This article says "Sterling Dropped in Leaked Team Sheet"... I struggle to see or understand how, that states that he has been dropped. Every player in the squad is listed on it. All it shows is Sterling 'may' drop into Dele Alli's role.

For me it’s shows the starters on top with the understudy/cover below them..

It's typical general shithousery by the english national sports press. For the last couple of managerships there's been a lot of ill feeling & mistrust between the team and press. It's my understanding that GS has made great efforts this tournament to give the press better access & interaction with the players and he gets repaid with this. Whether or not it's informed Panama of anything they didn't previously know is irrelevant, it's the spirit of the photo & story. When the photo crossed some editor's desk, he/she should've just looked at it, thought "ohh, a bit careless", and thrown it in the bin, releasing in the grand scheme of things it's a non-story, and would just set an unnecessary tone and damage relationships.

Just as a police officer has discretionary powers of arrest, a journalist has discretion in what he or she chooses to report, not everything that comes to their attention needs to make the papers. The photo & article shows a lack of it, a desire for clickbait articles and sets a tone. They may as well start going through the rubbish bins at the hotel to see if there's anything of interest.

I think your comments, in a nutshell and purely in my opinion, are exactly what is wrong with the Media and its approach to sport in the UK.

The Media are privy to lots of information which could be seen as detrimental if it were leaked, some doesn't ever see the light of day.

As others have said on this thread and in particular Nicolaus_Copernicus mentioned it but Southgate has work with the media much more and yet something like this, a careless slip in front of a long lense and it gets leaked. Its not some spy film, the coaching staff should be able to have confidence that the media won't run a story on something which is potentially damaging to Englands match preparations.

If I were Southgate, i'd fuck the media off right now.

As a man plugging his book on the manager of the Blades, if you found yourself in a similar situation before the Sheffield Derby and Alan Knill had the team written on a piece of paper during a training session would you run the story? Afterall its 'news' to you.

The job of the media as you say is to report news. The news in this case is not to leak the team its to report on the training and that provide the news that the England set up want to give at that time. The team news will be given officially by England when they see fit

It's their job to report newsworthy items and like it or not the England team revelation 3 or 4 days before they play IS a newsworthy item . Issues around the moral worth of what they did is of course debatable but the fact that our media do stoop very low on occasion is accepted practice . For me, if we're talking the England set up and leaking the team, yes, the England camp have had a wake up call and they were unbelievably caught offguard. No damage done, its before a game against Panama and i'd expect us to win comfortably if we're a decent side.

However, the issue i have is that the Media had a decision to make, either get behind Southgate and the faith he has put in the media, or sell him out and make some news out of it.

We can level insult after insult at them or debate endlessly in a calm and rational manner with them but it won't make any difference to them at all ..... they will publish what they want when they want . The Sun who broke the story laughing about the fact Holland in one of his first interviews said to the press that he felt the publishing of the team before the game was the ultimate betrayal. Another hack saying he replied to a tweet asking if they would ever stoop so low as to print the England team before the World Cup Final on the back page. His reply was " no we wouldn't it would be on the front page".

It’s not the World Cup final, and we’re playing Panama - we should piss it, whatever the names are and however early they may or may not have been leaked by the press. I’d pick Rashford ahead of Sterling, but I’m not the England manager and I’m sure Southgate has his reasons for sticking with Sterling.

The print media that surround the England team are largely a tragic bunch.

The England set up have to indulge them whilst knowing they’ll happily tear them to shreds for failure or indiscretion. Not just by reporting truth, but by character assassination and witch hunt. Yet the players are supposed to be matey with them all and grant them access...

Their sense of self importance is pretty repulsive. They speak and write glowingly about how open the camp is to the media, and how critical that is to the event and team’s success. Whereas the truth is, the watching public couldn’t give a toss that some hack gets to play darts with Gary Cahill. The fans just want to see the team do themselves justice on the pitch for the first time in a generation. The rest is noise.

There are some quality journos out there, but the red top hacks are being indulged out of fear, not merit.
