Bramall Lane and the 2030 World Cup

The belief that the council is full of pigs that will always pick the sty over the Lane is up there with the flat earth theory and the fake moon landings for me.

The only reason the sty got the nod last time, was that Dave Richards was still on the FA board and chucked his two penneth in. Nowt to do with the council.

It seems that England (possibly Britain) are going to bid for the 2030 World Cup, and early indications are that we are in with a real chance of getting it.
How likely would it be that Bramall Lane could host some matches? There will be 48 teams and 80 games by then in an expanded World Cup.
I guess Hillsborough would be ahead of us (sadly!) but surely there is a chance both grounds could feature, especially if we get into the Premier League and develop our stadium.
It would also fit in nicely with the Prince's role in Saudi Arabia's 2030 strategy.

Bollocks, buy a centre forward.

What about the flat moon, is that a fake theory?

Bramall Lane will be too far from the host nation. 2030 will be 100 years of the world cup so this tournament will be in South America after a free and fair bidding process.

If England was to be awarded the Qatar World Cup by default. I don’t think Sheffield would even feature. There are so many world class stadiums in the country now and FIFA tend to prefer symmetrical bowls instead of the “tacked together” traditional grounds that either BDTBL or Swilsborough would be.

No chance of the Lane getting any games. It will go to Hillsborough, regardless of what state it is in.
Only way that shithole will get a facelift...imagine the state of the place in 10-12 years?

Possibly not. In the last bidding the FA were looking to spread it out geographically and places like Plymouth were introduced to the mix.

Aye I remember Plymouth and Franchise both being selected but wasn't Leeds and the Sty too?

I don’t think it’s necessary the bowls they like, they want world class facilities.

Can you imagine what FIFA would think of our Kop or the Kop at the Sty? Or leppings lane? Elland Road wouldn’t stand much chance with all the posts.

How fucking sad is it, if a world cup did come to England, theres a chance Sheffield would not even play a part.

FOOTBALL: MADE IN SHEFFIELD.

The above statement should in some way, shape or form be advertised at both Bramall Lane and even Hillsborough. Its something that the city should be proud of.

Actually thinking about it.... give us the opening ceremony!

Was it franchise and Nots Forest that was going to get completely new stadiums? I remember at the time shaking my head in disgust, but my memory could be wrong.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_2018_FIFA_World_Cup_bid

Some of those expansions are laughable! Plymouth and MK 46k! Sunderland 60k, Forest 50k!

When you look at plans like that, it’s obvious that it needs to be a British bid so we can use Hampden, Murrayfield and Millennium so we don’t end up with a load of big stadiums for League One clubs.

Aye I remember Plymouth and Franchise both being selected but wasn't Leeds and the Sty too?

If I remember, the list they came up with, including these, was just the shortlist to be whittled down later. YES Blade 's British option above is the one which would give a Wow factor which would be unsurpassed in the world, especially if you included Twickenham and the ROI's Croke Park too. You could come up with a series of grounds where none of them have a capacity of less than 60k.

If Sheffield is ever chosen to host games again for either the Euros or World cup it will always be Hillsborough, nothing to do with the ground,it is purely down to location and the use of Hillsborough park for the now compulsory big screen 'Fanfest'.A city centre stadium,no matter how good it is wouldn't be chosen because of this.

Totally disagree with that statement, a city centre bid would hold all the aces in comparison to an out of town (residential out of town at that) bid. Logistically for everyone (if it's a Lane for the games / Norfolk Park for the fanfest) it's got to be better for the 80,000 fans - most of who will be supping, eating, staying (vast majority of hotels are in the city centre) and/or getting the train to Sheffield city centre - to walk to the ground rather than ferrying them the 2/3 miles out of town, f*** me they couldn't even get 2,500 United to the sty in time for the start of the derby last season. It's not like when the pigs are at home and most fans are walking down to the ground from t' Cross, Fox Hill, Winn Gardens, Southey, etc, it would be a logistical nightmare getting 80k fans to Hillsborough (a lot from the city centre), why do that when you can just walk them to the Lane or Norfolk Park?

Biggest stumbling block, as a few have said, is those holding the power in Sheffield and the FA, and their porky leanings. The only way around that would be to start getting United people into the corridors of power (i think United's onto that already with all the FA games that are being held at the Lane in recent times), or do a joint bid with the pigs, 2 games each and perhaps have the fanfests at the grounds rather than in a park.

