I’m after help from you merry bunch of bladesmen.
My eldest after loads of prompting from me has chosen to come to the open day at Sheffield uni, top lad, to be fair he loves the blades so I think it will be a no brainier for him.
Guess when the leather arm patch wearing knobs have their open day, this Saturday and the talk on Astro engineering is at 2pm the dicks!
So I can’t now cancel on him and I haven’t been back for about 20 years and only lived in Sheffield for 4 years so it’s all very hazy.
Can u guys recommended somewhere close we could watch match with the Mrs not to far from the uni so I don’t miss to much?
Then onto a top night around Sheffield later on
Thanks in advance

I'd recommend The York just up the road at Broomhill.

Apologies then.

Could've sworn it used to have one. Then again I haven't been in the York since about 2004.

Assuming that your 'Astro' talk is near the Engineering Depts off Broad Lane, then your nearest boozers are:
Fagins
University Arms
Francis Newton
Red Deer
Three Tuns

You could venture onto West Street but they are likely to be packed with a lager swilling 'livelier' crowd.

As others have said, plenty of options in Broomhill/Crookes
Nottingham House
Fox and Duck
Broomhill Tavern
Old Grindstone
Noahs

All of the above do at least a reasonable pint of proper beer but I can't guarantee they will all have TVs.

The Green Room (opposite Dev Green) is showing all the WC games.

I write an excellent Blog about Sheffield United, Beer & Pubs & am a very useful source of information.
However as your post appears to be anti-science, anti-engineering & anti-learning - you're on your own pal. Way it goes sometimes .....

Just round the corner from the York (which doesn't have TV), is "The Itchy Pig", a small real ale bar, great beers on (cask and keg) and friendly people. They don't usually have TV but put a screen in, just for the footy.

Thanks that’s great

Thanks to all, well mostly , that should give us plenty of options, enjoy the day people we will undoubtedly be brushing shoulders with you later that day UTB ⚔️

WALKABOUT will have it on the big screens, as will a few around west st/division st.....

The University Arms is certainly close to the university ;)

It doesn't have a TV. Broomhill Tavern or Fox & Duck would be my choices (I may even be in one of them myself ;)).

The Itchy Pig (micropub) also has a screen in for the World Cup, but obviously space is at a premium.

THIS^ Went before a steak at La Vaca for my birthday and watched a bit of Mexico Sweden, but it's a micro pub. Try the Captain Hop Beard. Kin ell.

Cerebus may have a good call on the Sentinel for the food and space, but I've never liked the beer except the SG.

Kelham Island for good beer. Dev Cat for Belgian headache beer, Ecclesall Road for your missus.

Unfortunately, despite good intentions most of the responses are not very helpful, the pubs either not showing the football or not being close to where you'll be. It's worth double-checking exactly where the talk is, but most Engineering talks are being held at The Diamond which is next to St George's between West Street and Broad Lane.

It's also worth double-checking the time as most talks are running twice - you might decide to go to a better-timed one.

Assuming you're at The Diamond then the closest pub is the Red Deer. Good ale, but it doesn't show football. The closest places definitely showing the match are Cavendish and The Beehive, just around the corner on West Street. The Beehive is the better of the two. Neither are classy ale houses - they're cheap student places and will be busy. Fagans is also close, and a great pub, but I doubt they show football. The University Arms is just up the road and also good for beer, but they don't have TVs. While in the past they've shown big games on a special screen I've not seen anything to suggest they're doing that this time. The Itchy Pig is a great pub, but a 15-20 minute walk up hill and it's likely to be packed. You will find it on at one of the Broomhill/Crookes pubs if you decide to walk that way, but they're further than The Itchy Pig. In the opposite direction you've got the Green Room and Common Rooms on Division Street which both serve acceptable real ale and will have the match on. They'll be busier than the Crookes pubs but are closer. Sentinel Brewhouse is a decent pub but it's at the other end of town. No good unless you're driving, and if so there are plenty of options.

My suggestion? Interval Café at the Student's Union.

It's closer than Crookes, will be less busy than West Street/Division Street, serves decent beer and has a big screen showing the World Cup. It's next door to Bar One which is the main University student bar, which will also have the game on but has poor beer and will be busier. Interval is much more student's mum friendly. Pretty sure you'll be able to get in on Open Day but I'll check tomorrow. If there turns out to be a problem with Interval then the Doctor's Orders is a pub just next to the Uni which sells real ale and has lots of TVs. If that's not an option you can continue up to The Itchy Pig or other Crookes pubs.

I would back up Cassius Krays suggestion and head for the Interval bar in the students union.

Has to be London Road or Heeley. The Blades heartland to start the youth on his merry way..

Failing that...

Byron in Nether Edge is decent and multi tellied , but a cab away.

Old Wards Brewery is a Wetherspoons and believe they are showing World Cup so bit of history and economy, though can attract occasionally elements of pond life.

If you’ve not been around for a while do not seek The Sheldon, The Bridge, The Domino, The Lansdowne, The Tramway, The Cross Guns. Sadly, a combo of Cameron and large brewers greed have altered the once great pub landscape of our mighty city.

Anyone ITK as to where Sir Chris will be doing his Peroni?

Wrong section but can understand it's all down to English hysteria ;)

As the Tram is 2mins from where you'll be, the city is your oyster!

They all have Sky barring Nottingham House so will definitely have the football on. The Ball at Crookes is great for sport as they really know how to put on an event and The Punchbowl also have several big screens and a projector.

Another to consider dependent on how far you want to travel would be Picture House Social on Abbeydale Road. They've had a massive screen fitted in the car park and have street food and craft beer stalls serving alongside the more standard beer offerings and i know several people who've seen the other games there and have said the atmosphere was brilliant and none of the beer chucking idiots when we score.
