I was just reminded on twitter by dingledog that a year ago today we celebrated down at MK Dons with Champers, having witnessed another win.

Today and the last few weeks we've looked knackered and just haven't done the business to take us into the play offs. December, Jan and Feb were the times to make the real push and we just weren't able to keep pace with the top 2 and as its turned out, the top 6.

We still might make the play offs but looking at the players, the summer can't come soon enough. They've had two fantastic seasons and I'm proud of them.

I don't really care about the board room, its not something we'll ever know enough about and i think either way, we're in good hands with the prince and or McCabe. We don't need money to succeed, we need the spirit on the last two seasons and that runs from the stands to the boardroom.

We're still on the verge of something fantastic at our club. We've come a long way in a year and the bitter piggies have been all over facebook tonight, thankfully i screen shot a few conversations in august and its just come back to bite them in the backside, yet again.

We're in a much better position than our neighbours!

Heres to the transition and making more memories like we did a year ago

Well said, my sentiments exactly UTB

I didn't, I don't drink any old shit and they didn't have any of my tastes :D

I've been critical today but i'm at ease with the season now and whilst we haven't been good enough for the top 6 we have still had a much more enjoyable season than most other clubs in England. We were expected to be in a relegation fight yet somehow led the table at one stage. Then we were predicted to totally fall off after out 10 game winless streak but managed to get ourselves back into contention and only today was the final nail really hit in.

It might have helped my mood that I have just compiled the pre season predictions from the Owlstalk lot. We have certainly exceeded one set of fans expectations this season let's put it that way

You been on the sherry today?

Lager and a hipster beer, discounting the 'trooper' in Derby, which might as well have been scooped from the urinals.
I knew it wasn't worth leaving the room, as the hotel wasn't stocked :D

We've been good enough performance wise, like raul said on another thread, we've not had many games where you've walked away bemoaning the performance, but the results speak for themselves and we've not quite had enough at either end.

Plenty to build on

I have come away so many times this season saying "We are so close to being a top side" then we randomly put in these ridiculous displays like today that frustrate the hell out of me. I think the mentality is a big factor.

I’ve just counted 5 performances where we’ve just not turned up this season - qpr, Hull, Preston, Barnsley and Birmingham (all away)

There’s obviously other games we’ve lost, but I don’t think we’ve been shite in those games even if we gave away daft goals etc

In 44 games you’ve got to be happy with that

We've not, my overriding feelings are that I'd have taken it in pre-season but that we've wasted a huge opportunity.

I don’t feel it’s a wasted opportunity, I think we’ve perhaps pushed ourselves as far as we could go physically and mentally with the squad size and depth we have

Build on this and I think that’s the opportunity.

You are probably correct, but we've dropped enough points from positions of strength and conceded goals that aren't well worked or quality, more sloppy.

Had we not shot ourselves in the foot doing that, we'd have been right there.

I guess the argument is, that we shouldn't have been good enough to do that... But we could have been.

As Fergie used to say, this is squeaky bum time.

When it's mattered, the fact that this has been the first season at this level for most of our players, and more importantly our manager, this has been decisive. We've just not had the nous to close out (important) games when it mattered. How we struggled to see it out against the 10 men of Middlesbrough summed up our season to me. Hammered them first half, but tried our best to throw it away as the game dragged on...

Next year we'll have Course & Distance so we'll have a much better appreciation of what's required.

We not quite had enough to go all the way but from the bits I've seen the championship is a different animal to the last time we were here.

A group of nomark league one players have outplayed so many teams this season that there should be a certain amount of embarrassment at these big spending clubs.

We are going to be disappointed the t we've come up a bit short in the end but some of the stuff written is rubbish and reactionary.

We go again next year and see where it takes us.

Yeah I think that recently we’ve probably dropped more points and not had enough to pull ourselves out of it, whereas earlier in the season we did... 24th September being a fabulous example

It only feels a waste because we got off to a flying start, highs and lows in form all average out over the season so I I'm happy with where we've turned out, plus the opportunity isn't wasted yet, still 2 games to go (even if it is a very slim chance).