It’s shocking that we don’t push it more. We’ve only ourselves to blame though, it should be plastered all over the city never mind the football stadiums.

We could do a lot worse than getting a movement going in the city to try and propel Sheffield FC upwards a few levels too.

Sadly, until either us or them did a significant upgrade or stadium replacement, don’t think Sheffield won’t see big tournament footy.

Ignoring that fact though, BDTBL would be the better choice of the 2 by far.
Rail links are better.
Position is better.
Facilities are better.
Ground extension plans in place already.
It’s not falling down.
It’s not held together with tarpaulins.
It’s not a filthy hovel.
It’s actually had some money spent on it in the last 10 years already.
Oh - and it’s the oldest professional football ground in the world.

Football may have been 'invented' in Sheffield, but decades of clueless, insular local politicians (is Sheffield still a 'Nuclear-Free Zone'?) have seen the city fall far down the pecking order. I can imagine the conversation:

FIFA: 'So Sheffield, what experience have you got of building stadia and holding major sporting events?'
Donkey wearing red rosette: 'Er, Don Valley Stadium? World Student Games?'

(Sound of door slamming and engines revving.)

Sadly, until either us or them did a significant upgrade or stadium replacement, don’t think Sheffield won’t see big tournament footy.

That's not how these things work. The Clays Lane Housing estate in East London - already an unemployment hot-spot - was demolished (450 homes) to make way for the Geoff Hurst Memorial Olympic Stadium. When FIFA gave the World Cup to Brazil, they wanted to 'uplift' areas of crime and poverty - the 'favellas' - so Hillsborough ticks all the boxes. :D

My final word on the subject (well, until the pub opens...)

DRAFT BID FOR SHEFFIELD

By 2030, it will be 64 years since England hosted the FIFA Infantino World Cup. Here we outline our reasons why Sheffield (‘The Home of Football’) should be considered as a regional host city.

Background

Sheffield is a middling city in the north of England. Badly damaged in World War 2, the destruction was completed by the likes of Betts, Blunkett, Ashton, Hattersley and – more recently – ‘Sir’ Bob Kerslake. It is home to two soccer teams – Chansiri Wednesday and Sheffield United. The latter has a modern, well-maintained stadium in the heart of the city, close to the Chinese Quarter, hotels and railway station. It really doesn’t need any further help from us.

Whereas Chansiri Stadium (not to be confused with Hillsborough Stadium, scene of the worst carnage in English football where 96 supporters died in 1989, no siree, Bob) is one of those deprived causes that FIFA is always receptive to. As well as brown paper envelopes. Embarking on a programme of modernisation, every available space has been given over to the worship of Chairman Chansiri (also known as Kim Wrong ‘Un). This has left no money for trivialities such as preventing parts of the ground falling off, the pitch being routinely flooded and the Chansiri Leppings Lane end (not to be confused with the Leppings Lane end) being covered with tarpaulin. A bold, imaginative attempt to get the Chansiri Owls promoted by ‘investing’ money on elderly, injury-prone players narrowly failed and the cruel, vindictive authorities chose to punish the Chansiri Owls simply for spending money they couldn’t afford. This is why we believe that Chansiri Wednesday should be showered by FIFAs benevolence.

Transport Links

Chansiri Stadium is well served by a bespoke spur of Supertram purely designed to ensure easy passage from Sheffield centre to Chansiri Stadium. It has proved its ability to handle large crowds when, in September 2017, 2500 away fans were denied access to a local ‘derby’ match on Health & Safety grounds.

An alternative means of transport is D Taxis. Bookings are now being taken for 2030.

Security

The local militia – SYPD – have great experience of (mis)handling trouble at major soccer matches. They adopt a ‘hands off’ approach to potential flashpoints (allowing Millwall fans to loot the Spar on Bramall Lane in 2018 as a good example, a ‘business model’ since replicated by another force at Thwaites Brewery, Blackburn). Found totally blameless for the 1989 disaster, SYPD have also finessed a ‘scapegoat’ tactic. Should extra resources be needed for major matches, an innovative scheme called the ROSSER (‘Reciprocal Overtime Scam’) means their friends in Durham Constabulary are always willing to attend.

In the (extremely unlikely) event of major unrest, PCSOs and traffic wardens may be drafted in, but not those brave serving police officers currently in Kos looking for Ben Needham who disappeared 27 years ago (‘Operation Jolly’).

