At what point did I say , or even imply that I think 10 mill for Waghorn represents value for money ?

The answer of course is I didn't , and nor do I . It is widely reported that the offer we have tabled is 5 mill and if we can get him for that , or even a bit more , I believe he would be an excellent acquisition.

Your comments about spending money on an international scouting network are entirely irrelevant to this debate, which is about the here and now and the signing of a striker who can make a significant difference next season .

Adam Armstrong and " a decent prospect on loan " are not quite the answers I was looking for in this respect .

I didn’t say you did.

My original point (which I don’t think is different to yours) is that 5 million is the top end of value for a player with his history - a solid but unspectacular championship player.

The rumours seem to be it’s gonna take 8-10m for him to come here - which imo is ludicrous. Hence I think spending money on scouting so we aren’t being held to ransom is a valid strategy. 5million stretches a hell of a lot further abroad and there won’t be an expectation of 40k per week wages which we can’t pay.

My preference would be to go for a young lad with his career ahead of him at half the price and a very good goal scoring record.

400 grand last summer, Wilder. 400 fucking grand. It is a tough market but you don't help yourself missing deals like that.

After spending £600k on Stearman, £400k on Baldock and £700k on Lundstram, we didn't have £400k for Waghorn last summer. Wilder prioritised the defence and midfield - we spent a combined £150k on Evans and Donaldson up front.

Not if the coady bid was true tbf. Which it obviously was as wilder confirmed it.

waghorn’s value has increased exponentially following a decent season at this level. 20:20 hindsight is a wonderful thing probably 15 championship clubs will be kicking themselves they didn’t also go for him last summer.

We bid for Egan and Coady(!) though didn't we? And had bids in for Leonard and others.

Our best hope is Derby pulling out after signing Marriott.
Hmmmm. The only "game" i can think of is getting the players heart set on a move here rather than Derby. Up to the point of him forcing a move.
Unless we meet their valuation though or at least match what Derby are offering it seems dead in the water.
Surely Derby can't take him AND Marriott out of the market though.

I would imagine it depends on them selling Vydra. Even their fans are confused by what the plan is.

I think I did mention him. But given that he finished the season well at Rangers, I had no idea he was available so cheaply. Presumably Wilder did. And if he rates him enough to have bid £5m plus now, it's a bit bizarre that we didn't take the chance to sign him a year ago. He was the same player he is now.

I take your point, and there's definetly an argument to say we should have been in for him last season when he was less than a 10th of his current value.

However, I don't subscribe to your view that "He was the same player he is now." - the season before last he scored 7 goals in the SPL, this season he scored 16 in the championship: there's a huge difference, hence why the massive change in value.

Basically, Wilder may not have considered him off the back of his 16/17 season, and I don't blame him.

I hope no-one rises to the bait of offering 8-10m.
It drags on, Ipswich get desperate and tell us we can have him for 5 and Wilder tells them to fuck off.

I think Derby could be playing a game as well to force Peterborough into accepting a bid for Marriot...

This made me chuckle. I think everyone wants cheap superstars.

Being reported that Derby want both, Marriot and Waghorn

Just seen that. They can't afford both. It seems they still prefer Marriot and I reckon Waghorn could still be a target for us, obviously even more so if Marriot joins Derby.

Yep, I was surprised too. Especially as they still have Vdrya and leeds seem to have gone cold on him.

marriot was pulled from the pbro team last night we wont go for waghorn at 8 m ipswich need to realise that amout is crazy 5 tops

Some complain that we sell too easily to the early bids, but then complain when other clubs slap price tags on players that they think are too high.

Derby are playing a dangerous game if they really want Waghorn.

They have Jerome, Vydra, Nugent and soon to be Marriott. They'll have to get rid after they sign Waghorn leaving them in a very poor bargaining position when it comes to flogging probably Vydra.

Alternatively, they want to keep their asset or get huge value for him. Fair play imo a bidding war is exactly what they want

I'm sure Ipswich aren't desperate to sell, but they know we're desperate to buy a striker.

Cue a game of chicken before the deadline.
