What style of back do you prefer on our home shirts?

Email gone to the commercial dept:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I write this email a little bewildered as to how the new home shirt has been deemed fit for release with a plain white back.

We changed to stripes before everybody's lifetime, in 1894 and in that time have NEVER had a plain white back. We have had two shirts with a plain red back.

Sheffield United play in RED and WHITE, we're the Red and White Wizards, if you ask a neutral what colour we play in the answer is Red, or Red & White. Red is always the first colour associated with our team and it is the most dominant colour. If you speak to folk in different cities, they say "are you Blades or Owls"? or "red or blue?" It's not "Are you White or Blue".

What has happened is we now have a shirt that is WHITE and RED. The main colour is white. This now means we can't wear our traditional kit at places like Leeds United, Derby County or Preston NE, we will be forced to change into our away shirt.

From the front, the green sponsor aside, the shirt looks really nice, the white sleeves are a welcome and unique change to our kit. It's something fresh and new. The stripes are a perfect width and look like a proper blades kit from 50s, 60s and 80s (the 70s were thicker with black introduced). But then you see the back and it's like looking at the back of an away shirt.

I would like you to please answer as to why this was sanctioned by the club without first consulting the Fans? After all, who is the shirt for, other than the fans? They are the ones that you want to market this for aren't they?

If it is Adidas who are calling the shots on a plain back, why isn't it RED, our MAIN colour? Why didn't you consult the fans if they wanted a Red or White back?

If Adidas aren't calling the shots and SUFC had a choice in the matter, why aren't the stripes continued onto the back? The identity of the club has been torn away. Next season we are a team that play in solid white, with 5 red stripes on the front.

Soon after the release, a vote was put up on the blades forum S24SU, as I type this (20:43, 29/06/18) the current voting is as follows:
  • Striped back 161 votes (93%)
  • Red back 7 votes (4%)
  • White back 5 votes (3%)
The voting has been open just 4 hours. Here's the thread - https://s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/kit-vote.64652/

Read the comments under the official tweet from the club. For every 1 person who likes it, there are 5 questioning the back, or the green sponsor -

Then, compare the comments with last seasons release, hardly any negative comments :

In today's era of social media, It is truly baffling as to how/why, you didn't consult the fans before releasing a plain white back.

Please reconsider changing the back of the kit to stripes, or even a solid red back, if it must be solid.

It's not too late, please do it for the fans, without us, there is no club.

I would appreciate a response as to your thoughts on this matter.

Yours Faithfully
Roger Nilsen

It's far too late sadly, we're stuck with it :(

Good e mail RN especially the point about having to wear the away kit against the likes of Weeds but you missed a trick in asking them to change the colour of the sponsor. They won't change the template as Adidas dictate this but SUFC have complete control over the sponsors logo. They need to grow some balls and tell Ramsdens if the colour of their logo on Middlesbrough shirts is red and white then it will be the same at SUFC. If that means Door Deals have to do the same then so be it.

This kit is a rival to the old diamond kit of Bassets time and the 125 kit worn by one of the worse United teams ever, I see a relegation battle looming. Jesus Wept that shirt is a right bollocks of a design fuck me !

I'm not sure what to think. Mine will only cost a tenner next springtime anyway.

In all seriousness and to maximise sales you would have thought there was a channel to guage interest and ideas from the folk that will be buying them

Shouldn't be difficult to do surely.
Isn’t that how we ended up with that diamond pattern kit though? Asked a load of drunken card-playing Blades.

The Ramsdens logos were green for first few Boro kits.
Maybe it's a well sponsor you for 5 year but we want our proper colours first?

I wonder what people would think of this

I don't really have an issue with green.

This from a River Plate supporter on twitter, in response to the many complaints from our supporters. They have the same template and he is pointing out that they hated theirs at first but actually when you add the numbers and names it doesn't look too bad.

Theirs does have black lettering on the front though which softens the blow a little.

It may be alright for River Plate supporters, this is Sheffield.

Green no problem with me, goalie jerseys traditionally, old programmes green printing Christmas and New Year, Desso and turf. Only if portrayed as you have, not within a white or red patch, adamant. I cocked that up Bromtom sorry, sure you get my gist. Nice shirt, needs striped arms and back.

I dont mind the kit so much but that Ramsdens sticker just ruins it. I won’t be buying one

If you look closely, the promo has the players posing in shirts without the sponsors' logo on the front (and actually looks decent). The shot of the players at the end has the logo photoshopped on.This would suggest it was filmed before the club had a sponsorship deal lined up.

The big logo on a white band slapped over the front certainly has the look of a last minute deal, and ruins what is a decent FRONT of the shirt. No stripes on the back looks like a mistake, probably more of cost cutting measure by the manufacturers, though, to booster profits.

I'll stick to wearing a classic retro, thanks.

Are you a carpenter or joiner you've hit the nail right on the head.

A relegation battle because of the kit design? Jesus wept indeed

The players seem to like it anyway, Billy put a load of emojis on twitter, others have been liking it on instagram - don't think they'll feel down playing in it. Even if you don't think it looks like a "proper" United shirt, you'd be hard pushed to say it wasn't a quality item of sportswear (apart from that sponsor logo box which is admittedly a bit shite).

Yeah bad call from whoever, I'd take a guess Adidas made the decision. Won't be impressed with sales from what I've seen alot including myself will be passing on this one.

This shirt has come from the Adidas parts bin. Cobbled together from other clubs cast offs and what’s left at the end of the production line. Disgraceful and only cheapens the image of the club. Wake up United!

It is Adidas they made a corporate decision that all teams with striped shirts will have a blank back. Well Adidas your about to lose money BIG TIME so put that in your corporate pipe and smoke it. Fire the guy/girl that suggested it, fire those that wanted all striped shirt teams to be universal, Why? BECAUSE HIM/HER/THEM ARE FUCKING IDIOTS. Why? Because had they done research they wouldn’t even of considered this!!!!

Yes, I'm sure that Adidas will be quaking in their boots at the prospect of losing the Mighty Sheffield United...

For years we complained about the poor quality of kits, and pleaded with the club to bring in a player like Adidas. Regrettably this is the payoff for that - I don't like the white back (if we have to have a solid colour it should be red) - but I'm not sure I'd want to go back to the previous suppliers...

The White back is obviously piss poor.

But that hideous green thing painted across the front is even worse. Looks like 5th place winner in a primary school kit design competition.

If all striped kits have been changed to plain backs then I bet it's not just us kicking off about it.

There's an opening here for some entrepreneur to manufacture a couple of thousand waistcoats with a red and white striped back.

Who else has Adidas with stripes? Brentford do, but they often have a striped back so no uproar there.

Is your real name Roger Nilsen?

If so that's really strange - we once had a player of the same name!

Well I like it but bloody hell do people like a moan I can understand the old miserable buggers because that's what we do but the young uns, get a life, shouldn't they be out drinking alcopops and fingering birds instead of whinging on about there being too few stripes ont back of a shirt.
