The Star understands that discreet negotiations have taken place between high-ranking members of United's staff and their counterparts at Newcastle where discontent at events off the pitch is fast approaching crisis point. However, sources in the North-East have stressed that despite a crippling £65m a year wage bill, out-goings are unlikely until a takeover is completed.

Any clues?

I read that, but in that bit says nothing about a loan specifically from Newcastle, so could be a permanent transfer.

Not sure who we'd want. Butt, Viduka, Smith god knows. They'd all want mega wages!

Lovenkrands.

Out of them I would take Smith every time, but I doubt we could afford any of them.

good shout Foxy.

Weren't we linked with him before he went there in January?

Can't possibly comment on whether or not a South Yorkshire team had lodged a firm interest and had 2nd dibs on him if he didn't sign for then-premiership Newcastle. ;)

Perfect! We'll sign them all then and in 6 mths time we'll sell them saying that we can't afford the wages and we couldn't refuse the offers for them to play PL footy again!

Says on Wikipedia that Lovenkrands is currently "without a club".
I'd definately take him if he's on a free.

A loan? Could be a keeper!

As in 'one that we might keep' or 'goal keeper'? Pedentry is alive and well in West Yorkshire SEB. Unfortunalty as a product of the West Riding County Councils education system in the 1960's I cant always spell everything correctly.:D:D:D

 What?!? Like Gary Glitter!!!!!!???!!! :D

Sheffield United could be set to take advantage of Newcastle United's struggling financial situation by swooping for one of their players in a loan move.

Kevin Blackwell has today stressed that while permanent deals are preferential, moves in the loan market could be utilised once again.

Last season, Greg Halford became a key player for the Blades, during a year long loan spell, and manager Blackwell knows that these temporary deals could hold the key to bringing in the right players.

'It's something we've done in the past, and it's something we'll definitely look at again because it's served us well.

'But, as I've made clear all along, anyone who comes here has got to be better than what we've already got and be able to bring something different to the table.

'It would be foolish to close the door on anything.'

The Newcastle United link comes following an announcement that 'discreet negotiations had been ongoing with representatives from the Blades and the North East club.

I would like to see Smith at the Lane, playing just off Wardy

I'd love Smith at lane, quality player that gets stuck in. I know he's a striker but he'd be better in Midfield for us. He played there for Man U & Newcastle a few times and would be by far our most creative midfield player.

He'd obviuosly bang shit loads in if played up front. "BLACKIE, SIGN HIM UP, BLACKIE BLACKIE SIGN HIM UP!"

I could not agree more - I'd even pay him quite a lot of money to do it.

Id definetly love to see him at the lane but I can't see him wanting to play in the championship. I can see Portsmouth going in for him if crouchy leaves.
I really can't understand it from newcastles point of view, loaning some of there best players to a club that is one of the most likley to stand in there way of premiership football next year!

Maybe we're looking at this the wrong way round. Maybe we are loaning TO Newcastle.

£10m over 6 months at say 15% apr?? Or maybe the apr needs to be higher to reflect the high risk? Or do we just identify certain 'items' as security?
