Long time viewer first time poster so go easy on me eh?

Anyway, appreciate he may have had a few injury issues previously but Jon Swift at Reading would be ideal to compete with Duffy for the attacking / creative midfield role surely and still at a great age (although I also appreciate he may come with a hefty price tag too! - £3-4M possibly?).

Waghorn just isn't going to happen. So, as others have already mentioned, a young forward who offers something a bit different is Adam Armstrong who, by all accounts, could be available for around the £3M. This may seem like large sum of money but for a good young player who will only get better, he's got to be worth a gamble.

It's the sort of thing we should be able to do with the 'Brooks money'. It would be a great way to spend it.

But for Swift I think we'd be looking at a minimum of £6-7m.

Both fit the bill in many ways. Both good ages with re-sale value. Wilder has spoken very highly of Swift previously, so I’d definitely expect he’d be interested if he was available.

Wage wise I’d imagine we’d be alright. Downside would be fees- I’d expect it would be a bare minimum £6m-£8m to get them both.

Yeah, maybe being a little optimistic with the Swift valuation but for a player that hasn't played a massive amount of games over the last season or so it just goes to show how crazy these player valuations have become! Either way, could still be worth testing the water and could potentially prove to be an excellent signing.

I stand by my comments on Armstrong as well though. If he really is available for around the £3M mark, wants to play football and doesnt just hold out for the biggest wages, he too could be a very shrewd signing (just got a bad feeling someone else will snap him up instead (Blackburn rumoured to be interested).

Get a few more £££'s of the Walker, McGuire and Brooks money spent eh?! . . . . Awaits barrage of abuse from somewhere . . . . . . . .

Swift was superb in a poor team when we played them at the Lane last season. Badly managed by Stam and lost his way a bit, Reading fans really rate him but ones I know think he will leave.

Why have people been suggesting Adam Armstrong , he scored literally no goals for the dingles then didn’t even manage ten for Blackburn last year ?

6 goals isn't 'literally no goals'.

He was at Blackburn half a season, played left wing and scored 9.

He's scored 20 in L1 previously and has obvious ability and potential.

You can't just sign the obvious ones.

Swift would be a good player

Armstrong isn’t championship standard.

A couple of decent suggestions ZM. I like Swift but would have serious reservations over his fitness considering how much he'd cost. I'm unaware of his contract situation but assuming he's got 2 years + left,, I'd be surprised if he'd be within Utd's reach.

Armstrong is an interesting one. There's undoubtedly a player in there and he could potentially be a good investment. He would also provide the pace and movement up front that Utd currently lack in the squad but he would still be a risk having never really proved himself at Champ level before. However, if he had, he too would probably be too expensive for Utd. It does seem however that CW is after more of a target man type and I'm guessing will look for the attacking midfielder (Woodburn or similar) to instead provide the pace and mobility.

I think Armstrong is a classic example of someone who'll shine playing with better players. He has intelligent movement and makes good runs.

He changed the game at the Lane, we were left hanging on in a game we'd been so dominant for 70 mins purely down to him. But don't remember seeing much else of him last season so I'm guessing he's had issues with injuries. Surely half fit he'd have been in that shite Reading side

Yes he's had lots of injury problems. I was at the away game at Reading last season - the minus 10c one - and was talking to some stewards before the game. They said he was a very good player but frequently injured. It's a difficult one isn't it? It's a fine line between signing a bloke with great potential who just happens to have had some lengthy injuries, and signing a crock. If there's any indication at all that Swift will be able to put those injuries behind him then he could be an absolute steal.

(Armstrong I'm not so convinced about. He did well for Cov a few seasons ago, but he's done nothing since then and I think we need pace and height, and he's not got much of one and none of the other!)

See your points with regard to Swift and his previous injury record and it would be a bit of a gamble (we could get a younger version of Duffy or end up with another John Ebbrell - god forbid). Still well worth consideration but only at the right price of course.

As for Armstrong, just got a gut feeling about this lad and could potentially be a long term replacement for Billy perhaps? Think he actually looks that little bit nippier over 5-10 yards to me and also appears to be strong with both feet.
Lets not forget, the lad has been played out of position on numerous occasions and whilst playing for pretty average teams in the process.

With regard to a bigger 'Target Man' type I'm not really sure what's out there and within our reach.
However, Charlie Wyke (Bradford) might be worth a look at and cant imagine he'd either cost the earth or be on ridiculous wages either. He may have lost his way a little over the last 12 months or so but that's whilst playing in a poor side once again.
Not particularly a 'Target Man' as such but still good in the air and surprisingly good feet as well.
