7 to go. Will Wilder be brave?

Half -time tonight.

Unleash the power of Holmes with Duffy and then Brooks if needed last 15 mins.

Boro have to be respected 1st half but shit or bust at half-time.

7 games to go and 4 of them against teams hoping to sneak into that 6th league position.

There were positive signs of a return to form at Brentford and the players were 'at it' again but I sense we need to really kick-on somehow.

Our strikers are not very hot at present and we are short of what you might call 'heroes' these days.

Wilder needs one or two players to get on hot streaks and that's all we need actually. I forecast we will get 14 points from the 21 remaining but do we need more? We are vying with 5 other teams for 2 places and have to finish 1st or 2nd in that mini-league within the league. None of the teams looks clear favourites to me, far from it, anything can happen.

Within the 3-5-2 'die that's cast' it's perfectly possible for Clarke and/or Sharp to get back on track. It's possible for any one of Duffy, Holmes and Brooks to get inspired and see us over the line.

My fear is that we will fall just short even though only Millwall can be said to be flying at present.

What should Wilder do?

I fear our wing-backs in the 3-5-2 are not productive enough for a big finish to the season. Does our manager select different wing-backs? Change to 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-5-1? If not from the start of games, maybe as an early 'Plan B'?

History can be in the making. Legends can be born hereon-in. If we don't step up somehow we will just miss out. Does the manager 'stick or twist'; stick and hope or twist and gamble, which is what any significant change would be, a gamble.

I worship our manager but I have to reflect on my o.p. to say that he has not changed enough to alter the course of our season in the run-in.

Leaving things as they were would have likely produced 'more of the same' and not quite enough.

He has played Brooks from the start since the date of the o.p. and that was significant and a brave move. However it's not been enough.

I will not presume to know the answers but some options:

Change system. 4-5-1. 4-4-2. 4-2-3-1. 4-3-3.

And / or Drop Stevens.

Play Duffy with Brooks.

Play Holmes.

Drop. Clarke and play Sharp or Wilson.

It's not too late but we seriously need a stimulus from somewhere, especially the two away games. Performances away from home can be inexplicably flat.

The 3-5-2 has just allowed to outplay Brentford, Cardiff, and Middlesboro, three of the better teams in the division. That we didn't get 9 points from those games was due to a slight lack of quality at either end of the pitch, which is something Wilder can't alter.

Panicked tweaking of the formation won't get us anywhere.

Well said but the conundrum is that we only have 6 points from 4 games since the o.p. posed the question and we are behind tbe pace unless we win the last 3 games now. 'More of the same' might get us 9 points and is the safer option but recent results make it unlikely. Preston will be another challenge like Millwall.

I can"t help but think the players need something fresh to get their teeth into. If we do make the play-offs will 'more of the same' be enough?

I have to say that (IMO) playing Brookes (which most including me wanted to see) has been a problem to us in the last few weeks. The problem being that he's simply not a striker and does not get into the box and gamble which the likes of Sharp (and even Wilson) would do naturally. One classic against Millwall in the first half when Clarke twisted past a defender on the goaline on the left edge of the box, and put a superb ball across the 6 yard box but Brookes wasn't even in the area. I'm all for playing him but as a striker (or a just behind a single striker) just doesn't work for me and I think CW has this wrong.

Agree 100% He's a 'no.10' as is Duffy, as is Holmes. Play two of them perhaps with Wilson or Clarke as the lone striker.

Fleck, Duffy, Brooks can all get right up there whenever they want as long as just the one of them keeps some element of cover.

Sorry, I just don't think there's a magic bullet in our situation. I think we rise or fall based on the system that has served us remarkably well for more than 18 months; seems to me the most likely outcome of rolling the dice with a new system at this point would be losing all three of our remaining games and ending the season with a whimper. We're all desperate to make the plays offs but personally I'm hoping calmer heads prevail in the dressing room and Wilder sticks with what we know (mostly) works.

If we get there, it will be because our strikers learn to put away their chances and our defenders learn to concentrate.

Apart from Brooks we haven’t really got the personnel to be brave or different. Leonard and Holmes are variations on what we’ve already got and Wilson has been rubbish, injured or both.

This transfer window is perhaps the least we’ve moaned for years, but in hindsight it was pretty poor on the recruitment front, granted we kept key players.

Freeman if fit at left wing back would be my alternation for the last 3 games. His nous of getting in the box, scoring goals could be invaluable. I know it's his wrong side but plenty of full backs can play wrong side.

We wouldn't be losing much in dropping Stevens the way he's playing at the moment.

Most will know I have had some interaction with what I call 'sharks' and I've battled with them a fair bit.

Recently an un-named poster jided me by saying ' you do have a reputation to keep after all' and the penny dropped that these trolls operate within their own spheres and play up to each other, without seeing what goes on within sincere forum members' circles.

Accordingly, I hope ypu don't mind me thanking you publicly for contributing to the debate on this excellent thread. This is the forum they do not see:

Thanks Blades. Bit of a point I'm making.

Debate is King. Not posters and 'reputations'. By the way I have just the 5 Sharks on my list and yet they have so much to say for themselves on here, mostly unchallenged.

I read it wrong. You said "these trolls" and then named a bunch of us..

TBH, I do troll people sometimes. Mainly because they deserve it but also because i'm a sarcastic prick

Matt . You are not the only one who cannot read the words in posts. Happens all the time. o_O

Congratulations guys, I'm made up

Good reply, we just need a No 9 to play with either Billy or Clarke.

Not at all sure Sharp or Clarke work that well in partnerships.

I recall Sharp and Keogh at Scunny long ago but no others. They were red-hot but only in L1.

Don't know enough about Clarke. Recall him in his element at Bury when they played here . Not much else, though I do think he is a big 'team player'.

For mature strikers you can usually recall more partnerships.

Looking back his other best spell was at Coventry where he played in tandem with Callum Wilson and both were prolific.

Whilst both have done well I'm not sure Billy and Clarke work as a partnership and thats our biggest problem.
Score more and the defence takes care of itself?

We need a scary No9.

Scary and pacy. Too late for this season though.

Hanson was scary..

Can't imagine which 'shark' was up at 5.39 a.m. Must have been important. Must have had to wait a while for all the 'shark likes' on this occasion.
