Duffy, Sharp and Wilder

I’m quite surprised we’ve got to 8 pages without someone pulling Mrs Duffy up on her incorrect usage of your instead if you’re!

Worth a fine of a week’s wages on its own!

Ah, a story of footballer's other halves taking to social media and having a little dig, which upsets some fans and creates a modicum of mock outrage amongst a few. The ephemeral power of these magical, mystical women is so upsetting.
Is it just a simple tale of WAGs to witches?

So no dressing room split, no problems with morale, all hunky dory?
Not that I’ve seen. The assertion was that the tweets are damaging the club, I couldn’t/can’t see why. Is it much different to fans saying Duffy/Sharp should play, in the grand scheme of things?

Of course it can be damaging! Fergie, Clough, Shankly and Stein wouldn't stand for this.

Yet when Wit comments Wilder should shut him up?

Talk of a dressing room split may or may not be true. However, if Billy can't get in the team after the last two abysmal performances then its a fair bet somethings going on. One thing to consider though, if Billy is in the middle of it and Wilder has decided to isolate him, then Wilder's not only going to get the rest of the team against him but also the fans. Billy is the senior pro, leading goalscorer in recent history and the clubs talisman. If he's being victimised by the manager then the rest of the team aren't going to be impressed and neither are the fans. If Billy is guilty of some shenanigans then fair enough but then you would have thought Wilder would have jettisoned him and given the reasons why.

One rumour was that we'd accepted on offer but he wouldn't go. Don't think he even discussed terms.

Victimised though? So snowflake

I understand sharp not playing as just don’t think he’s good enough at this level. However the Duffy one is crackers he’s our most creative player and needs to be on the pitch
Oh....I thought was one of the top scorers in the championship last year
even though he missed a few games.

If that's true then its Billy's prerogative and if Wilder's got the hump because of it then it's he who is the snowflake.

Of course it is. I didn't say otherwise.

Victimised though, come on Snooty that's overegging the pudding. Especially when no one knows what's happened.

Yeah but in the present circumstances where we are performing so poorly and he can't get a start then as I pointed out, it's a reasonable assumption amongst the rumours that there has been a bust up or something. Victimised, frozen out, sidelined, call it what you want, it all adds up to the same thing - he aint playing.

Chris has always wanted to start with 11 who can do 90 minutes. As it isn't good having to use your subs if so & so can only do 60 mins etc. Then if get injuries there's no subs! At the end of last season he said next season.....now .....he would only start with players who tell him they can do 90 mins. Exceptions being players coming back from bad injury who need easing in. So I presumed this is what he is doing & if so I understand what he's doing. All this ageism....how old was Bob Hatton when he played virtually every game for Harry Haslam? 36 or 37 ? He was fit & kept going. A player I admired.

All very well and good if you have a team of players that can play 90 minutes over a 46 game period. We haven't the players were out on their legs after 75 minutes for the second half of last season thats why we conceded so many late goals. What were the reasons? who knows maybe the high intensity training throughout the season we were told about didn't help. Maybe the lack of squad depth was the killer. We've started the season like we finished it. Match sharpness could kick in after half a dozen games but you have to question why the two teams we have played have looked fitter and stronger over the 90 minutes.

You can have players running around for 90 minutes but if they don't do anything with the ball whats the point. Much better to have game changers on and get a good hour out of them thats what the majority are calling for.

Agree about age if your fit age doesn't come into it. Compare Lundstram 10 years younger than Duffy. Does he last any longer than Duffy. The evidence of the first two games say he doesn't.

Billy isn’t getting picked because the manager is going with last season’s top scorer. It’s not victimisation picking the guy who got 19 goals over the guy who got 13. Before anyone starts talking about games played, if Billy was playing well consistently then he would have got picked more. As it was, others like Brooks got the nod.

The system called for a physical presence and Billy didn’t provide that in the way Leon did.

Billy will get his chance I’m sure but wifey hitting Twitter ain’t going to chamge when that happens.

Leon's got 5 in the last 27 games. Billy's also got 5 over the same period in half the number of games.

There's a bloke who scored 5 being picked in front of him too for some reason.

Billy Sharp Stats last season:
28 starts
6 sub
13 goals
4 assists

Minutes on Pitch 2361.
Minutes per goal = 181.

Leon Clarke Stats last season:
38 starts
1 sub
19 goals
5 assists

Minutes on Pitch 3332.
Minutes per goal = 175.

So basically, they are equally as shit as each other. Clarke has a better minute/goal ratio...

HOWEVER... I will still defend Sharp over Clarke:

Sharp played in 35 games - 35 x 90 (mins) = 3060 which means he missed 700 minutes which equates to an avg of 67 mins played per game.
700 mins is 7.7 games missed by being substituted/subbed on.

Clarke played in 39 games - 39 x 90 (mins) = 3510 which means he missed 178 minutes which equates to an avg of 85 mins played per game.
178 mins is 1.9 games missed by being substituted/subbed on.

Sharp can score a lot of goals in 7 games.

Have you adjusted for not being available through injury or suspension? You can't count those as "missing" if they couldn't play.

Genuine question btw, l don't know the answer.

While goals scored is an obvious key measure for a CF, there are others.

At the end of the season I posted about a dozen key, meaningful and measurable statistics in a similar Clarke vs Sharp face off.

Leon won 1 (headers won).

The conclusion that I drew was that winning headers (which may or may not amount to anything) is much valued in these parts ;)

I think Chris wants to sell Billy because he scores a lot of goals and that makes him seem like he’s a really good player but apparently he’s not and he’s quite old and his legs have gone but not many people know that and so if they see how many goals he’s scored they might think he’s worth a lot of money and put a big offer in for him and then we will be rich and can buy another striker whose much younger than Billy with better legs and he can go straight into the first team and replace one of the 2 old crocks up front except that we won’t pay anyone higher wages than what Billy has had and even when Billy’s gone that will still be the maximum we’ll pay because it’s like a club tradition and stuff and our club motto is “don’t spunk money - spunk opportunities instead” or summat like that in Latin.

I think so too.

He's lost it already. Lost it last season with his team selections and cloudy style negative selections

Were you claiming that when you were defending him for around three months at the beginning of this year?

Or have you developed a nasty case of forum hindsight. It's very contagious :)
