Doubt he'll be good enough for the Geordie's in the Premiership but more than proven at Championship level. He's 34 so wouldn't cost much,if anything, and could be a perfect partner for Billy for a season or two. I know he's way gone our usual age profile but he'd be nailed on to get double figures and could be the big target man we need.

When you say "he wouldn't cost much, if anything", are you referring to his transfer fee or the overall salary? I'd suggest that Newcastle would look to recoup most of the £4m fee they paid in Jan and also that he'd most likely be unwilling to drop much, if anything, from his current salary.

With all this in mind, I'd say there's as much chance of Utd signing Messi as there is Murphy

He's not a terrible signing, far from, I just I don't think he'll be value for money in terms of fee paid, re-sale value and wages he'll be likely earning. Don't see them being anywhere near the playoffs either this season.
