I find it very sad that Warnock gets such stick on here and from a lot of Blades in general. He annoyed and frustrated me during his time with us but also delivered some great times. Some of the criticisms seem to be as follows:
He flirted with managing Wednesday and went for an interview for a different job whilst managing us, despite being a "big Blade" - well so what, if he wasn't a Blade, would it matter as much? Why does (his claim to) him being a Blade go against him? Brian Deane buggered off to Benfica instead of staying with us and helping us get promotion, but I don't see him getting pelters - the opposite, in fact. Harry Bassett actually came out with the M word, yet he doesn't get the sort of hatred that gets aimed Warnock's way. Is it because they aren't Blades?
He changes his story, gripes about his treatment/contract/deal, talks more about the financial backing, or lack of, during his time with us - it's obvious to me that he was and still is upset at the way he was treated, during his time and especially at the end. The fact that he still goes on about it after all these years says it matters a lot to him; he can't leave it alone. That tells me he is more of a Blade than some say he is. It also explains why the stuff he says doesn't always stack up. I have some sympathy, I never felt he was fully backed in either division and felt McCabe wanted him out from at least the promotion season if not before. However, we shouldn't get upset about it everytime he comes out with another little dig.
He is his own biggest fan, me me me - to be honest, why does that bother anyone? Football is full of massive egos and if his bothers you, wait till we get into the PL and start signing players who won't even remember the club's name during interviews. Especially when we start bringing the foreigners in, as everyone seems to want, some of them really don't believe the world exists beyond three feet of their own nose. Warnock has a big ego. It's part of what makes him tick.
His teams play anti-football / hoof / whatever you want to call it - true, but at the time we didn't have the money to afford the more technical players. When I see his teams (like on the box now) I am glad we have Wilder, but it can't be denied that it can be effective and he's good at what he does. Currently, his agricultural football is trumping several slick, footballing teams playing the beautiful game. As long as that continues, he will be given contracts.
He was out of his depth in the PL - yes, he was. But that's not something to blame him for, just like you shouldn't blame players when they reach their level. It's the way it is. We could have sacked him. We didn't. Also, I think he has matured and learnt, he may do a much better job with Cardiff if they go up.
He spunked the money on crap players - name a manager who hasn't. Again, at any point, we could have moved him out and brought in someone we thought could do a better job. It seemed convenient to McCabe to keep him and let him buy cheap players by the bucket load in the hope of finding a diamond. He proved that he wasn't good with a cheque book, but again, that might be different now.
He has a big nose - well so have I, so fuck off.
A bit more long winded than I'd planned, but can't people just try and get a little less wound up by his trademark comments? It's not like we don't know what's coming when he opens his mouth. And can't we at least acknowledge he gave us some good times? In all my years watching, not many managers have given us good times to remember, but he gave us quite a few.
