Undecided as i actually like away days at Barnsley. Hard to justify anything over 30 quid for championship football. That said if we're stilll in with a playoff chance I'd not want to be anywhere else come kick off.

Is £36 too much to pay for a football ticket
Yep, some fair points there.

Not really possible to define affordable as that's purely down to the individual. I imagine that if ticket prices for this match were £40 plus, many more wouldn't go out of principle even if they could afford it but because prices start with a 3, most will swallow it and go as an occasional price hike for a local derby..

At the end of the day, I don't believe that boycotting is the right way to go. The team will play the match with or without us supporters but they do need us. Not sure what the PL fans groups did for their "20 is plenty" campaign but it seemed to work, so surely something similar could work in the Champ or EFL in general?

  1. Football League/non-league: While the above action relates specifically to Premier League clubs we also think many Football League/non-league prices are too expensive and Twenty's Plenty has saved fans money at Coventry City, Barnsley, and Doncaster Rovers. Little bit or irony in there for you all......

I think this has finally confirmed to me that I have been morally priced out of going to away matches.

Earlier in the season I didn’t go to Pigs or Leeds away due to the ticket prices and fobbed the prices off as idiotic owners intent on screwing money out of people. Now this has happened with Barnsley it has made me realise it is now the norm for such actions. Maurice Watkins was a local man who cared for Barnsley and not for money, yet they are charging £36 for away fans to visit. No longer is it the eccentric owners gambling on the Premier League who are setting ridiculous prices for away fans. Now it is your average Championship club.

While I can easily afford to pay for a ticket I cannot justify it to myself. Football has been, and always will be, the hobby of mine which comes first. On this occasion though, I would rather attend a car show than be forced to pay £36 to go to Barnsley.

Nice succinct post there Dave, straight to the point and very insightful ;)

Is £36 too much to pay for a football ticket ? Yes it bloody well is !

Agree with that post completely as anyone can see this is the thin edge of the wedge.
If the away end sells out, which it probably will, what's the betting that if we're in the same division next season Barnsley will be charging even more, knowing full well people will pay it.

As someone else mentioned, clubs are aware that that can push the boundaries with football fan loyalty, and as long as people are prepared to pay stupid money to watch 90 minutes of football, the price they pay will keep on increasing.

All this discussion seems to be about fleecing away fans £36 for this match
But remember the away price must be applied to home fans too.

Barnsley v Sheff Utd has been designated as a category A* match
So the cheapest ticket for Barnsley fans is also £36
If any Barnsley fans decide to pay on the day it goes up to £38.
I can afford to go but I become very discerning once the £30 barrier has been broken.
It’s not often I’d pay £30 for a football but I might make an exception for the odd game.

My philosophy is that I have an annual budget that I’m prepared to spend on football.
So if I’m willing to spend £100 on away matches.
Even if clubs charged £50 a match i’d still go but choose the most attractive 2 matches of the season. If away clubs charged £10 a match then I’d probably attend 10 away matches a season.

I’m the same with home matches. If SU charged £50 a match at Bramall Lane I’d still go, but I’d attend about 6 games a season.

£36 in Barnsley will keep a family of four in pot noodles, imported fags and white lightning for a week, keep flies off their eyes and give them just enough to buy a pair of pliers to snap off badgers teeth so their staffie/whippet cross has a chance.

£36 the cheapest for home fans?
In Barnsley??
Have all the pits just reopened?

Seeing people that don't understand the situation.

Yes 36 pounds is a lot of money for the game but Sheffield United didn't want to do a deal in the summer or whenever they got approached. So before you complain about Barnsley and us charging you the money go ask the CEO of Sheffield United why HE and the club wouldn't do a deal.

How this started for Barnsley. The former owner was fed up with every club charging more than us. So when we went down to League one It think it was brought in this structure from A* to D. You agree a deal with us and we will agree a deal with you. A number of clubs have done it.

Before anyone wants to start at our North stand. It's far better than the Lower Tier of that end the away fans sit at. I was sat 3/4 way up behind the goal and because there was 3 6ft plus next to each other the seats are packed so tightly we couldn't sit down.

I bet you wouldn't say this to Chris Morgan's face.

To be fair, I can understand this. A similar situation occurred with Ipswich but we didn't enter an agreement so had to pay £30 and £35. Silly really as it's the fans that cop for it every time. No away fan should be charged more than £25 adults, £20 students/18-24, £15 over 65s and £10 U18s. It's amazing that the PL introduced the £30 maximum ticket price but yet in the Championship, the pigs can get away with charging £42.

I travel away quite a lot. 15/18 times a season inc cups and it's expensive but some clubs don't care. Maybe a 30 quid limit would be nice although it's not something that affects the home tickets in the premier league.

But that wouldn't leave enough money to buy any coal to put in the bath.

Will it cover Chardonay’s lip gloss too?

A quick review of our WhatsApp group reveals a further £180 worth of tickets will be available for purchase by someone else .

Alan and Steve not coming down?

Watching football isn’t a basic human right. Whatever hobby you have is generally expensive, if you want to go then you need to make sacrifices elsewhere. Whether that’s not going to the pub, shopping at Aldi instead of Tesco, it’s all about budgeting and life choices.
but that is where football 'is' different. if you don't like it you can't go anywhere else. it's not like anyone is going to say 'ooh i'll go and watch the pigs this week because due to consumer choice it is six quid cheaper'.. football fans are locked into one brand.

I agree with what you are saying, fans can’t shop around. But if you keep paying it, they will keep charging it. People keep going so the ticket prices haven’t reached a level to stop a vast majority from going.

Nothing is cheap when it comes to entertainment so why should football be any different?
