The number 12 trialist really is struggling. Looks totally lost out there up to now.

A proper shift from the boys tonight.

I just think it is very difficult for the players when a couple of new trialists come in and play in such a big game and they are clearly not good enough.
We also missed Semple with his power, size and his distribution from the back.

Thought Gilmour and Slater put a massive amount of effort tonight.

Thought Swansea were the better side but also looked a good couple of years older mostly, Ty Smith isolated on his own for the most part, for me it showed the limitations of some of our players thought Doherty played well and was the only one who tried to play out from the back and into the midfield. Poor mistake for the first and dubious free kick for the second, well executed mind, 2nd half we looked much better and had a real goal shame Gilmour couldn’t get more on the header, Stevie Mallon flatters to deceive for me very much a luxury player and more often than not a luxury we can’t afford

The Dutch winger who got their 3rd is closer in age to Jack O'Connell and 3 years older than David Brooks. The vast majority of ours were U18.

I was impressed with both of them and it looks like there's a player in Doherty.
I thought Regan Slater was a little below his usual standard tonight. IMHO it is easier for box to box midfield players like Slater & Gilmour to stand out at this level, as they see so much of the ball. Both are a joy to watch. Doherty is intriguing. Historically a creative, in the hole, attacking midfielder. He's been popping up in the back three of late. Even in the centre. He is great positionally. Reads the game well. And has become a "tidy things up nicely" defender.

The bottom has fallen out of the market for my U23 reports. As people can watch them on the internet & report in real time, while I'm wasting my life in a South Wales MicroBrewery somewhere.

Anyway. Beaten by a better side. Selection disrupted at the end of the season. Some right shifts though. And Boss Brewery Bar, in the shadow of the Liberty Stadium. My Blog

This has been my point for a while in that for some reason many people think that if a youngster is not ready to play in the first team at 19 or 20 then they won’t be good enough !!!
Swansea’s keeper was 19 and they thought it was amazing that he had played 10 games for the 23s.
Some of our 18 year old have racked up close to 50 games at under 23s and we don’t bat an eye.

Make no mistake, we have Graham, Semple, Gilmour, Slater, Smith who in my opinion at 18/19 years old have a real chance.

Could Semple be making the first team bench today?
Would be good to see, surely some reason for him missing out last night

Sadly a small injury prevented him playing last night.
I heard he would gladly have played with a painkilling injection but the club said no.

In any case CW is not one for sentiment. He would exhaust the full first team squad before a 23s player was given a chance.

That’s how he works and must be respected.

I don't care what is reported by others I rely on your blog that never fails to report honestly on the youngsters games. I agree with your analysis on the purpose of the 23s but it is a shame the club don't value end of season important games.

Wilder has a squad of players who fill every position in the team.

Before a 23s player in a certain position is played he will use his first team squad. None of the 23s will jump the pecking order throughout a season.

If a 23s player is deemed good enough he will be introduced to the first team squad in the Summer.

Brooke’s was excellent last season and was never introduced until preseason.

Slater was used this season as the other centre mids were not available.

So my point is quite straight forward, if Semple, Smith, Slater etc are deemed good enough they will not jump ahead of Heneghan, Caruthers, Wilson mid season.

I have no problem with that at all. It shows loyalty to his first team squad and does not introduce the youngsters due to sentiment.

That makes sense, I wasn't aware there was such a rigid pecking order in place.

Don't particularly agree with it like.

If it is not he case we should expect to see a couple on the bench next week as mathematically there is nothing to play for.

Not the end of the world mind

I hope so, would be nice to see if any can offer us something different.
