Wilder interview

Looks like he was lying yet again in his interview because apparently we're signing Lee Gregory.

Sell Brooks. Sign Gregory. You couldn't make it up. That's as laughable as it gets.

Maybe Staton’s question seeded the idea in his mind...

Thanks Rob!

1 distinctly average performance, 1 poor performance and 1 post match interview and all of a sudden we're in crisis. Some of the comments on this thread about CW are pathetic and embarrassing.

We’ve had crap starts in the last two seasons under Wilder and been bottom of the table, and we ended up having outstanding and good seasons respectively. Some seem to have forgotten that fact, although it is disappointing that he’s now not going to get the quality in that we thought he would from previous interviews. Not sure that’s any fault of his though.

Leonard does get chances and will probably get them again. If I remember rightly, he played in the away win at Bristol City on the last day of last season.

As did Freeman, who is not bad at getting crosses into the box and also not bad at finding the net

Yeah he should have told the fooking world. Bring back Cluff!

No reason whatsoever he couldn't have said 'we still have bids in and we're hoping something will happen, but there are no guarantees. We still have the loan window...'

As I've said elsewhere, amazes me how little grace he seems to have earned himself with some of our more narrow minded fans.

But then he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, is he not? No doubt he would have got slated for saying something along those lines as well.

I expect it's similar to the Waghorn scenario. I never feel comfortable saying players should play for low wages when they can get higher wages somewhere else. It's a short career so who can blame them ....with their wives input....for chasing the money. Leon turned down higher wages last season out of loyalty to The Blades & Chris Wilder. But now noone has a good word to say about the lad.

Is that the same Leon Clarke who is 34 soon. Or maybe the one who we rescued from obscurity a couple of years ago. Or could it be the one who extended his contract last year and is guaranteed £10k per week until he's 36. The club owes Leon nothing, its up to him now to prove his worth.

He wouldn't have got slated for saying something completely non committal. He wouldn't have lost anything doing this. It's like he just fancied having a little tantrum and was guessing we won't be signing anybody.

The fee & the personal terms have to be thereabouts if any hope of signing top class Champ/ lower Prem team players.
It's not rocket science is it. Do you expect Stoke to be as good as Man U or Man City ? We Blades have to have realism or we will implode !
Just using your post LB to ask a question. If CW gets decent premier players in on loan, their salary won’t drop to our squad level. But the players are ok with that, because the mother club is paying most of it. But we can’t pay our own potentially incoming decent players, because it’s not good for the harmony/ moral of the group. I don’t get it. Surely Woodburn (only guessing,is on more than any of ours). Or is that the problem at the moment for the performances.

Gone from 4 bids in to can't afford anyone who will make us better.Perhaps the board has pulled the promised funds.
He would be upset and it would definitely affect his players.
Or he didn’t have them in the first place TB, at least not after Egan was brought. £4.5/ 5m for Waghorn, “but we were always going to be third in that race”, paraphrasing CW here, but that’s what he said.

The delusion comment is based upon the fact that since January CW has repeatedly said in RS interviews 'that we have not been found out'. The evidence proves to the contrary. Secondly after a pretty inept performance against Swansea he picks the same team that did so badly against them to play Middlesborough. Again in the RS he is totally happy with that when just about all the fans on here question it. He is therefore in my mind deluding himself into thinking there is no problem, when the facts suggest otherwise. Non SUFC pundits also say this.

I would not say that picking the same team against Middlesbrough as played against Swansea is evidence of delusion. If he carries on picking the same team and keeps getting poor results then you have a point, but not when he picks it for just the second time after one poor result.

I am pretty sure that under john Harris we sometimes picked the same team after a poor result. No one called him deluded.

Also, I think that you might be giving a bit too much credence to what a manager says publicly. I do not believe any manager's public comments are always a true indication of what he is really thinking or what he is saying to the players in the privacy of the dressing room.

Anyway, time will tell. I suspect that after the two performances so far Wilder will make changes for the next match. I will be surprised if he doesn't.

