Wilder says they wanted it more

Whose fault was the poor recruitment in January? Wilder got 2 players who he’s been after since last summer and we screwed up on the Wilson signing but only because the other strikers have stopped scoring has this become an issue. We also signed a solid but unspectacular midfielder.

I think we recruited ok but not great, buying a goal scorer for the Championship would have cost between £3m and £10m and I personally wouldn’t know where to start to find a player who is good enough and also fits within the ethos of the squad.

Slightly worrying times ahead and entering a critical four months for the club. I'd love us to make the play offs, but if we don't it's vital that we get some kind of consistency/form back in the last 5 matches and then address squad issues in a good frame of mind & look forwards to the start of next season. What we don't want to do is lose the last 5 games, finish the season in an acrimonious way and end up with knee jerk squad changes and panic.

Going into the pre season on relegation form will not make for a good summer as you say. “Momentum” was seen as an insult earlier in the season but the fact is we had some and now we’ve got none. We need 3 wins from the last few games to halt the slide and give hope into next season.

Then we need a considered and we’ll funded (but not OTT) approach to building a Championship squad. I’d take mid table next season if it means a good solid squad that we can build on. Keep around 7/8 of the current squad as players to build with and add as required. Unfortunately we all know that this won’t be the case and it will be a case of 3 or 4 additions that are probably no better than we have already. Hopefully Coutts return is a positive for next season as well.

Coutts will be like a new signing but as good as he is it's asking a lot for him to turn the fortunes of the team. We don't need a total clear out but we do need to replace about half of the first team to progress and I can't see that happening

Yea starting with the garbage he brought in in the window

Nah.

We buy players who are young enough to develop into what we need because we can't afford the finished player. Holmes doesn't fall into that category but Leonard and Evans do. They could be key players this time next year.

If we measure our midfielders by Coutts' early season standards then we'll never find a replacement without £5m to spend on one player.

99.9% of the time I think Wilder tells it how it is in his interviews. There's maybe been one game when I've actually wondered if he was at the same game, something I wondered on a weekly basis with Adkins. He went with the same team that did so well v Cardiff because they played so well and for whatever reason, we were not at the races so he did the right thing and changed it quite quickly.

Having then played them off the park and dominated possession for most of the 2nd half, we then give away two cheap goals and they win the game. It's as simple as that really. Must be incredibly frustrating for the management team at the moment as well as us fans.

As the great Brian Clough said, it's not tactics and formation that win or lose football matches, it's players.

Are we being realistic here? Won the league last year in a canter and have 60 odd points with 5 games still to go. We are not bleedin Barcelona you know. Our recent form is not as bad as the results due to loads of bad finishing and we could have been 5/6 points better off over the last few games and you know what?.....the mood on here would have been very different.

So it's not the fact they're not good enough, it's that they now know they're not good enough?
Its an interesting conundrum either way. From a coaching point of view I wouldn’t have told my players that they’re Not good enough. I see why he said what he did (for the reaction) but it’s up for debate as to whether it’s backfired or not

Excellent interview by a manager who knows his stuff.

4500 x £36 a pop he said. Shpuld have sent them home happy.

He eats, drinks and sleeps the job and the club and the supporters.

We don't need a big cull this summer, I agree with Wilder that we are a good team.

We just need 3 maybe 4 players to improve what we've got already. Carefully chosen players with quality. Our manager will not be out with a big shopping list, no need for numbers, just quality. Therefore any budget can be carefully targeted in 3 positions, maybe 4.

"Everyone's shit".

Except Coutts, who was shit, now we can't wait for him to come back.

Anyone think there might be a lesson there somewhere?

Yep. If sign crocks and have to wait one and a half seasons for them to come good, we are going to have a tough season next year.

You need to up your dosage.
Let's just say after the Burton game in November we had 36pts from 17 games ( 2.11 pts per game) the 24 games after that gave us 26pts ( 1.08 pts per game) do you see where this is going ? Over a season the present level of form would not get us 50 pts.
Maybe you need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Don't think Moore deserves that Super Pig but Jamal has had a part to play with his ridiculous sending off v Brentford. Players getting sent off needlessly puts my teeth on edge.

When Blackman and the Brentford lad got sent off, the TV commentators went with the usual script - 'You can't raise your hands, or you're going to get a red card'. Unless you're Harry Maguire, it's Leicester and the BBC's love-child (Linker) supports them. (v Newcastle's Gayle yesterday).

We need to keep a bit of perspective here. We could and should have won the last three games but didn't because we are not clinical enough in the final third, Yes the strikers do miss chances but will still get 30 goals plus between them this season. The bigger problem is we take to long and make poor decisions when in good positions. Also we don't shoot enough and a priority for me is finding someone who can shoot from outside the box. Not sure anyone has the power or confidence to do this. Whatever happens over the next few games this will have been a good season and exceeded initial expectations. Yes we have run out of steam a bit but with a few tweaks to the squalid I see no reason why we cannot improve next season. No reason to rip the squad apart and start again as some would have you believe.

We have some players in our squad who have to rely on hard work to compensate for their lack of technical ability. This is not a criticism but a statement of fact due to us having to shop in the bargain basements.
Our game relies on high tempo, pressing and lots of movement. Unfortunately the natural development of this as the season progressed is that the players have got tired; coinciding with our drop off in results but not the way we want to play.
Wilder knows this and subsequently refers to it as his missing link and hopes he will be able to bring in the four or more “quality” players he needs to make the step up.
In addition the last three games could quite easily have yielded an additional four, five or seven points which would have seen us in the play off positions.
Surely reasons to be positive!
