How many true club legends do we have?

I’d stick Alan Kelly in amongst this group. Probably the best keeper I’ve seen for us, played for his country with us and at the top level, captain for a time, with us 7 seasons, and the winning keeper in two memorable FA Cup quarter-final replay penalty shootouts for us at the Lane.

You can't start that list never mind finish it without Jimmy Dunne. Not content with keeping the consecutive scoring record from the pig Vardy.

"...in 1939, he was captain of an Irish side that was the last to visit Germany before Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Dunne and his team-mates were told to follow England’s example from the previous year and give the Nazi salute before their match in Bremen. Dunne refused to raise his arm and encouraged his colleagues to do the same."

"Dunne, who also coached Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians, died suddenly from a heart attack in November, 1949, aged 44. He was buried in Dublin in his Sheffield United shirt."
Stirring stuff. Superb. Thanks for posting that.

Of the original 6 posted; I’d like to see the reasons behind them being chosen as legends.

For instance - what makes Brian Deane a club legend?
Scored the goals to take us to consecutive promotions to the top division; then was our top scorer for three seasons to keep us there.
Seems good enough for me.

in the nine games he did play though he was fantastic
A legend because he had 9 good games for us. Matt Philips has about 6 good games for us...is he a legend ? What about Rob Hulse ? Carl Veart? None of these are legends. Did ok for us but, like Rees, not legends. Edwards,Deane, Morris, TC,Woody etc are legends in my lifetime because of what they brought to the club over a few years not a few months

At a pick of only one per generation, for true legends
Needham
Gillespie
Hagan
Currie
Deane (or Kelly)

I'm always tempted to say Morgan and Geary but they'd probably be limited to Blades Legends of the 21st Century (as opposed to all time). Imagine having Currie in the team today would he get to a second season, maybe a third? Before he was pounced on by a wealthier club.

Currie would obviously need a pre-season but then he’d be good to go and fitter than Ched. :)

Why would he be a legend ? He played only a handful of games for us . Yes it was very sad what happened but he isn't a legend in my opinion

You ever see him play? Some remarkable games where he just would not be beaten. Oh and grimacing through his cancer treatment looking a shadow of the man he was 12 months prior he bravely walked out with the team at Wembley. Legend in my book.

I saw him play in every game. His illness, as tragic as it was, does not make him a legend. Messrs Kelly, Tracey and Kenny are closer to that status than Rees.

The one I agree with is Kelly, although ironically if Mel hadn't had contracted cancer Kelly may never have risen to that status.

Apparently we've had legends by the score and yet we've won bugger all for almost a hundred years.

Ernest Needham
Harry Johnson
Joe Shaw
Alan Woodward
Tony Currie
Brian Deane

Does everybody agree on just those six or would you include anyone else?
I’d agree on those except Brian Deane. Loved him as a player in fact up there as one of the best but not a legend relative to Sheffield Inited history.

I’d add Doc Pace, Fatty Foulkes and I’m sure there’s others from our earlier history I’ve not mentioned.

The thing is we’re talking true club legends throughout our history and not just great players we’ve seen in our lifetime.

Not really, but we have had some who could truly be called legends because they were truly great players in the game at the time. We’ve had a few despite our poor success rate.

Deano scored the first goal of the premier league era so I’d say he’s a legend and is definitely a big part of our history.