Who says Duffy cannot play 90 minute's, he never gets the chance,I dont see him blowing out of his arse and looking knackered , has this been said officially or are folk saying it because of his age or picking up on what someone else has said and trying to sound intelligent , also as disappointing as the line up at kick off was if coutts,Duffy and fleck had played we would probably have still been 3-0 down, I agree we lacked a lot of drive but ffs how awful was our defence at dealing with set pieces and long punts into the box,I have only seen it on Sky and there were no replays so I dont know who individually was to blame, and finally, Wilder out, really? I accept it's all about opinions but ffs keep your stupid opinions to yourself I bet if we win the next two these same prats will be singing his praises, I sometimes wish the Internet hadn't been invented then the only people you argued with were the ones who actually went to matches.
Does it matter if he can only play60/70 minutes anyway, at least 2 players get subbed, from the 65/70 minute mark anyway.

I simply cant believe we didn't have a plan B, we were linked with: Gallagher, Hogan, Waghorn, Gregory, Wells, Roofe - we ended up with McGoldrick on a free who I'm sorry looks terrible with Clarke, they both look completely off the pace.

Do you think it would have been better to tell the rest of the football world that Gregory was available for transfer?
Thanks, Loughborough ;)
Friends of sheffielder Gregory, have posted on other sites, that he’d come to us for less than what he’s on now. CW not interested apparently. The money bit I’d take with a pinch of salt anyway.

Would you rather he said "we're hoping to sign at least one more player" and then slagging him off if we didn't,
or him saying "we're not signing any more players" and then slagging him off for signing one?

"Ricky - the choice is yours"

Mate, it's a fact of being a Blade. I'd say 9 times in 10 (and that's generous), we're linked with players that will improve us, ambitious links etc, but we end up with the dregs that nobody else wants (or we'd simply get outbid).

Match fitness is a big concern. We lack sharpness and aggression. We were slow out the blocks last season as well so maybe its part of the plan to build up slowly. To be fair to Staton he did talk about desire and some players being too comfortable. That seemed to throw CW a little and he responded by saying he believed he had an honest bunch and we'd see on Saturday.
overtrained??

Well he must have been.....as he certainly said we weren't signing him and hadn't even looked at him.

No I didn't say he was deluded after just one performance, the delusion comes in because he doesn't seem to have accepted that 'we probably have been found out now' and we need to adapt around that. The finding out has been since the turn of the year if not before. Given 25+ games I would have thought it would have been sorted by now. Also CW didn't think his team selections had much to do with the results in the last two games. Opinion on here very much disagrees with that.

Quite right, not sure why I seem so surprised! ha-ha.

I'm not sure we have been "found out" or that Wilder believes that we haven't been found out regardless of what he states publicly, but if he doesn't, I don't think that is a particularly delusional view to have.

We lost a key player in November last year. Since his loss, results have not been as good. We have tried various midfield combinations to deal with that loss. None have worked as well as before that loss, but in some games we have had more success than in others. And generally we have still played quite well. There really haven't been too many poor performances, even though the results may suggest otherwise.

Last season we played 21 games after the turn of the year. W7 D7 L7 Pts 28. Those are not poor results. They aren't particularly good either. Mid table is what they are and at the start of last season most of us felt that was the most we could hope for. However for most of the first 17 games the midfield worked like a dream and we significantly outperformed our expectations. Then we lost probably the most important player in that midfield.

I think it is more down to our inability or failure (however you want to describe it) to replace Coutts that has caused us problems, rather than us being found out.

In simple terms, Coutts is a very good player and without him we aren't as good as with him.

Same as without Brown our midfield didn't work as well. Without Deane we got relegated. Without Jones we got relegated. Etc. Etc. When a club like ours loses a key player results suffer and it isn't unusual for us to take quite a while to get back on track.

The obvious question to ask him would have been
Chris , if you picked the right team initially , why did you later bring on Duffy & Woodburn ?

If CW continues this losing streak then do you think the owners will "give him a break"? How big of a break do you want to give him before it's too late?

As much time as he wants.

He'll know the problem but McCabe has tied his hands.