I couldn't have said it better myself. The main thing that we've lacked this season is strength in depth and I'm certain that wilder will sort it.
I've renewed my season ticket so I'm ready for whatever next season no matter what happens. UTB

The problem is that over-achievement in football only lifts expectations in the eyes of too many.

The season after Leiciester pulled off the biggest sporting upset of all time their fans were calling for the manager's head for not repeating the miracle.

Somewhere along the line us hitting the play-offs became an expectation when the goal at the start of it was survival by any means necessary.

Today was a shit game. This was a fantastic season.

'tis football, Swiss. On 21st April 2012 we played at MKD. With just three games left, we were closing in on promotion. What could possibly go wrong.

We've had six years of playing the likes of Yeovil, Stevenage, Crawley, Fleetwood etc. and a number of shite managers.

Times are good!

You've hit upon an historically established point PPC - when a promoted club arrives in the division above, they have the previous season's record to reflect upon, and when reality strikes, as in it's sometimes not easy to go on unbeaten runs and that conceding goals with what was once a watertight defence, hits some supporter like a closing door they failed to see - well at the season's beginning I seem to recall that quite a few supporters on this forum stating they'd be happy to regard this season as a success if we finished above wendy. The fact that we momentarily came close to achieving an automatic promotion place, and then were would actually achieve this term.

We're in far better shape than I can recall for over a decade, possibly longer. Of course the squad needs improving (tell me a club that doesn't share this ongoing problem?), but this is the best squad we've had in a long time, and it will only improve as long as Wilder and Knill remain at this club. Whether the support is there from the owners is another question.

I think the feeling amongst many supporters is that to come so close to a promotion position, but to not give ourselves the best possible chance to compete with this division's more ambitious clubs, is what irks and annoys. Most things are in place, apart from a board with the desire to do their part and provide the necessary resources to make promotion a realistic possibility. It's this that concerns many on here. My personal take is that McCabe tried hard to get a partner who would understand what was needed to take us forward. It's great that the bills get paid, but we simply can't offer the manager the type of budgets that would make the difference to our chances of securing promotion. Whatever the Prince has done, his willingness to engage with the supporters isn't one of his standout memories.

Sorry mate. The boardroom situation will define next season, and if it fucks up our first proper step forward for years then a good proportion of our fans will be pissed off, not to mention some of the playing and coaching staff.

Sometimes I think that the nature of football and its finances blind supporters.

You often read on here along the lines if "there better be more than £x million available"

It's almost like manopoly money, but it has to come from somewhere. Remember when Shearer was the first 15m player? That now gets you a championship bench warmer.

McCabe doesn't have the spending power to compete, does the Prince? Id say its unlikely at this point unless he has other backers behind him.

We still have to cut our cloth, but at least we do have a manager who can spot a bargain he will get some wrong but I fancy him to improve us rather than not.

All true and correct mate - my question regarding the Prince though is what promises were made before McCabe agreed o give 50% of the club to this man? I hope I'm wrong, but my gut feeling is that it was a marriage made out of necessity, but that only one partner entered into it with a clear and transparent view of what would be needed to take us forward.

We don't need money to succeed

The only bit I disagree with. That’s the one thing you need in football now above all else.

Saying that, it depends on what your measure of success is. If success is staying where we are then yes, or at least we MIGHT not need money.....for now.

Good word is 'transition' and Wilder's project is exactly that - and only part way through.

I think he is surprised and disappointed with the lack of progress since January though, after the significant expenditure.

Dust down, recharge the batteries and go again. Project still on track and an upward curve.

Of course, if you take it out of the context of the sentence and in isolation, the meaning of what i was saying is very different.

The point was that we haven't got where we have done through money, but via other means.

Yeah its noticeable that we are in that transition process now. Wilder definitely expected the fitness levels to carry us through all season as he said that in August. In reality, he acknowledged after yesterdays game that players like JOC are out on their feet.

So perhaps the natural transition is on hold until the summer, but its been slowly coming over the last few months.
