Id usually be quick to write off and shove a player out the door after a 'quiet' first season but Paul Coutts made me eat my words when all i did was whinge about him and bollock him during his first season at ours!

I'd be disappointed to see Holmes go out on loan at the moment as I think he still has something to offer us this season.

Fair enough if he wants to go back down south or if he hasn't done it by january, but id like to see a bit more of him first. Still if CW (who sees him every day in training and knows him professionally) wants rid then who am I to argue otherwise.

Well clearly, but if he's done here, we learn nothing from him going on loan.
He’s not even started here yet never mind done. He must have upset Wilder if he’s on his bike already? Maybe his missus couldn’t settle this far North? Experiencing panic attacks because strangers smile and say hello and things?

The disappointment with Homes and Leonard is probably why we haven’t looked at League one players this summer.

Took a punt on three in January only one has come off in Evans (although I’m not yet 100% convinced on him)

You won’t ever make a detective mate, that’s all I can say. Where have the majority of our squad come from so far?

I always thought Coutts was a classy player but he wasn’t fully recovered from a long injury and he was also played out on the right, with Brayford, which wasn’t his best position as we now know.

However, even in his early days here he showed flashes of being a classy footballer. Leonard has shown Zilch!

He isn’t even as good as Mikele bloody Leigertwood and he were crap!

When signed they had come from clubs who were in or had just left..

Hendo : Premiership
Baldock: Championship
Bash: Championship
Stearman : Championship
Egan: Championship
JOC : Championship
Stevens : League 2
Duffy: Championship
Coutts: Champioship
Fleck: League one
Evans: League one
Holmes: League one
Lunny : League one
Evans: League one
Sharp: Championship
Clarke: League one
Mcgoldrick: Championship
Woodburn: Premership.

So to answer your question most of our squad came to us from The Championship.

Of the players who joined us from L1 and L2 only Fleck and Clarke have been unqualified successes at the higher level for us.

Well that told him... :D

Baldock - League 1
Lee Evans - Championship (but was on loan in League 1)
Wright - League 2
Duffy - Championship (but was on loan in League 1)
Blackman - Premier League (but was on loan in League 2)
Hendo - Premier League (but was on loan in League 1)
Lavery - Championship
Hanson - League 1
Carruthers - League 1
Lafferty - Premier League
Freeman - championship

I'm not really sure why Oxford would be a big attraction to him, any club that only has three stands to it's ground is a bit weird in my book.. He's a local boy for us (Rochford) and used to watch Southend so it really wouldn't surprise me if he came to us. We've still got a bit left over from the very generous fee that you gave us for Lenny so it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

inspector Clousseau won’t like this post, because you just saved me a job.

The facts are most of our squad (to the end of last season) were signed from lower league.

What a ridiculous conclusion to arrive at, to say that Wilder won’t be looking at lower league now because Evans, Leonard and Holmes haven’t cut it.

Absolute nonsense.

Wilder has said in the last two weeks that he doesn’t mind where we get the players from.

Evans has done ok. Not outstanding, but ok. Leonard is shite so far. Holmes hasn’t had a fair chance.

Check all their club registrations when we signed them. I have.

He should move on, we're clearing looking beyond him and for players with more quality than he has.

Rare weird one from wilder but it happens.

If he goes, good luck to him and no hard feelings

Not that rare..Hussey, Lavery, Evans, Carruthers, Thomas, Heneghan...

More than offset by the gems he's signed I hasten to add !!!

Holmes going may be why we have brought in Kean Bryan, bear with me....

Without Holmes, on paper we have one specialist attacking mid in Duffy, although Woodburn can play there I think personally that he is going to play off another striker in a front 2.

So on that basis we still just have Duffy, but looking at how we shaped up pre season I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fleck is deployed as the attacking mid, not necessarily from the start but perhaps later on in games when Duffy tends to fade and get subbed. If Woodburn has already spent all of the game on the pitch then he is unlikely to be moved back into a more physically tough position, so moving Fleck forward instead and sticking a holding mid behind might make more sense. We do have other options of course but Chris likes balance and having a left footed option would make sense, especially if Lunny or Leonard have picked up knocks.

Just a thought.

Woodburn is basically the replacement for Holmes to battle it out with Duffy. If you’ve noticed during pre season we kept going with 3 strikers as players like Mcgoldrick drop deep etc. It causes defenders all types of issues.

I think Bryan is the left footed version of Leonard. Bryan was meant to be £2million plus to Rangers so should be good competition.

Do you want to buy Leonard back? I always rated Leonard. But when we played Bradford in pre season I never realised the huge gulf between the leagues.

which ones of those I listed are wrong?

We signed Baldock from MK Dons who were in League 1
Wright had just won promotion with Oxford from League 2 when we signed him

Go back and read the post again. (Specifically the bit that said “in or just left” the division)

Is it just me that thinks he deserves more of a chance. Still don’t feel like we’ve seen him play in the championship and the one full game i’ve seen him at wolves he looked decent.

Id second that, thought he looked decent when he came on agaisnt Inter too.

Rug Ron hasn't been generous enough to replace the ramshackle Roots Hall yet?
We have some very impressive navy blue fencing round the proposed new site together with some quite spectacular navy blue hoardings on the shops in front of Roots Hall extolling the virtue of the new ground. His latest plan is to get large banners attached to Southend Pier advertising the new ground. As with all things, we wait for the Council to vote on the latest set of plans. The Hilton Hotel chain has signed up to build a hotel as part of the new ground. Bet you're really pleased you asked now eh? To be fair to Ron he has fixed some of the more dangerous stuff in Roots Hall but the West Stand bog roof still leaks when it rains. It's a ground full of endearing character and old school charm mate.

Nope, never go back is our motto, it never works second time round. Lenny will find his best position in a Championship side but I'm not too sure it will be with you chaps.

Bigger Club, better manager, maybe he has a fear of wigs who knows.
