OK so I'm worried

I've been saying for a while that we're not ready and that I don't think going up is necessarily a good thing. I think we'll miss out anyway, but what am I afraid of. If we get promoted we make 100 million pounds just for finishing bottom. Take the money, the relegation and come back next time stronger that seems and may be a good argument and I understand people making it but it worries me. Firstly how much off that money will be left? I think if we are lucky we might have ten players who can step up and do a job in the top division. Honestly I think we only have five. So what do we do, spend a minimum of 100 million on players to keep us up. Rely on Chris finding good value gems in the lower divisions, "cos you don't need to spend that much." It is easy to say take the relegation and come back stronger, that's what I would do. I would keep Chris, keep investing try to keep building but guess what I'm not in charge and if we are bottom at christmas are we confident that Chris doesn't get sacked, The club don't panic buy. We don't get saddled with a wage bill like Sunderland. So you make deals with players to take a pay cut after relegation, except what player good enough to perhaps save the club comes at Christmas and takes that deal.
I think we buy 3 or 4, I know i'm dreaming, quality players over the summer then if we go up the surgery we need is serious but potentially survivable. The last time we came down with parachute payments they were nothing like as much as they are now, but guess what top players cost much much less than they do now and the wages they are paid are ridiculous. Last time we appointed the wrong man and wasted the parachute payments. Call me a small time blade all you like call me negative and a doommonger but accept my concerns are real and motivated by both love for this club and experience of mistakes we have made in the past.

there are quite a few teams in the Prem with one or 2 good ish players and the rest ok ish/poor - (just because they command big fees and wages doesnt mean they are world beaters ) similar to that of the top of the Champ

if this team now went up and we didnt buy anyone (which wouldn't happen ) i still think we would give allot of teams a good go ! especially early doors, similar to this season as would suprise allot of them

look at Burnely , from memory they didnt go mad on buying new players, just got good ones in as and when but didnt upset the applecart of the squad , have a great spirit and a great manager and are will finish top 8 this year !
could add Bournmouth to that mould also who are having another great go this year

The fact that other clubs are getting relegated with huge parachute payments is a reason to get promoted as soon as possible.

The imbalance of financial power in the 2nd division created by payments to recently relegated clubs is only going to grow. The effect will be that unless a rich benefactor comes into play, you'll have a two-tier Championship. Essentially a franchise set-up in all but name where smaller clubs have very slim prospect of success.

I've little desire to be in the Premiership per se, but we do need to be on the right side of that divide.

Burnley in some ways support my argument they kept Sean Dyche despite 2 relegations and have been rewarded for their faith, that's what I would hope we would do, my fear is we act differently. Huddersfield have done really well, helped no end by the implosion of 3 teams below them that would have expected to be much higher

Burnley are a very good example. Not so sure Bournemouth are, they are backed by a group that could buy and sell Kev & the Prince many times over. I do like Eddie Howe though, good manager.

I think it's all moot because we probably won't make the play-offs and we're even less likely to win them if we do.

The rest is all a bit daft to me. The one thing this club needs right now is the money to compete in the transfer window. Going up, even if followed by coming back down, gives us that money. Whether we use it well is another question, but it would instantly give us far beyond the influx of money that another investor like the Prince would.

We learned a dozen years ago, if watching other teams weren't already enough, that having a season in the Premiership doesn't secure you forever more. You're always a few bad signings and a couple of bad managers away from falling even further. Still, it's silly to try and argue that a gain of a couple of hundred million would be anything close to a bad thing.

Herein lies the fallacy. Yes, it's possible that we would screw things up if we went up. But it's equally possible that we screw things up even if we DON'T go up.

Wednesday were on the brink of promotion via the play-offs last year. Now they're down in the bottom half. Same for Reading. Either could, if things continue, slip even further next year.

Staying in this division isn't a guarantee of being better next year, and so you might as well take the short term success that comes with a £200m bonus and trips to play some of the best teams in Europe.

Lots of good points none of which I disagree with, apart from harry who doesn't make any points. you may be right I as a United fan for a very long time tend to expect things to go tits up. My problem is with the assumption that the money makes everything else Ok. I want to keep the manager, i want to keep the team spirit, i want to feel that the players are playing for the shirt as well as the wage packet I know that's naive I just think another season building is no bad thing. pokerblade is right to say it can go just as wrong if we stay where we are, as it stands I expect us to find it harder next season without decent investment in players in the summer. last time we went straight from league 1 to the premier league. I know they weren't called that then, we had Deane and Agana what would they cost now? that's why I don't necessarily think 200 million lasts as long as people think it does. Is the gap huge between the have's and the have nots yes, will it get bigger? yes that is the best reason to go up no doubt about it. It is perhaps saddest of all that that has become the main driving force behind promotion, not the glory not the fantastic occasions but the money.

To put it another way, when you reach a certain age, the pessimism of being a Blade does not disappear, as it is too deeply ingrained, but you do start to enjoy the individual matches more, and worry less about potential long-term problems. Worrying about us getting promoted and then making a mess of it is for now well down my list of concerns; but no doubt if we did get promoted, I would be convinced that relegation would follow.
