CONFIRMED George Long sold to Hull City

There is a mentality amongst our fans (and perhaps I’m guilty of the same re: someone like McNulty) that because you’ve seen him play some shit games for us wherever he goes next he will continue to be viewed as shit – regardless of whatever good performances he has put in, or will put in, as Unitedites we are often far to reluctant to dispense of views based on evidence that undermines them. You see the same to a certain extent with DCL “never a Premier League player”, and the reverse with someone like Ched Evans who despite showing nothing much of note in two years since returning to the game is just a preseason from becoming amazing again.

Same fans who take great delight in reminding Coventry fans that they 'all thought Fleck was lazy and shit'

I thought Long was a good shot stopper, but wasn`t brave enough or decisive enough. I would expect his loan spells to have given him more confidence and made him a better all round keeper. As things stand, I would be surprised if he were retained unless someone else is shipped out.

They’ll still be one of our fans somewhere waiting for Simon Francis to be sold to someone outside the Premier League so they can immediately leap on it with “See! Told you he was shit!”

hes never been " rubbish"
hes been behind some rubbish defenders whod make any keeper look nervous
his clean sheet ratio in a very poor team is testament to him not being rubbish
he has the highest clean sheet ratio of any blades keeper in the past decade
Englands best current defender was one of those in front of the quietest , most brittle keeper we have had in years. Says a lot when Wilder has used and acquired 2 loan keepers , 1 permanent and 2 prospects in front of him in the 2 years he has been here.

Long's time with United is done. That doesn't mean that he's "rubbish"; he'll have a decent career at Championship/League One level.

As soon as a keeper starts doubting their decisions they're in trouble and that was Long's issue. The reaction from the 'fans' when he went through a poor patch of form - as almost every player does - was pathetic; what did they expect to achieve ironically cheering a Blades keeper (who supports the club, by the way) claiming a routine cross?

Moore has been given far more slack by those same numbskulls. That's what I can't get my head around.

I slag very few players off ,Long , Baxter and Hill the main ones in my sights ,but never when we are playing ,I hate that. I missed Longs biggest nightmare at Gillingham ,but I knew and saw quite a bit of him before he played for us and nothing from his performances changed my mind. The weakest keeper I have seen for Utd.

Indeed, and can happen at higher levels too. Karius had an awful blunder vs Tranmere this last week for Liverpool and is displaying exactly the same issues of confidence.

Young or not, he was contracted to the club as a professional footballer. Other professional’s got vitriol from the fans in those dark times, why should he be different? Because he was young? Because he’s a Blade? Sadly, he’s just not good enough. Move him on, take the money and run.

The number of "clean sheets" a team make is not a direct measure of how good a goalkeeper is. The goalkeeper is only partly responsible for keeping clean sheets - it's about the other 10 players as well. You could put the world's greatest goalkeeper in a poor team and he'd concede loads more than a rubbish goalkeeper in a good team.

I can't believe we still have this debate about George Long. I didn't think he was rubbish, but I did think he was unreliable and simply not good enough. He was an accident waiting to happen, and on too many occasions that accident happened. The barmiest one of all being when he hesitated and took so long with the ball at his feet in the box, under no pressure, that a striker from the other team had time to run a good 10 or 15 yards into the box and tackle him and score. I'll remember that one for all time. I've never seen a goalkeeping blunder as bad as that before. I just turned to the blokes next to me and we were all open-jawed in disbelief. This bloke said to me..."Well, that was just bloody disastrous" - and it was. There were just too many stupid errors and folks at the time were saying, "he's only a kid", and some are still saying that now.

Look, I've met this lad George Long. He's a really nice lad. Very modest and polite. I think it's fantastic that he's had such a good season at Wimbledon and if he gets a chance now to go back and keep goal for Mr Madkins, then great! I'll genuinely be pleased for the lad. I honestly didn't think he was good enough to carve out a career for himself as a professional goalkeeper from what I'd seen. Maybe he has improved a lot then? If so, more power to him. But I could never trust him between the sticks again - and for that reason it really is best that he moves on.

Maybe the defenders were nervous playing in front of George? Are they the same defenders who must also have lots of clean sheets or do I misunderstand?

And lots of our fans said Maguire was rubbish too.

Not defending the decision for Long to leave far from it but he’s not rubbish he was a young keeper who lost his confidence and made mistakes. Having said that if he goes to Ull I hope he is rubbish when we play them although from past experience with other players we thought were crap he’ll no doubt have a blinder!

If he is now able to deal with corners and crosses into the box better then he has improved his game. Always seemed like an OK shot stopper just needed to work on his confidence and other bits of his game.

If we can sell him and get a good fee with a decent sell on clause then we should.

when harry was here he wasnt what he is now, hw was as raw as Long

wimbledon fans love him

“we were lucky to come away with a point today. George Long? Inspired”

“best signing has to be George Long, he’s been our savior quite a few times this season.”

“remember people raving about him and then he hit a bad patch at Sheff utd.”

“Long had come under abuse from his own fans at Sheff Utd”

“hopefully we get to cheer his name next season”

“I would love 2 see George between the sticks 4 many more seasons”

As to him being solely responsible for the debacle at gillingham why not mention Murphy playing statues for 90 minutes didnt help , but of course hes one of englands finest, the fact he adopted a sell me cos this will be my level of effort posture doesnt register

Are you seriously comparing Long and Maguire ,even when they played for us ??
I don't give 2 fucks what Wimbledon fans think ,they think Lyle Taylor is great ,Gillingham fans thought Marlon King was great ,Ive seen plenty enough of him to form my own opinion ,and it aint great.
I do agree with Wimbledon fan on one thing , I hope hes between their sticks for many more seasons.

My brother in law knows George quite well he (George) hasn’t found a new club yet after being told by Wimbledon that he’s not going back there as you can imagine after a successful time there he’s disappointed and also frozen out at United means he has no club to play for if he’s not careful he could become a Journeyman apparently he’s on a decent wage so perhaps that’s the sticking point.

I think you will find we blames Collins just as much ,as did one manager.

Spoke to Atkins at Faro airport on Saturday. He wants him but said has a budget of £2.50.

I said double that and you can have him !!

I thought he was a decent shot stopper / reflex keeper. He did well when he didn't have time to overthink things.

I wouldn't be against giving him another shot as a number 2 if Moore leave us.

Hopefully as he has grown up away from the abuse his confidence in his own ability has improved and he can command his box and organise his defence better.

If he moves on then good luck to him. He certainly wasn't the only one underperforming in that team

Another example of your lack of class.

Do you think of derogatory nicknames for all Sheff Utd players you dont like, or just the one's that come through the academy?

That’s not one of mine! I think alcoblade takes credit for that one.

It’s entirely descriptive of the vast majority of his performances, so I adopted it.

What happened to most of his shot stops?

Descriptive of the vast majority of his career performances or descriptive of his time at United?

You didn't answer my question either, by the way: is your vitriol aimed exclusively at academy graduates or is no player safe?

I think it is just academy players Chali.

I think so too.

I'd love to know why though.

He delights in ridiculing them. Sheffield lads who have come through the Academy.

Long has always been a Blade and been at United since he was 10 years old. Played nearly 200 pro games, looks like getting a move to another Champ club but Punchy still pours scorn and ridicules him and many other Academy lads who are trying their best to make their way in football.

It certainly is an odd one Chali.

Why do you hate our academy graduates? You were even taking the piss out of Brooks earlier.
