There's an interesting conclusion to be drawn from the preceding few posts. Where CW has got players on frees or next to nothing they have excelled. Where he's paid a sizeable sum (by our standards that is), not so. The cheapo's include Duffy, Fleck, JOC, Baldock, Donaldson and Clarke. The one's he shelled out for include Henegan, Lavery, Carruthers, Lundstram, Holmes, Leonard, Wilson (sizeable loan fee) etc. I'm surprised KM hasn't cottoned on to this and refused him a transfer budget this season!

Our most epensive player was 700k, although I'd agree that Wilson was probably on big wages.Hardly shelling out is it? If Egan doesn't work you might have a point. That's the first player in can seriously be argued we've paid big money for.

I was careful to say say big money by our standards! The first group cost about £0.5m job lot, the second about £4m. It was the first group who contributed to our relative success last season. The moral of the story is don't bother with the £0.5-1m range of players, you'd be just as well going for freebies and saving the money for one decent signing instead, e.g. Egan. Strangely enough that's whats happened up to now this summer.

You mean like Fleck
It was fortunate for us that Coventry were in turmoil. I am of the opinion CW knows far more than I do. So he picks the starting 11 for his own good reasons & I'm not going to disagree with him. Maybe he sees some players as impact players which is why they are on the bench & never play much more than 30 minutes. I'm positive Chris knows what he's doing.

Thought he did really well when he came on, certainly stood out more than Duffy. With a Full Pre Season under his belt we may begin to see why CW was so keen to sign him.
Yeah I agree on this, Holmes looked more comfortable than Duffy and Duffy only really came to life when billy came on

I thought he was on the pace and buzzing about he did link up well with Billy right at the end, but they were the only positives. Two of his passes destroyed two moves, he couldn't pass it 5 yards to Enda who was behind their right back resulting in it going out, and then passes it 5 yards to Billy in the box who was ready to pull the trigger but he passed it behind him from 5 yards. So I generally hope this discrepancies can be ironed out in the season proper.

I'm sure Chris appreciates it

Hussey, Hanson, Carruthers, Thomas, Heneghan, Lavery, Lafferty & Wilson. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Yin & yang, innit. For all we know, we might have already seen all that Holmes has to offer at this level. If I was still getting up to speed in my job after nearly 7 months, I’d be clearing out my locker & handing my name badge back to my supervisor.
I take your point. Some of those you mentioned, Heneghan ( jury still out, could come good), Hanson (did a job at a specific time), Carruthers (just didn't work out, it happens). Being a footballer is a unique occupation. Trust me, when your confidence is low as a footballer, you hear every sigh, groan etc, in the crowd. Just try doing your job watched by thousands giving advice and criticism in equal measure. What I am saying is, the nature of the job means picking a winner every time is impossible. If you were to add up all Wilder's players worth now, I bet it's at least 10 times what he paid.
Ps: I never rated Hussey. I do, however, really rate Lafferty. I like the look of Holmes but we will see. I will add, though I played the game, I am not great at picking players. Their technical ability and talent I can spot but all the other stuff I have been proved time and time again, to be pretty shit.

He sadly seems out of his depth. Maybe League 1 is as good as it gets for him?

We desperately need to bring in an attacking midfielder before the end of the window. It really has to be on a permanent basis as well as we'll need two next season otherwise.

I thought along with Duffy for the first hour he was only one of two players that looked up for it tonight. He makes a mazy run down the left hand side of Donny's defence second half and wins a free kick on the edge of the area. He was one of the best dead ball specialists in League 1 last year but we decide that JOC is the better option to go for goal and he promptly spoons the ball ovbewr the bar.

Edit: over the bar. Holmes probably thinks why the fck should I bother.

I’m a big fan of Ricky Holmes but I thought he struggled today. He just doesn’t seem intelligent enough to be in our side. His ability is there to see but maybe he needs to drop back to League one. Would reasses in janursry.

To quote Bob Marley, ‘don’t worry about a thing, cos every little thing is gonna be alright’. I’ve been reliably informed by the more learned board members that he looks eager & runs around, plus he’s had 7 months (including one of our magical pre-seasons) to bed in, the rest will surely come. Surely?!?

He always seems rushed, even with minimal pressure. Like he can't react or think quickly enough and panics.

He just isn’t on Duffys level. Add to the fact he’s 31, I’d like to see us see if Walsall are interested in a swap deal for otzumer

Its almost as if Kev has had a word with Wilder and said "Oi, if you're going to nag me for transfer money, at least play the fuckers" and this is why we've got Lundstram and Holmes featuring in the pre-season friendlies. If these two are going to be regular starters it doesn't bode well for the coming season.

well done - glad to see someone else who doesn't sit on the fence.

Agree totally - some of our fans should ask themselves where they actually want us to finish. For me it's top 6 and if either of those two play 40 games in a season then we definitely won't be finishing top six. Both are decent, honest footballers - but it's about QUALITY now, not what we purchased LAST season for LAST seasons problems.
