Far from dispirited, I was very proud of what I witnessed last night.

In previous games against the top teams we’ve shown what most would perceive to be limitations.

Wolves and Fulham were both lessons in quality and to be fair, we looked miles off.

Last night was totally different.

We bossed the game and were undone by a last gasp Hail Mary from a team clearly with the rub of the green on their side. It also highlighted with the fluidity of our play that the team benefits from Brooks or Duffy floating, providing the bridge between midfield and attack.

Yes, we missed chances again but whilst we were good against Brentford there were no attritional periods of note in this one. We were excellent throughout. Hitting the post and having a decent pen shout were sickeners but that performance breeds hope.

Hopefully Leon has his confidence back too.

We played the team pushing for 1st and dismantled them. Just that coup de grace eluded us.

Repeat that 6 times and none of the remaining opposition will live with that.

Someone is going to get a pasting soon!!!

As an aside to that, should we admire what Cardiff have achieved with a fraction of the talent/outlay of Fulham or Wolves?

Or have they actually spent good money, and is their atrocious football a needless antic?

All 3 Cardiff Wolves and Fulham have done us over once ,in the other game we have played really well ,take CCV out of the first Fulham game and we have done almost the same to all 3 as they have done to us. We aren't too far away and the progress we have made this season is way ahead of what should be expected.

Felt gutted last night but now the dust has settled. Let’s be honest, there are plenty of positives.

1: Remember we had no Duffy and have generally struggled without him
But young Lundstrum is starting to assert him self and make a big difference. He looks a really good buy.
In fact our midfield 3 of Lundstrum, Fleck and Evans looks an impressive unit.

2: The Clarke- Brooks partnership looked really good.
Think Brooks had a poorish game by his high standards but his clever movement caused problems for Cardiff all night
And Leon’s clever link play shows he’s more than just a finisher.

3: We have 2 good goalies, prefer Blackman but Moore is also good enough.

4: The wingbacks Baldock and Stevens were full of energy and looked back to their best.

5: Superb backing by the Kop, the big match atmosphere was back and I’m looking forward to to Boro and Millwall home games.

Cardiff players were making noises about the pitch and claiming they were much better in the second half and deserved something.

Hmm. Only one team were capable of passing the ball around out there, only one team was going forward and creating chances, and it certainly wasn't them.

Agree and I too am immensely proud. Not just about last night but the season as a whole. Disregarding the first four results (when league positions can fluctuate wildly) we've been in the top half of the table all season. Realistically, the lowest we can finish is 11th. Only Fulham (so far) have done the double over us and we haven't been 'mullered' by anybody, score-wise.

A perfect season of consolidation in a higher level for a team that hasn't really changed since we stormed Division One. No players sold, great crowds a superb manager and no significant spending.

Bring on 2018-19!

Did we re-lay the pitch at half time? That must have passed me by. :)

I had a quick look on *wlstalk last night and there was a thread on there saying how terrible our Desso looked compared to theirs.

Is there any truth in that or is is it the usual delusional stuff making no allowance for the tonnes of snow that had to be removed and the subsequent deluge in the hours before kick off?

delusional. only the fact that we have such a good pitch allowed the game to go ahead at all

Well now our crowds are beating theirs and we are out sight in the league table, we have better shirts and play better football, our ground makes theirs look like a council tip, the only straws they have left to clutch at are the ones growing in their stadium.

If, if we make 5th or 6th, who would you feel confident in playing again? I still don't fancy playing Fulham, however I do think we are better than that bunch of hoofers/foulers we played last night, I certainly don't fear them, I was expecting more from them. Our season isn't over yet!

us vs Fulham .. play off final. we win. they bottle it like last season.

Good performance, we were the better team and we didn't win, again.

It's not the end of the world, but it doesn't make me immensely proud. I wouldn't be happy with being that side who everyone applauds for their great football but who never threaten to do anything.

At this stage it's an issue I can understand, as it's our first season back, and we're going to undergo a gradual improvement. We don't yet have the quality to consistently put several goals past our opponents.

We need to make sure we carry on improving, and with Wilder I think we will. If we become a footballing version of Ipswich though, it'll be a bit shithouse.

I've just been to the Lane buying tickets, and in the car park are large piles of snow covered in grass, so presumably the machinery used to shift the snow did damage to the pitch. It's the first time the Desso has looked dodgy, and had patches where the ball didn't bounce.

One minute they're complaining about a game at the new Baseball being called because of the weather and the next they're complaining about our pitch when we made all the effort to get the game played.

BTW I'm extremely proud as well.

As the league table suggests (table doesn't lie as the saying goes), we've been a better than average Championship side this season. I've been generally impressed by the way we've established ourselves and obviously some of our performances have been outstanding. You'd worry if we had been playing well and not getting results but we've looked very comfortable in this league, despite warnings that we were going to struggle.

It would be nice to think that we could improve in some areas and be challenging automatic and play-off positions next season.

Losing 3-0 at home to Southend at the beginning of Wilder's reign seems like a lifetime ago.

It's another game where we didn't take our chances, and getting hit by a 90th minute equaliser always stings. The positive is that what I didn't want was for the season to fade out with us thinking the first half of it was a fluke, or momentum, or whatever. Last night was one of the best shows of the season and in poor conditions for flowing football. That's the kind of football that put 100 points on the board, and the kind of football that had all the pundits raving about Sheffield United. To see that with Duffy out, Coutts still out, Brooks not fully fit, and with the tired legs in our side, that we're capable of making a very strong Cardiff side look poor means a lot.

It wasn’t long ago when many said that we are too reliant in Duffy to create chances, without him we’re doomed. So it’s fantastic to see us play like last season with Duffy or Coutts.

I was really impressed with the midfield of Fleck, Lundstrum and Evans.
Also thought the forward partnership of Brooks and Leon looked really good too.

Logic suggests we should perform even better in these final matches, so still quite optimistic.

There was a point in the second half where we was really going for it, quick throw ins, free kicks, job lot. Brilliant to see that desire and attitude.

I agree and that's why I'm optimistic after last night, we outplayed a physical side who are clear 2nd and had too pump it into the box to get something from us. We looked like a team that could end up in the play offs. The playoffs are a lottery so don't expect us to win them but it would be great to get there in our first season back.

We can check their pitch out next time they're on t'telly ....... :D

The channel 5 highlights program summed it up for me. They're talking about us like we're an established championship side like derby,Preston ect. They then say we've only just been promoted from league 1 but are still in the hunt for a playoff place and a possible 2 promotions in 2 seasons. I'm really proud of what wilder has achieved this season no matter what happens!!. UTB

Reading all these comments has made me feel better then I did last night and this morning. The long and short of it is to look how far since the start of last season we have come. I never believed Wilder would take us up in the first season after the failures that came before him.
We are still there or there abouts and I'm more than happy with that ..... UTB
