With the Ritchie Humphrey's ;) thread going, I thought this could be an interesting discussion.

I was going through some old programmes the other day and came across an interview with Carl Shutt in a L**ds rag saying most of his family were Blades. So I'm led to believe he was a boyhood Blade who found himself playing for the dark side.

Carl Bradshaw is an obvious one, but I believe he went to the sty because we had no youth programme back then. This is also the reason Wilder started his career with Southampton unless I'm mistaken.

CW would've surely been in the same United youth team as Chris Marsden who was the other way inclined.

CW wasn’t in a United youth team, went to Southampton before signing for United as a pro when he was released

The OP said that there was no youth set up at BDTBL, what I meant was that CW being the same age as CM, would've been in the same youth set up as CM was, because I'm sure CM was in United's youth set up and that he wouldn't have needed to go to Southampton due to there being no youth set up at united at the time. Possibly due to other things.

Remember talking to Shutty and his old man in t' Cross Keys up Handsworth, be early '90s, and said he was a Blade but didn't broadcast it when he played at the sty as he obviously didn't want it as an issue.

There might be quite a few unitedites that have played for the pigs but the only players I can remember going to the pigs after playing for us are Bernard Shaw Simon Stainrod and Imre Varadi. No player worth a wank would go to the dark side after playing for us.

I see. CW’s dad said no when a United scout wanted to sign him at 14 or so, so there must have been a youth system in place at the time. United’s skipper at the time whose name escapes me warned CW’s dad not to bring his lad to United because the club was a mess

I'm sure I'm correct in saying United didn't have a youth set up in the 80/81 relegation season (and possibly the season before too) but started back up again in the 81/82 division four champions season. Players making the step up from that youth system would have been Gary West, Gary Brazil, Paul Smith, Paul Tomlinson and Tony Philliskirk. Off the top of my head I'd guess Wilder would have been 14 in 1982, so the youth system would have been in place then.

Sounds about right. I’m not his stalker, just writing a book :)

Wilder was 14 in 1982 so our captain at the time was Stewart Houston

Was Houston the captain in 80/81 (?), can't believe he would have advised that in '82, champions, club back on the up, money to spend, etc. I could quite easily have believed it the season before when we were relegated.

Southampton took a few kids from around here. Younger than me but I know one of them quite well. Played alongside him later after personal circumstances led to him packing in at St Mary's. Fabulous footballer, same youth group as Shearer, who he said was the best thing he'd ever seen.

Yes, captain for 1981/82 but missed the last 6 weeks of the season (injury, perhaps?). Received the 4th division trophy before the friendly against Everton. Made 34 league appearances in 1982/83 season.

David Ford is the earliest I can remember.
He was shit for us not one of Harris best signings

Ford was a cracking player in his hey day but wasn't he smashed up in a car crash or something? He came back but not quite the same player so it was a gamble that didn't quite pay off for Harris.

For Wednesday he was great he scored in the 66 cup final loss to Everton

As we seem to be mentioning players going both ways what about TC. No not that one, the moustachioed one with the curly hair.

I'll never forget the goal he scored against us in 1980. He was in a seemingly hopeless position in the corner at the Bramall Lane end surrounded by at least three United defenders when he suddenly turned and made an arcing run to the edge of the penalty area and fired one past a despairing Poole.

And yes, there were a lot of Wednesdayites in the ground that day as they all went mad around me.

West & Tomlinson probably, didn't Brazil & Philliskirk come as full professionals from other clubs? Paddy McGeeney, Lee Walshaw & Jeff Eckhardt from that era as well?

I've just checked Philliskirk came from 6th form college as an 18 yr old after his A-Levels, he'd been accepted on a course at Newcastle University, but chose us instead. He'd been released by Sunderland at 16.

Did the same with Brazil. At Palace but became a full professional with us.
