffy has to start and I don't see us going with one striker now that we have reinforced.

We do suddenly have a very healthy squad though, perhaps a little too big for now but over the season it will be needed. With every one fit and if we go with today's starting 11, we have the following to choose as subs:

Moore
Eastwood
Wright
Stearman
Baldock
Cranie
Norrington-Davies
Lafferty
Bryan
Johnson
Lunsdtram
Coutts
Woodburn
Clarke
Washington

Going to be a few disappointed players most match days.

From years of watching Utd our midfield has always been average to dismal at best.
We have one now that Coutts should've been able too walk back in to.......

Great to see that we are building a strong squad where the players will have to convince CW that they deserve to wear the shirt for the next match. Strong competition for places can only have a positive effect on performances and motivate the players to be the best they can be.

Let's get 4-1 up in every game and give Coutts 5 minutes at the end for a few games
Then 10 minutes for a few
Then 15 minutes for a few
Until he's fit enough to claim his place back when somebody's form dips.

If only we won ever game 4-1!

Btw, Coutts has been playing behind closed doors friendlies. First 30 mins, then 60, then 90.

You still only have a 3 in midfield and you have avoided the question.

Coutts, Fleck & the 2nd coming as a flat 3, with Duffy in the hole behind a lone striker.

Or on what we witnessed today, Coutts. Tonight he must feel like the faithful greying family chocolate Labrador, having witnessed a puppy being brought home on Xmas day. :)

Plenty of games to go, we'll get knocks and injuries, loss of form, games which demand a different set up.

We're strong in midfield now. Fantastic to see

What would you do for the next game at Bristol,if like i said in my op Coutts was as fit and ready as the last game he played at Burton.

Would you drop any of the current three to accomodate Coutts.

For me i cant give an answer.

Wilder KEEPS telling everyone what he is going to do.

He has players now to pick differing formations for specific games and during games.

We changed to 4 at the back during the last minutes of Villa game - this is his aim.

We now have a serious squad which of course includes core players, but has the ability to switch when needed.

WHO in the ground wold have picked Lafferty to come on yesterday? Expect more of this type of thing from United's management team. I thought Fleck was possibly injured yesterday, perhaps it was a tweak - perhaps not, probably it was tactics to see the game out

Jos over at S6 said so much last season, that he wanted to do the same - the transfer embargo has stopped him a bit, but it appears as though modern football tactics is going this way.

Won't be a surprise if you see players not playing 46 games, but a core number only playing between 35-40.

Remember what CW said after the away game at Hull last season - we were running on empty - wasn't that February time? The squad he has now will be to try and negate fatigue with core players and manage them through to season end - and then the possibility of 3 extra games if needed.

As for who will be left out as per the opening post - I expect Coutts, Fleck and Norwood to play in the same team. Go and look how Fulham played last season.

Macdonald deep (Coutts), with Norwood (Norwood) right and Cairney (Fleck) left playing in front, but with no no:10. It's just another option we can now employ

Coutts wouldn't start the next game for me. I think we're looking at mid to late October before he's starting games. Wilder doesn't tend to start players if he thinks that they can't finish the game. So Coutts wouldn't be a starter.

I'd have to see more about Bristol City before i decided, but looking at their form, they don't look a side to be feared, plus we'll have had a rest with the internationals, though Stevens and Norwood are away on duty.

So if we come back with a clean bill of health its Fleck, Norwood and Duffy to start down there.

If we need to change it then we have Basham and Lundstram to come in and shore things up, with Stearman slotting in at the back.

At the moment as much as I love him, he wouldn't get in, yes he is Paul coutts, yes he is a fantastic mid, but he will have to earn his spot just like anyone else, he will have to wait for a dip in form, or god forbid an injury, but for now even fully fit he doesn't start

Swiss you missed the point again>>>>>>>>>>>>>if Coutts was as fit and ready as the last game he played at Burton.

I’ve never rated Coutts as highly as many blades, so this 3 would play even if Coutts hasn’t got injured.

I saw it, but i didn't see but he's not going to be in that shape v Bristol.

However, to answer the question in a round about way. If he gets himself back to fitness through playing longer, i think the two automatic choices will be Fleck and Norwood.

Then its Coutts or Duffy.

My guess though, by the time that Coutts is up to 100% for 90 mins (Burton), probably around Christmas, then the timing will be right for a rotation anyway as Fleck will have played a lot of games, as will Norwood