Local Media

Sheffield is served with a local newspaper (for local people), The Sheffield Star, home of the ‘Save Our Owls’ campaign. When not tirelessly engaged in such bias, The Star makes sure that it covers local stories of vital importance.

grass_verge.jpg
Local resident (and part-time Jeremy Clarkson lookalike) George Torr says “it’s a bluddy disgraaace.”

Another local media outlet is BBC Radio Sheffield. To keep listeners’ interest, programmes are routinely interrupted every 15 minutes by ‘Jam Dodger’, a vital resource that informs listeners that traffic is heavier than normal during rush hours.

(It is anticipated that Derek Dooley Way, Bramall Lane Roundabout and Brook Hill Roundabout will still be busy in 2030).

A regular contributor to Radio Sheffield’s ‘Football Heaven’, Mark (or is it Mick?) would be an ideal ambassador for Wednesday’s 2030 bid. When interviewed about the prospect, Mark/Mick said:

“Yeah? Right? Well, yeah, I’m not, right, going to talk about Yoo-nited, yeah, but…”

In summation

Chansiri Stadium and Chansiri Wednesday would be an ideal choice of venue for 2030. They haven’t been gifted a major tournament since 1966 when interest-free loans and World Cup money saw the stadium turned into the ‘Wembley of the North’.

Chansiri Wednesday enjoy close ties to business such as The Coop Bank writing off a £20m loan in the spirit of altruism.

We believe that the local council’s vast experience of major sporting projects such as The World Student Games/Don Valley Stadium makes them an ideal partner in such a project.

Finally, it is anticipated that, by 2030, 254 teams will take part in the FIFA Infantino World Cup. If – by pure coincidence* - Albania, Bulgaria and Romania are chosen to play in Sheffield, they could rely on huge local support.

*Such as Russia getting to play possibly the weakest team in the 2018 WC at home. In the first game. In the national stadium. Pure coincidence.

Yours, the undersigned:

‘Lord’ Coe,

Sepp Blatter,

Michel Platini,

Kim Wrong ‘Un,

Richard (soon to be ‘Lord’?) Scudamore,

‘Sir’ Dave Richards,

The entire 1966 West Ham World-Cup winning squad,

Infantino,

The Star,

Radio Sheffield,

All the usual suspects etc. etc. etc.

Assuming the competition doesn’t expand any further 16 grounds will be needed therefore I can’t see it being anything other than a UK wide bid with 3 London grounds being used.

I’d expect:

1, Wembley
2, Hampden
3, Millenium
4, Emirates/WHL
5, London Stadium
6, Old Trafford
7, Parkhead
8, Anfield/New Everton stadium
9, Villa Park
10, Elland Road (which looked every inch the shit tip it is on the TV the other day but the FA seem to like it)
11, and upgraded Windsor Park or new NI national stadium
12, King Power stadium
13, St James’ Park

14, 15 and 16 will probably be a toss up between any 3 of Sheffield, Sunderland, Hull, MK, Nottingham and Swansea. Wolves or West Brom might get a look in as well given their proximity to Birmingham. They may also team up with ROI to use the Aviva stadium as well.

I think there's some rule that no city can have more than 2 host stadiums so that probably rules out number 3. Also the Kingpower is a boring shitty bowl and it's too small. I don't like the multi host format either, England could easily host it by ourselves without the Scots and Welsh trying to get involved just so that they can qualify for once. So they can fuck right off.

The 2030 World Cup will be in Uruguay and Argentina.

2034 will be in Australia and New Zealand

2038 is the next time it may return to Europe although it may be Africa so 2042 is possible.

By 2030, stadia location will be an irrelevance. All fans (only those with valid tickets, of course) will be teleported directly to their allocated seat. There will still, however, be the mother of all queues if you go for a pie and a pint at half-time.

Don’t see it being in a single country now for a while. Reckon a UK & IRE bid would work.

Pies and pints will be illegal. Burgers made out of crushed insects (halal, of course) will be available with your ration coupons. Football will be a non-contact sport and anyone over 40 will be classed as a pre-millenial (i.e. hooligan) and will have to report to the police before each match where they will be locked in a tram until the game is over.
Probably best if we don't get the nod.

They won't call them burgers either, it'll be a shawarma.
